Short answer: OpenAI really did offer eligible college and university students in the United States and Canada two free months of ChatGPT Plus. The claim window ran from March 31 through May 31, 2025. It was a temporary promotion, not a permanent student discount, and it is no longer available.
Current status (2026): The ChatGPT Plus student promotion expired on May 31, 2025. OpenAI’s current student-related offer is a separate Codex credit program, not free ChatGPT Plus.
What the 2025 promotion offered
The promotion covered two months of ChatGPT Plus at no charge for qualifying students who claimed it during the fixed March 31–May 31, 2025 window. Contemporary coverage described Plus as a $20-per-month plan at that time. The announcement and dates are documented in OpenAI’s community post at OpenAI’s community forum and its contemporaneous LinkedIn announcement.
“Free until the end of May” referred to the promotion’s availability period. It did not mean that a student could first enroll after May 31 and still receive the deal, nor did it establish a permanent student rate.

Who could qualify
The offer targeted currently enrolled college or university students in the United States and Canada. Student status reportedly had to be checked through SheerID, rather than approved solely because an account used a school email address. TechRadar’s contemporaneous guide described the verification process.
- Geography: The promotion was for eligible students in the U.S. and Canada; studying at a U.S. or Canadian institution while residing elsewhere did not necessarily qualify.
- Enrollment: Current college or university enrollment mattered. A university email address alone was not a guaranteed pass.
- Education level: The available reporting described college students, not a blanket offer for K–12 pupils.
- Verification: SheerID could request information or documentation, and approval was not automatic.
The older Plus campaign’s exact definition of eligible programs is not fully reproduced in the surviving public coverage, so students in non-degree programs or near graduation should not assume they qualified.
How redemption worked
The historical flow was straightforward, but the final price and account details needed checking before submission:

- Open the student promotion page while signed in to the ChatGPT account you intended to keep using.
- Sign in or create an account, then complete the student-status check.
- Review the offer shown after verification.
- At checkout, confirm that the promotional price is applied—OpenAI’s promotion guidance says an expected free offer should show the appropriate discount or a $0.00 total before you complete it. See OpenAI’s promotion and referral guidance.
- Save the confirmation and inspect the subscription page for the next billing date and renewal price.
The student-specific terms do not establish conclusively whether every claimant had to enter a card. Promotional campaigns can apply immediately or route through checkout. Entering payment details therefore did not by itself prove the offer was invalid; the decisive check was the final price and renewal information.
What Plus included at the time
In 2025, Plus generally meant higher usage limits and access to premium or experimental capabilities compared with the free plan. Coverage of the student deal specifically mentioned expanded access to tools such as Deep Research and then-current model offerings. Feature names, quotas and model availability change, so those descriptions should not be read as a promise about the current Plus plan. The promotion was for the ChatGPT Plus subscription, not for OpenAI API credits.
Existing Plus subscribers: what was and was not guaranteed
Contemporary user reports indicated that people who already had Plus could try student verification, but the result could depend on the account’s billing cycle and how OpenAI applied the campaign. Verification did not guarantee two additional months, a refund for a paid month or automatic replacement of an existing subscription.

- Check the account’s active plan before starting verification.
- Look for a changed next-billing date after redemption.
- Do not assume student approval cancels a paid subscription.
- Keep screenshots of the promotional price and confirmation page.
- Check the first invoice after the promotional period.
The renewal and cancellation warning
OpenAI’s general promotion rules state that most promotional subscriptions renew at the standard monthly rate after the promotional period unless canceled. The same guidance recommends canceling at least 24 hours before renewal. That rule was important for anyone who claimed the 2025 offer and did not want a paid subscription afterward.
Canceling a web subscription
For a subscription started on the web, use Settings → Subscription → Manage → Cancel. OpenAI warns that canceling a free promotion can end promotional access immediately rather than preserving it through the nominal end date. Read the cancellation warning before confirming.
Canceling through Apple or Google
If the subscription was purchased through the Apple App Store or Google Play, cancellation must be completed in that store’s subscription settings. The ChatGPT mobile app cannot cancel a subscription that was created on the web. Removing a payment method is not a substitute for cancellation.

Common problems and sensible checks
Verification fails or the offer does not appear
- Confirm you are in the same ChatGPT account throughout verification and redemption.
- Make sure the account has not already used a conflicting promotion.
- Check that your country and enrollment status fit the campaign.
- Use the support path if SheerID requests documents or cannot confirm your status.
The checkout page shows the regular price
Stop before submitting payment. OpenAI’s promotion guidance lists expired offers, regional restrictions, previous promotional use, existing subscriptions, payment-method restrictions and account mismatches among possible causes. A regular-price checkout was not something to accept on the assumption that the discount would be applied later.
You have separate web and app-store subscriptions
Review both platforms. Canceling one does not necessarily cancel the other, and duplicate subscriptions can create separate charges.

Once the promotional period ended, a claimant generally faced one of two outcomes: conversion to the normal paid Plus plan if the subscription was left active, or loss of Plus access if it was canceled or otherwise ended. The exact account result depended on the subscription record and cancellation timing.

Is the free student Plus offer available now?
No. The 2025 claim window ended on May 31, 2025, so it should not be presented as a live offer in 2026. OpenAI’s current student program is Codex for Students, a separate benefit that does not make ChatGPT Plus free.

What students can use instead
Students who simply need no-cost ChatGPT access can start at ChatGPT’s free plan. Anyone considering a paid subscription should check the current OpenAI pricing page, because the historical $20 figure describes 2025 coverage and should not be assumed to be today’s price in every market.
Other AI services may have their own student programs, limits and renewal rules, but those terms vary by country and change frequently. Verify any offer on the provider’s official site before entering payment information.
