For technology and delivery partners, the transaction created a larger services platform with deeper industry expertise, broader infrastructure and application capabilities, and greater North American scale. It did not, by itself, establish that any partner’s contract, certification, channel status, revenue or fees changed.
What happened, and when?
NTT DATA and Dell announced a definitive agreement on March 28, 2016. The assets being acquired included infrastructure, cloud, application and business-process outsourcing services, together with industry capabilities.
NTT DATA announced the closing on November 2, 2016. Its SEC-filed notice said more than 98% of Dell Services, measured by asset value, had transferred at that point; the remaining transfer was expected during the fiscal year ending March 31, 2017.
The filing identified the acquired operations as Dell Systems Corporation, Dell Technology & Solutions Limited, Dell Services Pte. Ltd. and Dell Group information-technology-services assets, mainly in North America. It reported a purchase price of US$3.039 billion for shares and business segments and estimated US$36 million in advisory and other costs. Those are transaction figures reported at the time, not a current valuation.

The operation was initially referred to as NTT DATA Services. NTT DATA’s fiscal 2017 annual report says the business was integrated with NTT DATA, Inc. effective April 1, 2017. In May 2017, NTT DATA explained that NTT DATA remained the primary brand and that “NTT DATA Services” was a business identifier rather than a replacement for legal entity names.
What NTT DATA said the acquisition would add
The companies presented the deal as a way to combine complementary portfolios and expand NTT DATA’s enterprise reach. At closing, NTT DATA, Inc. CEO John McCain described the portfolios as “extremely complementary” and said client overlap was less than 10 percent. That was an executive characterization, not an independent overlap study.
- Industry solutions: consulting and vertical offerings in healthcare and life sciences, financial services and insurance, public sector, manufacturing and commercial industries.
- More end-to-end delivery: business-process outsourcing (BPO), business-process-as-a-service, applications, infrastructure and lifecycle management.
- Digital capabilities: continued investment in cloud, automation, analytics and other digital services.
- Geographic reach: expanded delivery capacity in North America, Europe, India, Asia and the Middle East.
- Data-center scale: the closing announcement described more than 240 data centers globally with the NTT Group. The March announcement had described Dell Services facilities in the United States, United Kingdom and Australia joining NTT’s then-230 data centers. These are dated company statements, not a current facility count.
At the closing, NTT DATA president and CEO Toshio Iwamoto said the transaction was a milestone in helping clients navigate digital disruption. Dell chairman and CEO Michael Dell said the combination would be a winning one for Dell Services customers, employees and partners. Those statements describe the intended rationale and expectations; they do not prove that every promised benefit materialized.
What NTT DATA later reported about the integration
NTT DATA’s fiscal 2017 annual report provides management-reported measures after the combination. They show a materially larger services mix and customer base, but they are not partner-performance statistics.

| Measure | Reported result | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Former Dell Services revenue | Approximately ¥300.0 billion, including around ¥150.0 billion from healthcare | Historical revenue attributed to the acquired business |
| North American healthcare share of net sales | Rose from roughly 13% to 33% | Company-reported service mix after integration |
| ITO share | Rose from 10% to 40% | Company-reported mix; ITO means information-technology outsourcing |
| BPO share | Rose from 1% to 8% | Company-reported mix, not partner BPO revenue |
| Order backlog at fiscal 2016 year-end | Approximately ¥2.4 trillion, more than ¥800 billion above the prior year-end | NTT DATA’s total backlog measure |
| Large U.S. accounts | Annual net sales of at least US$50 million increased from five to 16 | Count of large accounts, not a count of partners |
Management also said it analyzed risks such as employee and client loss and country-by-country approval requirements. That makes continuity a reasonable issue for customers and suppliers to monitor during integration, but it does not establish that a particular partner was disrupted.
What the deal might mean for technology and delivery partners
A broader solution envelope
A partner that complements cloud, infrastructure, applications, automation, analytics, cybersecurity or BPO could potentially fit into larger, multi-service proposals. The logic is straightforward: NTT DATA said it was combining these capabilities and pursuing full-lifecycle engagements. The announcements do not identify a specific partner award, referral arrangement or incremental revenue opportunity.
More vertical-market adjacency
Healthcare and life sciences, financial services and insurance, public sector, manufacturing and commercial markets were explicit areas of emphasis. Partners with proven domain expertise, regulated-industry controls and relevant reference architectures may therefore be more relevant to NTT DATA-led pursuits than providers offering only general horizontal services. The reported rise in North American healthcare’s sales share indicates strategic weight for that sector, not guaranteed access for healthcare partners.
Greater North American and global delivery requirements
The combined organization was presented as having stronger North American reach and a wider global delivery network. A prospective partner should assess whether it can support the required countries, data-residency rules, languages, time zones, security controls and delivery model. No announcement quantified which partners became eligible for that network or how commercial access would be allocated.

More potential competition as well as opportunity
A larger prime contractor can bring more capabilities in-house. That may create opportunities for specialists, but it can also increase competition among vendors seeking a place in the same solution. The acquisition announcements do not disclose changes to partner margins, preferred-vendor lists or procurement rules, so those effects must be treated as possibilities rather than outcomes.
What is not established about partner outcomes
The available company filings and releases do not provide independently verified figures for partner retention, partner revenue, channel disruption, certifications, contract transfers, satisfaction or economics. NTT DATA’s revenue, backlog, account-count and service-mix numbers should not be relabeled as partner results.
- No evidence establishes that a Dell Services partner contract automatically moved to NTT DATA.
- No evidence establishes that a Dell Technologies certification or channel tier was created, preserved or withdrawn because of the transaction.
- No public figure in the cited materials shows how many third-party partners were affected.
- No referral fee, commission, partner discount or program-signup terms are identified.
Partner-level conclusions require the relevant agreement, procurement notice or program documentation. The transaction alone is not proof of any of those changes.

If you are comparing whether to work with NTT DATA after the Dell Services acquisition, use evidence that can be tested in a specific pursuit:
Rank #4
- Renewed server with the highest quality standards
- Ideal for a robust enterprise environment or data center
- All servers include power cords, and other parts detailed in full product description below
- Custom configurations available upon request
- Check vertical fit. Match your references, compliance experience and product capabilities to the target industry and buyer.
- Map portfolio complementarity. Identify the exact part of an application, infrastructure, cloud, data, automation, security or BPO solution you provide and what NTT DATA would supply.
- Verify delivery coverage. Confirm countries, staffing, support hours, language capability, data location and subcontracting requirements.
- Confirm commercial mechanics. Obtain current written terms for qualification, contracting, pricing, payment, intellectual-property ownership, support and termination.
- Test integration requirements. Ask how your technology will connect with the customer’s existing environment and which security, architecture and service-management standards apply.
- Measure the opportunity independently. Treat any forecast pipeline or account access as a proposal assumption until a signed statement of work or purchase order exists.
What the current Dell relationship does—and does not—show
NTT DATA’s current ecosystem page lists Dell Technologies among its partners and describes collaboration across networking, hybrid infrastructure, enterprise applications, artificial intelligence, security, collaboration and customer experience. That supports saying a present-day relationship exists at the ecosystem level.
It does not show that every former Dell Services partner transferred, that a 2016 channel program was created, or that an affiliate arrangement is available. The page is subject to change, so current program details should be confirmed directly with NTT DATA or Dell Technologies before relying on them.
Bottom line
The completed acquisition gave NTT DATA a larger, more vertically oriented enterprise-services platform and a stronger North American base. For partners, that creates plausible routes into broader, industry-specific solutions—but only as a potential fit. The published evidence does not prove any partner-level contract, channel, certification or financial outcome. Evaluate an opportunity using vertical expertise, portfolio fit, delivery reach and written commercial terms rather than assuming the acquisition transferred benefits automatically.
