OpenAI did not publicly announce a conventional purchase of Crossing Minds. On June 27, 2025, Crossing Minds said its team was joining OpenAI, while also saying it would stop accepting new clients. The public record therefore supports a team-focused hire—often called an acqui-hire—rather than a disclosed acquisition with a published price, asset transfer or full employee roster.
What happened on June 27, 2025?
Crossing Minds announced that its team was joining OpenAI after about eight years building artificial-intelligence infrastructure for personalization, recommendation systems and information retrieval. The company described the move as a new chapter in its work on understanding user intent and building AI assistants. Its announcement is available at Crossing Minds.
Crossing Minds also said it would not take additional clients. That means the startup’s standalone commercial operation was winding down, although the public announcements did not specify how existing contracts, support obligations or customer migrations would be handled.
Neither company publicly disclosed a purchase price, transaction terms or confirmation that OpenAI bought Crossing Minds’ legal entity, software, contracts, data or intellectual property. TechCrunch’s June 27, 2025 report also said OpenAI had not immediately responded to a request for comment.

Acquisition, acqui-hire or team hire?
Those labels describe materially different outcomes:
| Term | What it usually means | What is established here |
|---|---|---|
| Acquisition | A buyer purchases a company, commonly including assets, contracts, intellectual property and liabilities. | No purchase price or asset-transfer terms were publicly disclosed. |
| Acqui-hire | A transaction primarily intended to bring a startup’s founders and employees into the buyer. | A reasonable description of the public facts, but not a confirmed legal classification. |
| Team hire | Employees move to another company without a clearly disclosed corporate acquisition. | Closest to the wording of Crossing Minds’ announcement: its team was joining OpenAI. |
The evidence favors describing this as OpenAI hiring the Crossing Minds team. The announcement emphasizes people and technical work, the startup stopped accepting new customers, and no conventional merger or purchase terms were released. Some company databases classify the event as “Acq – Talent,” but that is secondary reporting rather than proof of a legal acquisition; see CB Insights’ company profile.
What did Crossing Minds build?
Crossing Minds was more than a product-recommendation widget for online stores. Its own account describes work across several layers of modern AI systems:
- Personalization and preference modeling: systems intended to understand longer-term interests and user intent.
- Recommendations: product suggestions, upselling and bundling based on customer behavior.
- Information retrieval: finding and ranking relevant items or documents.
- Retrieval-augmented generation: connecting language-model responses to retrieved information.
- Real-time machine learning: updating predictions in live applications rather than relying only on periodic batch jobs.
- Production integration: infrastructure designed to work with complex, “messy” existing systems.
TechCrunch reported that the company positioned its technology as able to learn shopping preferences without relying on identifiable personal information. That is a company claim, not an independent privacy audit or a finding that OpenAI received customer data.

Who founded the startup, and who is joining OpenAI?
The public materials identify Alexandre Robicquet and Emile Contal as the founders signing the announcement. Secondary company information and reporting also associate Sebastian Thrun with the founding group, although the available announcement does not spell out each founder’s precise role.
Crossing Minds said “our team” was joining OpenAI. That statement should not be expanded into a verified list of every employee. TechCrunch reported that it was unclear whether all employees moved. The clearest individual evidence is Robicquet’s LinkedIn description, which TechCrunch reported as identifying OpenAI work in “Research, Post-training and Agents.” Public reporting did not establish the final role of every Crossing Minds employee or the OpenAI division receiving the team.
Rank #3
Why this expertise could matter to OpenAI
OpenAI has not publicly assigned the team to a specific product, so the following are strategic inferences from Crossing Minds’ capabilities rather than announced outcomes.
More useful personalization
Assistants that understand durable preferences could make recommendations more relevant than systems that answer each prompt in isolation. Crossing Minds’ experience with long-term preferences and intent modeling is directly related to that challenge.
Retrieval, ranking and agents
AI agents must retrieve candidate information, rank it, filter it and present a useful result. Experience in information retrieval and retrieval-augmented generation could therefore support search, enterprise workflows and agentic tasks, not only retail recommendations.
Commerce and shopping
TechCrunch reported that ChatGPT had already added shopping-oriented responses with recommendations, images and reviews. Crossing Minds’ e-commerce background could complement that direction, but no source confirms that the team was hired specifically for ChatGPT shopping or that it will build a new recommendation product.
Real-time systems at scale
Crossing Minds’ work integrating machine learning into live, complicated production environments could be valuable as OpenAI deploys features that must respond quickly and reliably. That connection remains an interpretation, not a disclosed assignment.
What does the shutdown mean for customers?
Prospective customers should not assume that Crossing Minds remains open for new business. The company said it would not accept additional clients. The available reporting does not establish:

- whether existing customers received continued support;
- whether contracts were transferred, terminated or allowed to expire;
- whether the Crossing Minds product or API remained available;
- whether any customer data, models or intellectual property moved to OpenAI; or
- whether privacy notices or data-processing agreements changed.
Businesses using the service should obtain written answers about retention, export, deletion, support and contract termination rather than infer them from the team announcement.

TechCrunch, citing Crunchbase, reported that Crossing Minds had raised more than $13.5 million across multiple rounds. The cited backers included Index Ventures, Shopify, Plug and Play and Radical Ventures. The figure is a database-derived estimate, not a company-confirmed total.
That funding history shows institutional support, but it does not reveal a valuation, investor return or whether the event was a cash acquisition. No public source establishes the transaction’s equity terms, retention packages, approval process or proceeds. Calling the move a successful financial exit would therefore go beyond the evidence.
What remains unknown
- Whether OpenAI acquired the Crossing Minds corporate entity.
- Any purchase price or other economic terms.
- Whether software, patents, data, contracts or customer relationships changed hands.
- The complete list of employees who joined OpenAI.
- The OpenAI organization and roles assigned to those employees.
- Any product launch, model improvement or shopping feature resulting from the move.
- Customer transition, support and data-handling arrangements.
Options for businesses seeking recommendation technology
Because Crossing Minds is not accepting new clients, companies evaluating replacements should compare data-ingestion needs, real-time versus batch updates, anonymous-user support, cold-start performance, API and commerce integrations, latency commitments, merchant controls, consent and retention terms, model-training rights, data export and minimum contract size.
| Service | Potential fit | Important limitation to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify Search & Discovery | Shopify merchants needing on-site search, filters and product discovery. | May not fit non-Shopify businesses or teams needing highly customized recommendation infrastructure. |
| Amazon Personalize | Developers building individualized recommendations through managed cloud services. | Requires a developer-managed implementation rather than a turnkey merchant interface. |
| Algolia Recommend | Teams seeking recommendation APIs alongside hosted search. | May not provide the full commerce-personalization suite some buyers expect. |
| Bloomreach Discovery | Larger retailers combining search, merchandising and personalization. | Enterprise-oriented; pricing requires a sales discussion. |
| Dynamic Yield | Enterprise experimentation, personalization and recommendation programs. | Potentially excessive for small merchants; enterprise pricing is not publicly established here. |
| Constructor | Retailers seeking AI search, recommendations and product discovery. | Enterprise sales process and pricing should be confirmed directly. |
Bottom line for readers tracking OpenAI
The important development is not a disclosed corporate purchase. It is OpenAI adding a team experienced in personalization, retrieval, recommendation systems and real-time machine learning while Crossing Minds winds down its client acquisition. That could strengthen OpenAI’s future work on assistants, agents and commerce, but no public evidence yet ties the move to a particular product, model improvement, customer-data transfer or financial outcome.
