Founded by former Chicago English teacher Jeff Scheur, the company built a school-focused writing curriculum designed to give students repeated, personalized practice rather than simply mark errors. The financing was intended to help NoRedInk expand its product and reach more schools; it was not evidence by itself that the platform improved writing outcomes.
What NoRedInk raised in 2021
The financing was a $50 million Series B announced on August 24, 2021. TechCrunch reported that Susquehanna Growth Equity led the round and True Ventures participated. The same coverage named GSV, Rethink Education and Kapor Capital as earlier NoRedInk investors; it does not establish that all three invested in this particular Series B.
The round came nearly six years after NoRedInk’s Series A. Contemporary coverage described a growth objective—expanding the platform, improving the curriculum and reaching more schools—but did not disclose how the $50 million was divided among hiring, sales, research, product development or international expansion.
Scheur founded NoRedInk in 2012 after working as a Chicago English teacher. The name refers to the red ink traditionally used to mark student papers. His stated concern was that students often received corrections or grades without learning how to apply the feedback on their next piece of writing.

The instructional problem is larger than grammar
Writing software faces a harder problem than spell-checking. Grammar and conventions can often be practiced as discrete skills, but effective writing also involves audience, purpose, organization, evidence, clarity, voice and revision. A student may know that an essay is weak without knowing how to restructure an argument or make a claim better supported.
Teachers face the opposite constraint: individualized writing conferences and targeted practice are valuable but time-consuming. A useful platform therefore has to provide enough structure for frequent practice without reducing every response to one mechanically correct style. Automated feedback can support instruction, but teacher judgment remains important for originality, rhetorical choices, disciplinary writing and the quality of a complete argument.
How NoRedInk’s platform works
The 2021 product description presented NoRedInk as an adaptive curriculum rather than a consumer proofreading add-on. Its workflow combines targeted exercises with increasingly open-ended writing.
Adaptive, interest-based practice
Students receive exercises that adjust to their performance and can use topics connected to their interests. The reporting described “Mad Libs-style” prompts, which let students practice a specific skill in a more engaging context than an isolated worksheet.

Scaffolding and guided composition
The platform provides light support through the writing process, including modeling, practice, guided drafting and revision. That sequence is intended to connect sentence-level work with paragraphs and longer compositions rather than treating grammar drills as the entire curriculum.
Teacher and administrator visibility
Teachers can assign targeted work and review progress, while administrators can use broader reports to identify patterns across classrooms or schools. The practical value depends on whether those reports lead to a concrete instructional decision—such as reteaching a skill or grouping students for support.
How much usage did NoRedInk report?
In August 2021, NoRedInk said students had completed more than 10 billion exercises on the platform, according to TechCrunch. That is a usage measure, not an independent learning evaluation: completed activity does not by itself show that students transferred the skill to authentic writing or improved their long-term outcomes.
Separate contemporary coverage from EdTechReview cited a company-reported presence in 88% of the 1,000 largest U.S. school districts and said thousands of schools requested paid-version upgrades each month. “Presence” is not the same as audited market share, paid adoption, active usage or a districtwide deployment, so those figures should be read as company-reported reach.

NoRedInk is not simply Grammarly for classrooms
The distinction raised in the original funding coverage is instructional purpose. Grammarly is generally positioned as a writing assistant that suggests corrections and other improvements while a person writes. NoRedInk is designed for schools and districts to teach sequenced skills through assignments, practice, scaffolding and reporting.
| Question | NoRedInk’s instructional model | General-purpose writing assistant |
|---|---|---|
| Primary job | Teach and practice writing skills | Suggest edits or improvements during writing |
| Typical setting | Classrooms, schools and districts | Consumer, workplace or institutional writing |
| Teacher workflow | Assignments, progress views and standards-oriented reporting | Usually less focused on a sequenced K–12 curriculum |
| What still requires a teacher | Judging argument, voice, originality and transfer to authentic work | Judging whether an automated suggestion fits the writer’s purpose |
The products can overlap, but they are not interchangeable. A school buying a curriculum needs scope and sequence, assignments, rostering and intervention data; a user wanting quick proofreading may need none of those.
Where NoRedInk stood by August 2026

Free access and Premium purchasing
NoRedInk’s pricing help page says teachers, students, parents, tutors and administrators can sign up for free. Free access does not unlock every Premium curriculum and reporting feature.
Premium is currently sold to schools and districts, not as an individual or class-level subscription. Buyers generally request pricing or licenses. One current product page says school rollouts can start at $2,250 per year; that is a starting signal rather than a universal price, because scope, enrollment and implementation requirements can change the quote.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who pays and what a school is buying
The user is usually a student or teacher, but the economic buyer is a school or district. English-language-arts leaders, curriculum directors, technology administrators and classroom teachers may influence the decision. The purchase is therefore about more than access to exercises.
- Instruction: a curriculum spanning conventions, composition and revision.
- Implementation: rostering, identity management, learning-management-system integration and teacher training.
- Measurement: standards-aligned reports and views that can support intervention.
- Support: professional development and customer-success assistance described in Premium materials.
An individual teacher or homeschool parent can use the free version, but cannot currently buy an individual Premium license. A district should confirm device, browser, accessibility, data-governance and procurement requirements before treating a quoted price as its total cost.

Questions a serious buyer should ask
Does practice transfer to real writing?
Ask for evidence that students apply practiced skills in essays, research writing and other authentic assignments. Exercise volume is not a substitute for a controlled comparison, a matched cohort or another clearly described evaluation design.
How much teacher work is removed?
Request a realistic setup demonstration: creating an assignment, targeting a skill, reviewing a report and deciding what to reteach. A platform can automate practice while still creating substantial planning or grading work.
Is personalization instructional or merely entertaining?
Interest-based prompts may improve engagement, but the school still needs a consistent scope and sequence, common standards and valid assessments.
Can the system fit the district’s technology and equity requirements?
Verify the exact LMS, rostering and identity integrations; browser and device support; accessibility features; multilingual-learner support; data retention; security review; and export options. Marketing lists are not a substitute for a procurement confirmation.
What does automated feedback not judge well?
Ask how the product handles voice, originality, nuanced evidence, disciplinary conventions and arguments that do not fit a single expected pattern. Teacher review remains necessary for those dimensions.
Bottom line on the Series B
NoRedInk’s 2021 raise signaled investor confidence in a school-based approach to writing instruction: adaptive practice, guided composition and teacher reporting rather than a standalone grammar checker. By 2026, the company’s public proposition remained institution-first, with a broader Grades 3–12 curriculum and district-oriented reporting. The open question is not whether software can generate more corrections; it is whether structured, personalized practice helps students carry those skills into thoughtful, original writing.
