In April 2024, The Information reported that OpenAI had fired researchers Leopold Aschenbrenner and Pavel Izmailov for allegedly leaking company information. The report, based on an unnamed source, did not identify the material involved. Two months later, Aschenbrenner said his dismissal concerned a redacted brainstorming document about preparedness, safety and security that he had shared with three outside researchers for feedback. That account remains his characterization, not a publicly established finding from OpenAI.
What was reported in April 2024?
The Information reported on April 11, 2024, that OpenAI had fired Aschenbrenner and Izmailov over alleged leaks. The report said the source was familiar with the situation but did not disclose the alleged information or provide a detailed account of either dismissal. OpenAI and Microsoft were contacted, but the coverage did not include a substantive public explanation resolving the allegations. Read the original report.
That distinction matters. The defensible description is that OpenAI reportedly dismissed two researchers over alleged leaks, not that the company publicly proved they leaked a particular model, source code or breakthrough.
Who were the researchers?
Leopold Aschenbrenner
Aschenbrenner worked on OpenAI’s superalignment effort, which sought methods for controlling or steering highly capable future AI systems. He was described as an ally of then-chief scientist Ilya Sutskever and had joined OpenAI roughly a year before the report. His background included work associated with effective altruism and the former FTX Future Fund. He later became widely known for his 2024 essay “Situational Awareness”.

Pavel Izmailov
Izmailov was described as a researcher working on reasoning who had also spent time on safety-related work. The original reporting did not specify what he allegedly disclosed, and he did not respond to The Information’s request for comment at the time. Later reports said he joined Anthropic, but that employment move does not establish why OpenAI dismissed him.
What did Aschenbrenner say he shared?
In a June 2024 interview, Aschenbrenner said OpenAI told employees that he had been fired for sharing a brainstorming document with three external researchers. He described the document as covering preparedness, safety and security on the path to artificial general intelligence. He said he removed a reference to a future internal computing cluster, reviewed the document before sending it, and left a link to internal slides inactive for the recipients. He also said sharing safety ideas externally for feedback had previously been normal at OpenAI. His account is available in the full interview.
Those details make the episode more complicated than a headline about a secret model leak. Aschenbrenner’s version suggests a dispute over authorization, handling rules or process may have been central even if he believed the redacted document was safe. The public record does not include OpenAI’s complete investigation, the relevant internal policy or a detailed company rebuttal.

Was Q* the leaked information?
Probably not something the public can state as fact. During the November 2023 leadership crisis, media reports discussed an internal project called Q* and associated it with possible advances in AI reasoning. Later commentary connected Q* to the 2024 dismissals, but the original report did not establish that Q* was the material involved. Coverage from Cybernews and The Information provides context, not confirmation.

There is no established evidence in the available accounts that either researcher leaked Q*, GPT-4.5, model weights, customer data, source code or a complete AGI roadmap.
How did the Sam Altman crisis shape interpretation?
In November 2023, Sutskever participated in the board action that removed Sam Altman as chief executive. Altman later returned, and a nonprofit-board investigation reportedly found no conduct warranting his removal. Because Aschenbrenner was associated with Sutskever, observers interpreted his later dismissal through that internal political conflict. A timeline of the wider dispute is provided by TIME.

The association is relevant context, but it does not prove that the firing was retaliation for supporting Sutskever, opposing Altman or taking a particular governance position.
Leak, policy violation or whistleblowing?
The episode supports competing interpretations:
- Confidentiality perspective: OpenAI may have considered external distribution of an internal document unauthorized, regardless of whether the author removed its most obviously sensitive reference.
- Safety-disclosure perspective: Aschenbrenner portrayed the document as safety and preparedness work shared for research feedback. He also said he had warned about security risks, including the possibility of foreign adversaries obtaining advanced AI secrets.
- Legal status: The available sources do not establish a protected whistleblower disclosure, a legal retaliation finding or a court judgment.
Calling Aschenbrenner a “whistleblower” therefore requires attribution. It is an interpretation of his conduct, not a settled legal description. Likewise, saying OpenAI “punished safety researchers for discussing safety” goes beyond what the public evidence proves.
What is known and what remains unresolved?
| Question | What the public record supports |
|---|---|
| Were two researchers dismissed? | The Information reported this on April 11, 2024, citing an unnamed source. |
| Who were they? | Leopold Aschenbrenner and Pavel Izmailov. |
| What was initially alleged? | Leaking company information; the specific material was not identified. |
| What did Aschenbrenner later describe? | A redacted preparedness, safety and security brainstorming document shared with three outside researchers. |
| What did Izmailov allegedly disclose? | Not established in the reviewed public accounts. |
| Was Q* confirmed as the subject? | No. The connection remains speculation. |
| Did OpenAI publish a complete explanation? | No detailed public account resolving both dismissals appears in the cited coverage. |
OpenAI’s reported search for an “insider risk investigator,” involving anomalous-activity analysis and security culture, indicates concern about internal information security. The listing, reported by Futurism, does not show that these two researchers caused every earlier leak or that the company’s controls failed.

Why the episode matters beyond two dismissals
Frontier-lab secrecy
Companies developing advanced models must protect security-sensitive systems, research and infrastructure. Strict controls can also make it harder for researchers to obtain outside criticism of safety methods.
External peer review
Aschenbrenner’s account raises a practical governance question: when does sharing a safety idea for peer feedback become an unauthorized disclosure? Clear data classifications, approval paths and documented exceptions are essential if employees are expected to balance openness with security.
Employee reporting channels
Researchers need ways to raise concerns about safety, governance and security without guessing whether a disclosure will be treated as ordinary collaboration or misconduct. The available sources do not show whether OpenAI’s internal channels resolved that tension in this case.

Separating safety events
Aschenbrenner and Izmailov had safety-related experience, but the dismissals should not be used to claim that OpenAI abandoned safety research. Later departures by other safety personnel were separate events and require separate evidence.
Bottom line
OpenAI’s 2024 dismissal of Aschenbrenner and Izmailov is a reported event, but the simple phrase “fired for leaking information” conceals an unresolved dispute. The initial report did not identify the alleged leak. Aschenbrenner later said the issue was a redacted safety and preparedness document shared for feedback; no equally detailed public account explains Izmailov’s case. Q* and the Altman boardroom crisis help explain why the story attracted attention, but neither proves motive or the material involved. The record supports a conflict over secrecy and safety—not a confirmed disclosure of AGI or a proven whistleblower-retaliation case.
