MultiBank Group Acquires Aetos China

MultiBank Group’s 2019 AETOS transaction covered mainland-China customers and related infrastructure, not AETOS Capital Group Pty Ltd or its global operations.

MultiBank Group did not buy AETOS Capital Group Pty Ltd outright. On June 3, 2019, it announced the acquisition of AETOS’s mainland-China customer base and related operating infrastructure. The transaction covered tens of thousands of customers, personnel and supporting operations in China, while AETOS’s businesses outside China were excluded.

What MultiBank Group acquired

The transaction involved a defined part of AETOS’s business rather than the entire AETOS group. MultiBank said it had acquired the mainland-China customers and the operational infrastructure associated with serving them.

Contemporary reporting described the customer base as numbering in the tens of thousands. The deal also involved operational staff, including developers, sales employees and support personnel. MultiBank planned to move the customers into a new division called MBG.

The public announcements did not disclose the purchase price, the exact number of transferred customers or the detailed legal structure of the transaction.

What was not acquired

AETOS’s operations outside mainland China were not included. This means the announcement should not be described as a purchase of AETOS worldwide or as an acquisition of the Australian parent company itself.

The AETOS entity named in the announcement was AETOS Capital Group Pty Ltd, an Australian company identified by AETOS’s current website as ACN 125 113 117 and the holder of Australian Financial Services Licence 313016. However, the available announcements describe the transferred asset as the mainland-China customer operation—not ownership of that Australian company.

Did the deal cover all AETOS operations? No. Operations outside mainland China were excluded.
How many customers transferred? The sources describe tens of thousands or a substantial number, but no precise total was published.

Timeline of the transition

Date Event
June 3, 2019 MultiBank announced the acquisition of AETOS’s mainland-China customers and related operational infrastructure.
June 8, 2019 The customer transfer was scheduled to take place after financial markets closed. This was the planned transfer date.
June 15, 2019 AETOS said it would cease providing financial services to clients residing in mainland China and orderly terminate its mainland-China operation.

The June 8 and June 15 dates refer to different steps. June 8 was the scheduled transfer to MultiBank; June 15 was AETOS’s stated deadline for ending its mainland-China services. They should not be treated as the same event.

Who operated the acquired business?

The British Virgin Islands Financial Services Commission currently lists MultiBank FX International Corporation as a regulated entity with the business type “Dealing as Agent.”

Draco Ng, identified as AETOS’s previous CEO, joined MultiBank as CEO of MBG. A substantial number of AETOS employees reportedly moved with the operation, including development, sales and support staff.

MultiBank said customers would continue receiving assistance from the same sales and support team during the transition. That was a statement about the planned customer experience; it does not independently establish that every employee, account process or service arrangement transferred unchanged.

Why AETOS left mainland China

An AETOS representative said the decision followed discussions involving the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) and advice from professional law firms. The representative said AETOS’s board had decided to stop providing financial services to residents of mainland China.

This regulatory context needs careful wording. The available reporting does not show that ASIC approved a MultiBank takeover of AETOS. It shows that AETOS referred to ASIC during its decision-making process, while the operation transferred to MultiBank through a British Virgin Islands entity.

What customers should verify

Anyone researching an old AETOS account or a later MultiBank claim should identify the exact legal entity named in the account documents, client notices and transaction records. A brand name alone does not establish which company held the account or which regulator applied.

  1. Check the account agreement. Look for the contracting entity, registered address and governing regulator.
  2. Review transfer notices. The relevant notice should identify whether the account, customer relationship or only operational support was moved.
  3. Match the dates. A notice referring to the June 8 scheduled transfer is different from AETOS’s June 15 service-termination date.
  4. Check payment records. Deposits, withdrawals and bank-account details may identify the entity that actually handled funds.
  5. Use the regulator’s register. Confirm the status and permitted activities of the named entity rather than assuming that a group-wide brand has one licence.

The deal announcements do not establish whether every account transferred automatically, whether customers had to complete new documentation or whether all mainland-China customers moved to MultiBank. Those details should be confirmed from the customer’s own records or official notices.

Commonly repeated inaccuracies

  • “MultiBank acquired AETOS.” This is too broad. The verified transaction concerned the mainland-China customer operation and related infrastructure.
  • “MultiBank bought AETOS Capital Group Pty Ltd.” The published evidence does not support that statement.
  • “The acquisition covered AETOS globally.” It did not; non-China operations were excluded.
  • “The deal was worth a specific amount.” No purchase price was disclosed in the available announcements.
  • “All Chinese customers transferred.” The strongest primary announcement uses qualified wording such as “substantial number.” A precise, categorical claim is not supported by that source.

Bottom line on the acquisition

The most accurate description is that MultiBank Group acquired AETOS’s mainland-China customer base and associated operating infrastructure in 2019. The customers were scheduled to move to MultiBank’s MBG division after markets closed on June 8, AETOS said it would stop serving mainland-China residents by June 15, and Draco Ng became MBG’s CEO. The transaction was not a disclosed purchase of AETOS Capital Group Pty Ltd or of AETOS’s worldwide business.
