New Zealand’s fuel supplies were scheduled to remain secure through the end of 2026, Z Energy chief executive Lindis Jones said, but he warned that stressed global inventories and supply chains left less margin for a new disruption. That distinction matters to drivers and households: the warning is about vulnerability to a future shock, not evidence that New Zealand was already running short.
What Z Energy said about New Zealand’s fuel supply
Jones said shipments were arriving as scheduled and that supplies through the end of 2026 were secure. He also said New Zealand and the Asia-Pacific region had more stock than in March, while global inventories were lower and the supply chain was stressed. “So the next piece of news could have a disproportionate impact, whatever that next piece of news is,” he said.
These are Jones’s assessment and assurance, as reported by RNZ/1News—not a government forecast. His warning describes how a fresh international disruption could have an outsized effect when the system has less slack; it does not mean that scheduled shipments had stopped.
How much fuel was reported in stock or in transit?
RNZ/1News reported that Z Energy’s end-of-September briefing put New Zealand’s fuel cover at nearly 54 days of petrol, 48 days of diesel and 46 days of aviation fuel, counting fuel in stock or in transit. The figures are attributed to Jones’s briefing and refer to the end of September 2026. RNZ/1News report

MBIE’s separate official snapshot, taken at 11:59pm on 20 September 2026, reported 60.6 days of petrol, 50.7 days of diesel and 53.3 days of jet fuel in combined domestic stocks and fuel on water. MBIE calculated those days using pre-conflict demand levels for the minimum stockholding obligation; the totals exclude the Government’s diesel reserve. MBIE fuel stocks snapshot
The two sets of figures should not be treated as a direct like-for-like comparison: they have different snapshot dates and stated calculation bases, and the reported fuel labels differ for aviation fuel and jet fuel. Days of cover also depend on the demand baseline used to translate available fuel into days. A higher or lower figure on one snapshot alone does not establish that supply improved or deteriorated.

How stock levels differ from legal minimums
MBIE’s minimum stockholding obligation is a regulatory floor for fuel importers that meet the relevant criteria, not a measure of how much fuel New Zealand actually has. The current minimums are 28 days of petrol, 21 days of diesel and 24 days of jet fuel. The obligation covers fuel held within New Zealand’s exclusive economic zone. MBIE minimum stockholding obligation
From 1 July 2028, importers with more than 10% market share must hold 28 days of diesel cover. That future requirement should not be confused with current national inventories or with the stock figures in either September snapshot.

Why prices could still face upward pressure
Jones said higher prices had reduced demand over the three months to September 2026 by about 6% for petrol and around 3–4% for diesel. He expected demand in the more recent period to be softer. Lower demand can ease pressure on available fuel, but it does not remove exposure to shipping or international supply disruptions.
Jones assessed that price pressure was more likely upward than downward. He pointed in part to the possibility that product could be drawn toward Europe if stocks there continued to decline, and to the price differential between Europe and this region. This is his market assessment, not a guarantee that New Zealand prices will rise or an official government price forecast. For households, the practical implication is that secure scheduled supply and uncertain pump prices can coexist.

What the warning means for households
The information supports a measured conclusion: Z Energy said scheduled supplies were secure through year-end, while warning that a stressed global system had less room to absorb a new shock. The reported stock figures describe snapshots, not a promise that prices will remain stable or that every disruption would be harmless. The report does not provide a reason for households to stockpile fuel.
