Best Buy planned 12:01 a.m. ET openings at nearly all U.S. stores, while GameStop’s event began the afternoon before and offered midnight pickups. Target, Walmart, Costco and select Staples had different arrangements—and walk-in stock was limited, not guaranteed. These were launch-week plans, not current store policies.
How the major retailers handled launch day
“Midnight” did not mean the same thing at every retailer, and not every location followed the same schedule. The comparison below reflects plans reported for the June 2025 U.S. launch.
| Retailer | Reported 2025 arrangement | What shoppers needed to know |
|---|---|---|
| Best Buy | Nearly all U.S. stores planned to open at 12:01 a.m. ET on June 5. | Openings were for preorder pickup and walk-in purchases. Best Buy said walk-in inventory of consoles, games and accessories would be limited; individual store participation and stock could vary. Best Buy’s May 29 announcement. |
| GameStop | Events began at 3 p.m. local time on June 4; pickups began at midnight ET / 9 p.m. PT. | GameStop advertised additional units in stores and online while supplies lasted. The earlier event start was not the same as the pickup time. GameStop’s launch announcement and Axios’s retailer roundup. |
| Target | In-store sales were planned for June 5; app and website availability was planned for June 6. | Stores used physical or digital tickets to reserve products for purchase. Axios’s retailer roundup. |
| Walmart | Online sales were announced for midnight ET. Launch sales also applied at some Supercenters in Pacific, Mountain, Hawaii and Alaska time zones; other stores opened at 6 a.m. local time. | Availability was limited and varied by location. Do not assume every Walmart store had launch-time stock. Axios’s retailer roundup. |
| Costco | The Mario Kart World bundle was reported available June 5. | The reported limit was one per membership and a maximum of one unit per seven days. Axios’s retailer roundup. |
| Staples | Select stores were expected to sell the console. | Inventory arrivals varied by location, and availability on a particular date was not guaranteed. The reported policy was first come, first served, with a one-unit limit. Axios’s retailer roundup. |
What time did Best Buy and GameStop open?
Best Buy: 12:01 a.m. ET on June 5
Best Buy’s May 29, 2025 announcement said, “On June 5, nearly all Best Buy stores in the U.S. will open at 12:01 a.m. ET for pre-order pickup and walk-in purchases.” That was a planned time in Eastern Time, not a universal local-midnight opening; confirm the announcement for a specific store before treating it as participating.
GameStop: event at 3 p.m. local time June 4; pickups at midnight ET / 9 p.m. PT
GameStop described an event beginning at 3 p.m. local time on June 4, with pickup beginning at midnight ET / 9 p.m. PT. It also advertised extra units for in-store and online purchase while supplies lasted. The event’s start and the start of pickup were separate times.

Could you buy a Switch 2 without a preorder?
Some retailers advertised walk-in or additional launch inventory, so a preorder was not the only stated route. But no store plan guaranteed that a shopper arriving without a preorder would find a console. Best Buy explicitly described walk-in inventory as limited; GameStop said extra units were available only while supplies lasted. Walmart and Staples also had location or inventory limits.
Demand made those qualifications important. The Associated Press reported preorder attempts with delays, errors, listings that became unavailable quickly and some cancellations. Nintendo also said delivery from the My Nintendo Store on launch day was not guaranteed, and pointed customers seeking launch-day access toward participating retailers. Neither point guarantees that retail walk-in stock was available when a shopper arrived. AP’s preorder-demand report and AP’s launch-day report.

What did the console cost at launch?
Nintendo’s U.S. launch announcement set the suggested retail price at $449.99 for the console and $499.99 for the Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World bundle. Those are historical launch MSRPs, not confirmation of today’s retail prices or stock. Nintendo’s April 2, 2025 announcement.
