Nutanix announced two startup acquisitions on August 29, 2016: it had signed a definitive agreement to acquire PernixData, subject to customary closing conditions, and had already closed its acquisition of Calm.io. PernixData focused on data acceleration and analytics; Calm.io specialized in DevOps automation. Nutanix said the additions would expand its enterprise cloud platform, but described the product benefits as plans rather than results already delivered.
What did PernixData do?
Nutanix described PernixData as a pioneer in scale-out data acceleration and analytics. Its announced role was to help shape an advanced data stack that would keep data and applications close together for performance and flexible scaling.
Nutanix also said it planned to enhance its Application Mobility Fabric, which was intended to help move workloads across virtual and cloud environments. The announcement outlined intended development; it does not establish that these enhancements shipped or produced the proposed outcomes. PernixData CEO and co-founder Poojan Kumar said the company’s software had helped “hundreds of customers virtualize their applications without compromising performance and visibility.” That was Kumar’s company-supplied claim, not an independently verified customer count.
What did Calm.io do?
Nutanix characterized Calm.io as an innovator in DevOps automation. It planned to add cloud automation and management capabilities covering application and service orchestration, runtime lifecycle management, policy-based governance, reporting, and auditing. The intended scope included virtual machines, containers, and microservices.
#1 Best Overall
Calm.io founder and CEO Aaditya Sood said, “We have shared a similar vision as Nutanix since day one – datacenter infrastructure must be fully automated, simple to deploy and easy-to-use.” This statement expressed the companies’ shared outlook; it was not an independent assessment of product performance.
How the two acquisitions differed
| Company | Primary capability | Announced platform contribution | Status on August 29, 2016 |
|---|---|---|---|
| PernixData | Data acceleration and analytics | Planned data-stack development and Application Mobility Fabric enhancements | Definitive agreement signed; closing subject to customary conditions |
| Calm.io | DevOps automation | Planned orchestration, lifecycle management, governance, reporting, and auditing | Acquisition already closed |
The announcement gave no purchase prices and no comparative performance data, so it does not support ranking which acquisition was more valuable or impactful. Nutanix’s account of the companies’ strategic roles and expected benefits is available in its August 29, 2016 announcement.

Why Nutanix wanted both companies
Nutanix presented the deals as a way to add technology, products, and engineering talent to its enterprise cloud platform. Its rationale paired PernixData’s data-focused work and workload mobility with Calm.io’s automation and application-centered orchestration. Nutanix said the combination was intended to bring cloud-like agility and automation together with the control and security of on-premises infrastructure. Those were the acquirer’s strategic aims, not independently measured outcomes.

Nutanix’s September 22, 2026 announcement about acquiring Ryax Technologies concerns a separate, much later transaction—not one of the two startups announced in 2016. Nutanix said it planned to integrate Ryax’s GPU utilization and smart scheduling capabilities into Nutanix Kubernetes Platform and Nutanix Enterprise AI. See the Ryax announcement for that deal.
