He joined during a major restructuring, after senior operating roles at International Rectifier, and led a strategy that included shifting existing silicon-wafer plants from 200 mm to 300 mm production.
Who was Nabeel Gareeb?
Gareeb is a semiconductor-industry executive whose best-documented public leadership role was at MEMC Electronic Materials, a manufacturer of electronic-grade silicon wafers used by semiconductor companies. He joined MEMC as president, CEO and a director in April 2002.
MEMC appointed him as it worked through a major restructuring. EE Times reported in 2002 that the company had fallen short of cash in the second half of 2001. Gareeb said he wanted to bring “the customer’s perspective” to the company and help shape its long-term strategy for customers, stockholders and employees.
What did MEMC make, and what was its strategy under Gareeb?
MEMC made electronic-grade silicon wafers for semiconductor manufacturers. EE Times described it in 2005 as the world’s third-largest silicon-wafer supplier. The company’s strategy included upgrading existing plants from 200 mm to 300 mm production facilities rather than building entirely new plants. That approach focused on expanding the scale of existing manufacturing sites.

Coverage of Gareeb’s tenure also associates it with restructuring and a more customer-focused strategy. Those themes align with his stated aim of bringing a customer perspective to MEMC, but they do not by themselves establish that any single executive or initiative caused the company’s later financial performance.

In the company’s October 30 announcement, Gareeb said he was “proud of the foundation we have established at MEMC over the course of the last seven years.” The announcement and later transition disclosure establish the timing of his departure, but do not provide a verified explanation for why he resigned.

How to interpret the career and growth figures in his biography
The Soitec-hosted biography attributes several scale figures to the companies during periods in Gareeb’s career: International Rectifier revenue of $1 billion annually, MEMC revenue of $2 billion annually, and a peak MEMC market capitalization of $20 billion. These are claims from that company-hosted biography, not independently verified financial comparisons in the materials available here; they should be read with that attribution rather than as audited measures of Gareeb’s individual impact.
The same biography lists engineering degrees from Harvey Mudd College and Claremont Graduate School. The available sources establish Gareeb’s historical MEMC role and prior International Rectifier experience, but do not establish a verified employer or public role for him in 2026.
