Nokia sells network technology and infrastructure; Verizon operates communications services for consumers, businesses, and government. Their latest reported results show different opportunities and risks, but do not provide a complete same-date valuation comparison. Nokia may suit investors seeking exposure to network infrastructure and AI/cloud investment, while Verizon may suit those evaluating a large communications operator’s customer base and service revenue. The better choice depends on valuation, financial resilience, risk tolerance, income needs, and investment horizon.
How Nokia and Verizon differ
| Company | What it does | What may drive results |
|---|---|---|
| Nokia Corporation | Sells network infrastructure and mobile infrastructure to telecom providers, AI and cloud providers, and mission-critical enterprise and defense customers. Since 1 January 2026, its two primary segments are Network Infrastructure and Mobile Infrastructure. | Demand for network equipment and technology, including investment tied to AI and cloud growth, next-generation connectivity, and 6G. |
| Verizon Communications Inc. | Provides wireless and wireline communications services to consumer, business, and government customers. Its offerings include fixed wireless access broadband over 5G or 4G LTE networks. | Service revenue and customer trends, alongside the costs of operating and investing in communications networks. |
In short, Nokia is a supplier to network operators and other customers; Verizon is an operator selling communications services. Their sales growth, investment requirements, and risks should not be treated as directly interchangeable. Nokia’s 2025 annual report describes its customer groups and operating model. Verizon’s 2025 Form 10-K describes its service businesses.
What the latest reported results show
The most recent results covered here are Nokia’s Q2 and first half of 2026, released 23 July 2026, and Verizon’s Q2 2026 results, published 24 July 2026. These are useful operating indicators, not a complete investment comparison.
Nokia: stronger network and AI/cloud sales, but adjusted and reported profit diverged
- In Q2 2026, Nokia reported net sales growth of 9% year over year on a constant-currency basis and 8% as reported. Network Infrastructure net sales grew 12% on a constant-currency basis; Optical Networks grew 20%, IP Networks grew 16%, and sales to AI and cloud customers grew 105%.
- Comparable gross margin was 46.0%, up 70 basis points year over year, and comparable operating margin was 9.0%, also up 70 basis points. The company-defined comparable measures are non-IFRS measures.
- Reported operating margin was negative 1.0%; Nokia attributed this to faster restructuring. Comparable diluted EPS was €0.07, while reported diluted EPS was €0.00. The gap makes it important to distinguish adjusted performance from reported results.
- Nokia raised its 2026 comparable operating-profit guidance to €2.1–€2.6 billion, from €2.0–€2.5 billion. Management said it remained on track to deliver somewhat above the range midpoint; this is guidance, not a realized result.
Nokia also reclassified Fixed Wireless Access CPE and Enterprise Campus Edge as discontinued operations in Q2 2026, so comparisons with earlier periods may reflect a reporting change. See the company’s Q2 and half-year 2026 report.

Verizon: service growth and customer additions, with leverage to assess
- Verizon reported 2.8% year-over-year growth in mobility and broadband service revenue in Q2 2026.
- It added 184,000 postpaid phone customers and more than 550,000 total mobility and broadband connections during the quarter.
- The company said it raised full-year guidance for mobility and broadband service revenue, cash flow from operations, free cash flow, and adjusted EPS.
- Its reported net unsecured debt to consolidated adjusted EBITDA ratio was 2.5 times at quarter end.
Customer additions and service revenue provide evidence of operating momentum, but do not establish whether the stock is attractively priced or whether future cash generation will cover investment and capital returns. Verizon’s Q2 2026 results and 2025 Form 10-K provide further company-reported detail.
Dividends: compare yield and coverage, not isolated amounts
Nokia’s 2025 annual report said the board proposed that its 2026 annual general meeting authorize up to €0.14 per share in aggregate distributions for the 2025 financial year. On 23 July 2026, the board resolved to distribute €0.04 per share; after that distribution, up to €0.06 per share remained under the authorization. These are distribution amounts, not a dividend-yield comparison, and the remaining authorization is not itself a declared payment.

Nokia trades on Nasdaq Helsinki as NOKIA in euros and on the New York Stock Exchange as NOK in U.S. dollars. Verizon provides stock information and dividend history through its financial reporting page. To compare the income case, use share prices and declared dividends from the same date, account for currency, and distinguish gross yield from taxes and fees. Also assess payout coverage and the cash each business needs to invest. A single announced payment does not establish future dividend safety.
How to decide which stock is a better fit
1. Match the business model to the exposure you want
Nokia’s results depend on selling technology and infrastructure across customer groups and projects. Verizon’s depend on providing communications services and serving its subscriber base. Consider whether you want supplier exposure to network investment or operator exposure to service revenue and customer trends.

2. Test whether growth is durable
Nokia’s Q2 figures include constant-currency growth and a sharp increase in sales to AI and cloud customers. Verizon reported service-revenue growth and customer additions. For either company, look beyond headline growth: check currency effects, churn, recurring versus project revenue, and whether recent performance carries into later periods.
3. Compare profit and cash on consistent definitions
For Nokia, compare reported results with its company-defined comparable measures rather than treating them as equivalent. For both companies, examine operating cash flow, capital expenditure, and free cash flow using aligned periods and definitions. Verizon’s adjusted measures also should not be assumed to equal reported results.

4. Examine debt, investment needs, and capital returns
Review leverage alongside debt maturities, dividends, repurchases, and required network or technology investment. Verizon’s 2.5-times quarter-end ratio is a specific company-reported measure; it is not enough by itself to establish balance-sheet strength. Nokia’s distribution authorization and payment likewise do not settle the sustainability of future returns.
5. Compare valuation and risks before choosing
Use same-date share prices and valuation measures, and make the assumptions behind forecasts explicit. Consider competition, technology shifts, execution, regulation, currency exposure, and interest-rate sensitivity. The cited company releases and filings do not provide a complete same-date valuation table or a reader-specific risk profile, so they cannot settle which stock offers better value for a particular investor.

What these results can—and cannot—tell an investor
Nokia’s Q2 2026 figures point to growth in network infrastructure and AI/cloud customer sales, alongside a difference between comparable and reported profitability and a revised management outlook. Verizon’s results point to service-revenue growth and customer additions, while also making leverage and cash requirements relevant to the analysis. Neither set of company highlights, on its own, establishes a stock’s likely return or makes it the better choice.
For fuller financial comparisons, use Nokia’s annual report and Verizon’s audited 2025 Form 10-K alongside their quarterly results. Align fiscal periods and accounting measures, then compare operating cash flow, capital expenditure, debt maturities, and segment trends. Results, guidance, dividends, prices, and valuation can change quickly; Nokia planned to publish Q3 2026 results on 22 October 2026, after the reporting periods covered here.
