NVIDIA Plans Up to $100B Investment as OpenAI Targets 10GW of NVIDIA Systems

NVIDIA and OpenAI announced a letter of intent on September 22, 2025: OpenAI plans to deploy at least 10 gigawatts of NVIDIA systems, while NVIDIA intends to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI in stages as each gigawatt is deployed. The first gigawatt is targeted for the second half of 2026. The announcement is not a final contract, and it does not settle the financing or delivery details for later phases.

What did NVIDIA and OpenAI announce?

The companies described a planned infrastructure partnership for OpenAI’s next-generation AI systems. NVIDIA’s September 22, 2025 announcement characterizes it as a letter of intent. OpenAI would deploy at least 10GW of NVIDIA systems, representing millions of GPUs, to train and run future models and support inference—the computing used to generate answers and other outputs for users.

NVIDIA said it intends to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI progressively, tied to the deployment of each gigawatt. “Up to” is a ceiling, not a statement that the full amount has already been invested or that OpenAI has received it. The announcement does not provide a complete payment schedule or final investment terms.

What does the $100 billion investment buy?

The public announcement establishes an intended investment in OpenAI associated with the infrastructure rollout. It does not say that NVIDIA’s money is a direct payment for a specific number of GPUs, disclose a per-gigawatt investment amount, or spell out what ownership stake or other rights NVIDIA would receive. The exact relationship between the investment and OpenAI’s hardware purchases remains unspecified.

That distinction matters because the $100 billion headline is not the same as the total cost of building the planned capacity. NVIDIA’s 2025 investor presentation estimates approximately $50–60 billion in total spend for each 1GW build-out. That is a project-spending estimate, not the amount NVIDIA said it would invest in OpenAI for each gigawatt.

Figure What it describes Qualification
Up to $100 billion NVIDIA’s intended investment in OpenAI Announced September 22, 2025; staged as gigawatts are deployed; final terms not specified in the announcement.
Approximately $50–60 billion per 1GW Estimated total spend for a 1GW build-out NVIDIA’s 2025 investor presentation; broader project spend, not NVIDIA’s equity contribution.
At least 10GW Planned NVIDIA-system capacity for OpenAI Letter of intent; later delivery details and final contracts were not specified.

The per-gigawatt estimate is useful context, but it should not be treated as a finalized budget for all 10GW. Sites, project financing, ownership of facilities and the detailed division of costs were not specified in the announcement.

What does 10GW of AI infrastructure mean?

A gigawatt is a measure of power capacity, not a count of GPUs or a direct measure of AI performance. The companies described the 10GW plan as involving millions of GPUs, but the announcement did not give a GPU count, a hardware configuration for every phase or a schedule for all deployments.

For this project, 10GW signals the intended scale of the power and computing infrastructure OpenAI plans to bring online using NVIDIA systems. The capacity is intended to support both model training and inference. Actual useful computing capacity would depend on the equipment, facility design, power availability and deployment schedule; those particulars were not set out publicly in the announcement.

When is the first NVIDIA gigawatt expected?

The first 1GW is targeted for the second half of 2026 on NVIDIA’s Vera Rubin platform, according to the companies’ announcement. That is a target, not confirmation that the capacity is already operating. The announcement does not specify a precise delivery date or provide a dated rollout schedule for the remaining gigawatts.

Is the NVIDIA–OpenAI deal final?

No. The public announcement is a letter of intent. It signals the companies’ plans, but it is not the same as a completed set of final contracts for the full deployment and investment. NVIDIA and OpenAI said the arrangement is subject to final agreements; the announcement does not establish that all 10GW will be delivered or that NVIDIA will invest the maximum amount.

The companies also used forward-looking language about future infrastructure and deployment. Until final agreements and subsequent execution are established, the capacity, timing and investment beyond the first targeted phase should be treated as planned rather than completed.

Does this create circular financing?

It creates a potential financing question: NVIDIA intends to invest in OpenAI, while OpenAI’s plan involves deploying NVIDIA systems. That means the same partnership includes capital flowing from NVIDIA to OpenAI and planned infrastructure spending by OpenAI involving NVIDIA hardware.

But the announcement does not disclose enough detail to conclude that NVIDIA’s investment will directly fund purchases from NVIDIA, how much of the total project spend would go to NVIDIA, or how funds would move among OpenAI, facility owners, lenders and suppliers. Calling the arrangement definitively circular financing would go beyond the disclosed facts. What is established is a staged investment intention tied to capacity deployment alongside a large planned NVIDIA-system rollout.
