The six-word subject line—“What did you do last week?”—was real, and the email asked federal employees to summarize their work. But the headline’s claim that NASA staff would be fired goes beyond what Elon Musk said: on February 24, 2025, he said nonresponse would be “taken as a resignation.” That post did not establish that NASA employees would automatically lose their jobs.
What was in the six-word email?
The phrase referred to the subject line, not the full instruction. The reported message asked recipients to reply with five bullet points describing their accomplishments from the previous week and to copy their manager. The February 2025 account of the email describes it as a request sent to federal workers, including NASA personnel.
The six-word subject itself was not a resignation statement. It was the request for a work summary that Musk later said employees should answer.
What did Musk say about nonresponse?
In a February 24, 2025 post, Musk said federal employees would receive the email and that failure to respond would be “taken as a resignation.” His post referred to federal employees broadly, not NASA alone.

- He said “resignation,” not “firing.” Those terms describe different routes out of a job: one is framed as the employee’s departure, the other as an employer-initiated termination.
- He did not lay out an enforcement process. The post did not explain how silence would become a legally effective resignation or show that every agency had adopted such a procedure.
- “Jobs on the line” is headline interpretation. It is not a direct quotation establishing that NASA workers would automatically be dismissed.
A public post is evidence of what Musk said, not proof by itself that each agency had issued an enforceable personnel order. The available sources do not establish that NASA employees were automatically fired for failing to reply. Whether an agency could treat silence as a resignation would depend on the employee’s status, agency instructions, applicable civil-service rules, and any formal action that followed.
Was it an official NASA order?
The available account describes a government-wide request, not an email originating as a NASA-specific firing order. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) had announced a test of government-wide email communications on January 23, 2025, but its announcement does not reproduce the later “What did you do last week?” message. OPM’s announcement said the capability was being tested to communicate with civilian federal employees from one address.

NASA employees are not one uniform employment category. NASA said it had about 18,000 civil-service employees in February 2025, but the agency also uses contractors, whose employment arrangements differ. NASA’s leadership announcement provides the civil-service workforce figure; it does not show that every NASA worker received identical instructions or faced the same employment rules.
Why were NASA employees reportedly told to pause?
Bloomberg reporting, as relayed in the February 2025 account, said NASA’s Space Operations Mission Directorate advised employees to wait before responding. A message at Johnson Space Center reportedly warned workers not to disclose proprietary or pre-decisional information to unauthorized recipients. The account also said formal workforce guidance was expected. These details are attributed to secondary reporting; the cited sources do not include a publicly accessible NASA directive confirming the internal messages. Bloomberg’s report is the cited account of the pause.

The reported concern points to a practical conflict: a work summary may be requested, while employees still have obligations not to disclose sensitive, classified, proprietary, or otherwise restricted material through an unauthorized channel. Leave, unusual schedules, and classified assignments could also make a standard five-bullet account a poor fit. The sources do not establish how each situation was handled.

The February work-reporting request was separate from OPM’s January 28, 2025 deferred-resignation offer. That earlier email invited employees who wanted to participate to reply with the word “Resign.” OPM described participation as voluntary and said there was no penalty for not responding to that offer. The original OPM email sets out those terms.

The distinction matters: the January message was an explicit offer to opt into a deferred-resignation program; the later email requested a summary of work, and Musk separately claimed that nonresponse would be treated as resignation. Treating the two communications as one “resignation email” obscures their different purposes and stated consequences.
What happened to the reporting process?
On August 8, 2025, OPM said it had ended the centralized “five things” email reporting process. Managers could still ask for similar updates directly if they found them useful, but OPM said it would no longer maintain a central inbox for the practice. OPM’s later statement describes that change. This is a historical February 2025 episode, not a current NASA employment alert.
