Nebraska’s State Treasurer will resume its auction of abandoned safe-deposit-box contents on eBay from 8 a.m. Central time October 6 until just before 8 a.m. October 13, 2026. The sale follows a nine-year gap since the previous auction in 2017. The items will be sold, but Nebraska says proceeds will remain recorded in each original owner’s name so a rightful owner or heir can still claim them.

What Nebraska is auctioning

The Nebraska State Treasurer’s Office says the lots come from safe-deposit boxes whose contents it received more than a decade ago. Examples named by the office include:

  • A white-gold diamond ring and a 14-karat gold mesh purse
  • A 1961 Topps No. 2 Roger Maris baseball card and a 1995 Sports Illustrated Huskers special edition
  • A 1929 $100 bill and a 1934 $500 Federal Reserve note
  • A 1917 watch with a 14-karat gold band, silver coins and sterling silverware
  • A 1986 double-struck dime minted in Denver

These are examples, not a complete list. The office says the full catalog will appear when the auction opens; it was not yet available on October 3. Each lot was inspected and appraised by independent Lincoln appraiser Tom Bassett. The announcement does not provide opening bids, item-by-item appraisals or sale results. When and where to bid

The online sale runs for seven days on eBay, opening at 8 a.m. Central time Tuesday, October 6, 2026, and ending just before 8 a.m. Central time Tuesday, October 13. The state announcement identifies eBay as the platform; consult the Treasurer’s Office announcement for the auction link and current catalog when it goes live. Employees of the State Treasurer’s Office and their immediate families are not eligible to bid.

Why this is the first auction since 2017

Nebraska Treasurer Joey Spellerberg confirmed that the prior auction was held in 2017, making the interval to the 2026 sale nine years. Nebraska Examiner reports that state law calls for an auction at least every five years. Asked about the longer gap, Spellerberg said he was unsure why it stretched beyond that interval; he mentioned the pandemic and staff turnover as context, not as a confirmed explanation. What happens to the sale proceeds

Nebraska says proceeds from each lot will be recorded in the original owner’s name and held until the rightful owner or an heir claims them. The office says it was unsuccessful in efforts to locate the original owners. In other words, the state sells the physical item and preserves the associated proceeds for a future claim; the sale does not make the money state revenue. The Treasurer’s Office says more than $317 million has been returned to rightful owners since the state’s unclaimed-property law took effect in the late 1960s. That is a statewide cumulative figure, not an estimate of proceeds from this auction. Nebraska State Treasurer’s Office announcement

How owners and heirs can search for property

If you think you or a family member may have unclaimed property in Nebraska, search the state’s official portal by last or business name, first name, city, ZIP code or property ID. The site also lets claimants check the status of an existing claim. Nebraska Unclaimed Property search

The Treasurer’s FAQ explains that property remains available to rightful owners or heirs and outlines documentation routes, including for heirs.
