Need2Buy announced in October 2000 that it had acquired Unimate Electronics GmbH, a Munich-area electronic-component trading and fulfillment business. The deal was intended to give Need2Buy a stronger foothold in Europe through Unimate’s regional infrastructure, expertise, and customer relationships—not to add a component manufacturer to its business.
What did Need2Buy acquire?
Need2Buy acquired Unimate Electronics GmbH, a company established in 1991 and based in the Munich area. Contemporary accounts described Unimate as a component trading and fulfillment business. Its specialties included electronic and electromechanical components and global sourcing.
The announcement was reported by EE Times on October 12, 2000, and the Los Angeles Times followed on October 24, 2000. The available reporting establishes that the deal was announced, but does not state its purchase price or quantify its financial results.
Was Unimate a distributor or a manufacturer?
Unimate was described as a component trader and fulfillment provider, rather than a manufacturer. Its role was to help customers source and distribute components. Its customer base included original-equipment manufacturers (OEMs), contract electronics manufacturers (CEMs), and distributors.

The company served customers in automotive, avionics, computer, industrial automation, medical, and telecommunications markets. That mix gave Need2Buy access to established relationships across multiple sectors of the electronics supply chain.
Why did Need2Buy buy Unimate Electronics?
Need2Buy presented the acquisition as a way to gain operational infrastructure, European regional expertise, and customer relationships. Those assets were meant to help it expand in Europe and support sourcing and distribution for participants in the component market.

Need2Buy chairman and chief executive Maury S. Friedman said the acquisition would help the company deliver a global supply-chain solution and assist participants in the European component market with sourcing and distribution. Unimate founder and chief executive Baruch Gruengras said the company’s personnel and regional capabilities would complement Need2Buy’s supply-chain expertise and technical knowledge.
How did the deal fit Need2Buy’s expansion strategy?
The acquisition was part of a broader plan spanning North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific. Need2Buy had established European headquarters in Munich, giving it a regional base alongside Unimate’s local capabilities. In Asia, Need2Buy was developing a marketplace with Mitsubishi Electric; EDN reported that Taiwan-based distributor World Peace Industrial joined that joint venture. EDN reported World Peace Industrial’s annual sales at about $1 billion, a figure for that distributor—not for Need2Buy or Unimate.

Together, these moves show the strategic logic of the Unimate deal: Need2Buy was pursuing a sourcing marketplace with regional presence and industry relationships, rather than relying on a purely online route to connect buyers and suppliers. The available reports describe the intended expansion; they do not provide a published measure of the acquisition’s operational impact.

A German registry summary says Unimate Network GmbH was merged into Unimate Electronics GmbH, with the merger entered in the Munich register on December 29, 2011. That entry records a merger between those entities; by itself, it does not establish Need2Buy’s full post-acquisition ownership history or whether every related entity continued operating.
