New Hyper-Scale Data Center Developer Enters North American Market: What Happened to PointOne

PointOne’s 2018 market-entry announcement promised hyperscale campuses, major capital access and two North American sites. Current updates show a Mid-Atlantic platform and a proposed Remington campus—not proof of an operating facility.

PointOne was the developer named in the May 2, 2018 market-entry announcement. Its new PointOne Development Corp. was presented as a builder of very large facilities for hyperscale cloud customers such as Facebook, Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure. The announcement cited substantial prospective capital and two early sites, but those figures described a 2018 plan—not delivered capacity today. PointOne now describes a broader Mid-Atlantic campus platform, while its Remington, Virginia, project remains a proposed development rather than an operating data center.

What the 2018 announcement actually said

Data Center Knowledge reported on May 2, 2018, that PointOne Developments had formed PointOne Development Corp. to develop data centers for hyperscale cloud platforms. The article identified Facebook, Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure as examples of the intended customer base.

The report said the venture could access up to $7.5 billion in capital. That was a PointOne claim reported at the time, not evidence that the money had been raised, deployed or converted into operating facilities.

Two initial projects were identified:

  • Remington, Virginia: the site was reported to have access to 300 MW of utility power and to be about 50 miles south of Ashburn.
  • Alberta, Canada: the property, in Acheson near long-haul fiber routes, was reported to have access to 240 MW.

PointOne also claimed that modular mechanical and electrical systems could reduce construction to less than 180 days. That was a company claim about the described strategy, not an independently verified construction guarantee.

Who was involved in the original plan?

The 2018 story named four supporting organizations: infrastructure specialist Black & Veatch, consulting firm Critical Project Services, developer Diode Ventures, and investment and asset-management firm Enfinite Capital. Black & Veatch was specifically described as handling site-feasibility and design-build work for Remington.

The published announcement does not establish that these relationships continue today. It also said PointOne was considering additional sites in the United States, Australia, Ireland and the United Arab Emirates; current company pages reviewed for this article do not verify that those international possibilities remain active.

How PointOne describes its business now

PointOne Data Centers currently presents itself as a developer of scaled campuses for hyperscale, cloud and NeoCloud providers. Its stated offerings include full campuses, single-tenant data centers and powered-shell facilities. The company says it is established in Virginia’s core data-center markets and is expanding across the Mid-Atlantic.

That description is broader than the 2018 market-entry announcement: it emphasizes a repeatable campus-development platform and multiple facility formats rather than only the two originally announced properties.

Remington: historical figures versus the current proposal

PointOne’s current location information describes the Remington campus in Fauquier County, Virginia, as a 234-acre property designed for up to 304 MW of critical IT. It says the site has future-ready expansion capability to 600 MW of utility IT.

Those categories should not be treated as interchangeable with the 2018 report’s 300 MW of utility-power access. Utility power, utility IT and critical IT measure different points in the electrical and computing system. The 2018 and current numbers therefore do not prove that capacity increased from 300 MW to 304 MW, nor do they establish delivered operating capacity.

Item 2018 report Current company description Status and qualification
Location Remington, Virginia Remington Technology Park, Fauquier County Same general project area; current materials describe a proposal under development.
Land area Not stated 234 acres Current PointOne planning figure.
Power or IT figure 300 MW utility-power access Up to 304 MW critical IT; expansion to 600 MW utility IT Different measurement categories; not a like-for-like comparison.
Operating status Announced project Proposed campus continuing through development and construction No reviewed source establishes that the campus is operating.
Construction timing Less than 180 days under a modular approach Not stated The earlier figure was a PointOne claim, not a current delivery schedule.

What the 2026 power updates mean

Fuel-cell generation is the proposed strategy

On June 16, 2026, PointOne announced its intent to use behind-the-meter fuel-cell technology for power generation at the proposed Remington Technology Park campus. The company said it selected fuel cells after evaluating technical, operational, environmental and stakeholder considerations.

PointOne attributed this statement to co-founder and president Colin Clish: “After thorough evaluation, we determined that fuel cells represent the best power generation solution for Remington Technology Park.” This explains the company’s decision; it is not an independent finding that fuel cells are universally the best option.

Rezoning approval covers the equipment yard

On July 9, 2026, PointOne said the Fauquier County Board of Supervisors approved a rezoning amendment for the on-site natural-gas fuel-cell equipment yard planned for Remington Technology Park. The release described the project as continuing through development and construction. Rezoning approval is a land-use milestone, not proof that generation equipment or data-center halls are complete and energized.

What this means for readers evaluating the story

  • Identify the developer correctly: the company in the 2018 market-entry story was PointOne, through PointOne Development Corp.
  • Read the capacity numbers in context: the 2018 300 MW and 240 MW figures were reported access claims, while current Remington figures distinguish critical IT from utility IT.
  • Separate announcement from delivery: neither the 2018 article nor the 2026 company updates proves that the announced capacity is operating.
  • Treat funding as prospective: “up to $7.5 billion” described potential capital access in 2018, not a verified balance sheet or completed investment total.
  • Watch project milestones: permitting, utility interconnection, equipment installation, commissioning and customer occupancy would each provide stronger evidence of delivery than a planning announcement.

Why the distinction matters for finance and infrastructure analysis

Large data-center proposals can affect land values, utility planning, construction activity and local tax expectations, but a proposed megawatt figure is not the same as revenue-producing capacity. Analysts should confirm the measurement basis, project phase, source of power, interconnection status and customer commitments before treating a campus as an operating asset.

For Remington, the public record currently supports a company-planned 234-acre campus, a proposed fuel-cell power strategy and a county rezoning approval for related equipment. It does not establish completed construction, commercial operation or occupied capacity.
