New Relic CEO on APAC Growth and the Future of Observability: What Ashan Willy Said in 2024

In an August 2024 interview, New Relic CEO Ashan Willy discussed APAC’s varied markets and the need for observability across hybrid infrastructure, AI workloads and open-source tools. His growth and customer-savings figures are attributed claims, not independently verified results.

In an interview published on August 16, 2024, New Relic CEO Ashan Willy described Asia-Pacific as a collection of distinct markets and argued that observability needs to span cloud, on-premises and hybrid systems—including applications that use AI. His comments are a dated account of the company’s strategy and growth claims, not a current performance update or independent assessment.

What Willy said about New Relic’s APAC growth

Speaking with Computer Weekly’s Aaron Tan on August 16, 2024, Willy said New Relic’s APAC business was growing faster than the rest of the company and faster than its cloud growth, which he described as “over 17%.” He also said India was growing faster than the region. These are statements by the CEO in that interview; the article does not independently verify them, and they should not be read as current growth figures.

Willy also said New Relic’s research and development spending was close to 22% of revenue. That, too, is an interview claim rather than an audited figure established by the cited article.

Why he described APAC as several different markets

Willy’s regional growth narrative rested on different customer and technology transitions, not on a single APAC-wide pattern. The descriptions below are his characterization of market conditions, not findings from a comparative independent study.

Market Willy’s description
Australia Traditional, brick-and-mortar companies were moving to cloud-based observability. He described Australia as a successful market for New Relic.
India Digital-native businesses operate alongside banks, manufacturers and other traditional organizations undergoing digitization. Willy said India was growing faster than APAC as a whole.
Japan Many organizations still rely on on-premises systems while transitioning toward digital applications. Willy said the market was growing as digital transformation accelerated.
Southeast Asia Willy highlighted digital-native customers, including in Indonesia.

Why observability has to cover cloud, on-premises and hybrid systems

Observability platforms analyze operational data such as logs and traces to help teams understand application and infrastructure performance and identify problems early. Willy’s argument was that this visibility should continue across an organization’s whole technology estate rather than stop at the boundary between on-premises infrastructure and the cloud.

He said some cloud migrations can take years or even decades, making continuity important while systems change. He also described seeing some enterprises move workloads back on-premises because of cloud costs and concerns about AI, data and intellectual property. The interview gives no measurement of how widespread that movement is; it is Willy’s account of a trend he was seeing, not evidence that cloud migration has broadly reversed.

How he connected observability to AI workloads

Willy argued that AI may be used in only some components of an application because of cost and complexity, but that teams still need visibility into the whole application, including those components. That approach treats AI as part of a service’s operational picture rather than as an isolated feature.

He also pointed to NVIDIA NIM in discussing the deployment of large language models on-premises. The interview records the CEO’s product and market perspective; it is not an independent test of New Relic’s capabilities or of any deployment option.

What he claimed about cloud-cost savings

Willy said New Relic customers had saved “up to 30-40%” of cloud costs using observability. “Up to” describes an upper-bound company claim, not a typical outcome, a guarantee or a result independently substantiated by the interview. The article does not specify a measurement method or a customer sample for that figure.

Where observability and security may meet

Willy described anomaly detection as one possible link between observability and security. As he put it, “The core of observability is understanding what normal behaviour looks like and identifying anomalies.” Telemetry that helps teams identify unusual activity could also be useful to security teams, but detection alone is not the same as responding to an attack.

He said the industry should use observability data to help prevent attacks in real time, while acknowledging that New Relic would need partners to support that goal. The partner categories he named were:

  • Threat-intelligence providers
  • Extended detection and response (XDR) vendors
  • Security orchestration, automation and response (SOAR) vendors
  • Endpoint-security vendors

The interview discusses areas for potential partnership; it does not establish that specific integrations or commercial partnerships were available.

Why Willy emphasized OpenTelemetry and open-source tools

Willy said customers often use mixed tool stacks and that open-source tooling has significant use in Asia. He claimed seven of New Relic’s top ten customers used a combination of New Relic and open-source tools, and argued that supporting open-source tools as first-class citizens helps customers bring different tools together under one umbrella. The customer count is his statement in the 2024 interview, not an independently verified measure of adoption.

How later APAC survey figures add context

New Relic’s later APAC Observability Forecast summaries offer a different kind of evidence from Willy’s company-growth statements. They report survey findings, not New Relic revenue or customer growth, and their percentages and medians should not be treated as measures of the company’s performance.

  • 2025: New Relic said its APAC Observability Forecast surveyed 575 technology professionals across nine countries. Its summary gave regional medians of $2 million in annual observability spending, $2 million in cost per hour for a high-impact outage and $61 million in annual outage costs.
  • 2026: New Relic’s landing-page summary said 47.6% of APAC respondents experienced high-impact outages weekly or more often, compared with 36.2% globally. The page said the report covered 950 IT and engineering leaders across India, Japan, ANZ and Southeast Asia.

These are New Relic-published survey summaries for their stated respondent groups and years, not a census of all APAC organizations. The 2026 landing-page summary is brief, and the figures do not verify Willy’s 2024 growth, savings or customer-mix claims.

What the interview establishes—and what it does not

The interview presents Willy’s view of New Relic’s APAC opportunity and strategic priorities: differentiated regional transitions, visibility across mixed infrastructure, AI workload monitoring, cost awareness, security-related telemetry and support for open-source tooling. It provides a dated executive account, not a neutral market ranking, current product review, audited financial update or confirmation of specific security partnerships.
