Online Slots vs. Social Casino Games: What’s the Difference?

Online slots typically offer a chance at real-money winnings; conventional social casino games use non-redeemable virtual credits. Purchases and labels do not settle whether rewards can be cashed out or an offering is lawful.

Online slots generally involve staking money or money’s worth for a chance to win a real-world payout. Conventional social casino games imitate slots and other casino games but use virtual credits that usually cannot be cashed out. A social game may still sell credits or features, and a “social” or “sweepstakes” label does not determine whether its prizes are redeemable or whether it is lawful where you live.

How online slots and social casino games differ

The key distinction is not how the game looks; it is what players stake and whether rewards can leave the game. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) describes social casino games as simulated versions of casino games such as slots, blackjack, and roulette, offered through apps, websites, or social platforms. In the conventional closed-loop model, players cannot withdraw winnings or trade credits with other players.

Question Online slots Conventional social casino games
What do you play? Slot-style games offered through an online gambling service. Simulated slots and other casino games, often in an app, website, or social platform.
What do you stake? Money or, depending on applicable rules, something treated as money’s worth. Often free virtual credits. The game may also sell additional credits or features.
Can rewards be withdrawn? Real-money services offer possible winnings, subject to their terms, account checks, and applicable law. In the ACCC-described closed-loop model, credits cannot be redeemed for money or traded among players.
What should you check? Whether the service is licensed where you are and what local law allows. Whether currency or prizes can be redeemed or traded, the terms of the game, and local law.

These descriptions distinguish common models, not every product carrying those labels. Read the actual game and redemption terms.

Can you buy chips in a social casino game?

Often, yes. Social casino games may be free to download and may provide free chips or credits, while offering additional credits or features for purchase. Buying virtual chips is not by itself proof that you can cash out. In the closed-loop model described by the ACCC, purchased credits stay within the game and cannot be redeemed for cash or traded between players. Check what a purchase buys and whether the terms permit any redemption.

Can you cash out social casino winnings?

Not in the conventional closed-loop model: its credits and winnings are not withdrawable. But a product’s “social,” “free-to-play,” or “sweepstakes” label is not enough to establish how its rewards work. Check whether it offers cash or material prizes, whether virtual currency can be exchanged or traded, and what the current terms say.

The UK Gambling Commission’s guidance says that items convertible into cash or tradeable for items of value attain real-world value. Where gambling is offered using those items, the Commission says a licence is required in the same way as when casino chips can later be exchanged for cash. This is UK guidance, not a universal legal test.

Are social casino games gambling?

The answer depends on the game’s mechanics and the law where it is offered. A simulated game with non-redeemable credits differs from one where players stake value for cash or prizes. Whether currency or rewards can be converted, traded, or otherwise redeemed can affect how regulators assess an offering, as can its licensing and local rules. The game’s label alone does not settle the question.

For example, Louisiana’s attorney general warned in 2025 that some sites called “sweepstakes” or “social casino” may offer payouts or material prizes, and that the label does not itself make an offering legal under Louisiana law. That notice concerns Louisiana; it should not be read as a nationwide rule.

How to check a game before spending or playing

  1. Identify what is at stake. Is it money, a purchased balance, free credits, or another item of value?
  2. Read the reward and redemption terms. Look for whether winnings can be withdrawn, exchanged for prizes, or traded with other players.
  3. Check what purchases do. Determine whether payments buy credits, gameplay, or features, and whether those credits can be redeemed.
  4. Verify the operator’s status where you live. Consult the relevant regulator’s current licensing information and local rules rather than relying on the game’s marketing label.

These checks are not a legal determination for a particular service. Terms and laws can change, and the cited guidance comes from specific jurisdictions.

Why advertising claims deserve a close look

The UK Advertising Standards Authority considered ads for social casino apps that imitated slots but did not offer withdrawable real-world money or prizes. It upheld a ruling that imagery and claims such as “huge payouts,” “win massive prizes,” and becoming a “billionaire overnight” could mislead consumers into thinking they could win cash or tangible prizes. The ruling directed the advertiser to ensure its ads did not imply that such rewards were available. Those phrases are examples from that case, not endorsements or a general finding about every social casino ad.

In Australia, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) warns that people using illegal online gambling services risk losing money; operators may withhold winnings, close or move services, or continue withdrawing funds without permission. Check the operator’s legal status with the regulator relevant to your location.
