Motorola’s 600,000-Droid Forecast: How Big Was the 2009 Android Comeback?

The oft-repeated “600,000 Droids” figure was a November 17, 2009 analyst forecast, not a confirmed Motorola sales result. Broadpoint AmTech analyst Mark McKechnie reportedly projected that Motorola could sell about 600,000 Droid phones through Verizon by the end of 2009, based on early channel checks and launch momentum. Phandroid and TheStreet both described the figure as an estimate. It suggested a promising product launch, but it did not prove that Motorola earned $2.86 billion, made a large profit, or had already completed a corporate turnaround.

What the 600,000 figure actually meant

The forecast concerned the original Motorola Droid, a Verizon-branded Android smartphone launched in the United States on November 6, 2009. It was not a count of every Motorola Android phone sold worldwide, and it was not a number reported by Motorola in an audited filing.

The estimate came from Mark McKechnie of Broadpoint AmTech. Contemporary coverage said his estimate was based on store and channel checks after launch. The same reporting had previously put opening-weekend sales at roughly 100,000 units. Wired reported that this earlier estimate assumed Verizon and Best Buy had received about 200,000 units and that approximately half had sold during the opening period. Fierce Network provided similar channel context.

Moving from approximately 100,000 launch-weekend units to 600,000 by year-end was therefore an extrapolation. It incorporated observed inventory movement, continuing demand, additional distribution and the holiday selling season. It was not a final consumer sell-through report.

The numbers behind the headline

Figure What it represented Status
600,000 Projected Motorola Droid sales through Verizon by the end of 2009 Analyst estimate
400,000 Estimated combined sales of other Motorola Android models and markets Analyst or secondary estimate
More than 1 million Implied Motorola Android total for 2009 Derived estimate, not a company-reported total
10 million Forecast Motorola Android-phone sales for 2010 Analyst forecast
$286 Estimated average price used in the contemporary calculation Analyst assumption
$2.86 billion 10 million projected phones multiplied by $286 Implied gross-sales math, not reported revenue or profit

The figures and their interpretation appeared in the November 17, 2009 coverage at Phandroid. The arithmetic is straightforward: 10,000,000 × $286 = $2.86 billion. The economic meaning is not.

Why the Droid looked like a breakthrough

Motorola’s handset business had been shrinking sharply. Its 2009 annual report recorded 55.1 million handset shipments, down from 100.1 million in 2008—a 45% year-over-year decline. Fourth-quarter shipments were 12.0 million, compared with 19.2 million in the fourth quarter of 2008. Motorola’s 2009 annual report provides those company-wide figures.

  • Fluid 120Hz Display: Features a large 6.7-inch HD+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for smooth scrolling and added durability.

Against that baseline, the Droid mattered as more than one model. It was Motorola’s high-profile Android bet, backed by Verizon’s distribution and a major marketing campaign. The phone offered a physical QWERTY keyboard, a high-resolution display and Google Maps Navigation, and it was positioned as a serious alternative to Apple’s iPhone. Contemporary launch descriptions are available from Wired and Engadget.

The roughly 100,000-unit opening-weekend estimate was encouraging, but it was not an iPhone-scale launch. Wired explicitly placed the figure in that broader market context.

Droid, CLIQ, DEXT and Milestone were not the same product

Motorola’s Android portfolio already extended beyond the Verizon Droid:

  • CLIQ: Motorola’s Android phone sold through T-Mobile in the United States.
  • DEXT: The related name used in some international markets.
  • Milestone: The GSM-market counterpart to the Droid, including European distribution.

The broader estimate of more than one million Motorola Android phones combined these products and markets. That makes it useful for understanding Motorola’s platform strategy, but unsuitable as a precise Droid-only sales count. The contemporary account also questioned whether the 600,000 projection included European Milestone sales, so that boundary remains uncertain. Phandroid discussed the ambiguity.

Why “mad loot” did not mean proven profit

A phone’s advertised or estimated price is not the same as the manufacturer’s recognized revenue, and revenue is not profit. Carrier subsidies can lower the amount a customer pays while changing the economics between the carrier and Motorola. Retailers retain margins, and Motorola incurs costs for components, manufacturing, software, marketing, research and development, warranty service, support, returns and unsold inventory. Prices also varied by market and currency.

TheStreet warned that sales to phone companies are not necessarily sales to end customers. Channel purchases can indicate inventory and demand, but they do not establish final consumer sell-through. TheStreet made that distinction in its November 17, 2009 report.

Motorola’s official 2009 filing reported a $111 million loss from continuing operations, although that was a substantial improvement over the $4.2 billion loss reported for 2008. The filing did not disclose a Droid-specific unit total, product-level margin or Droid profit figure. The annual report therefore cannot validate either the 600,000 forecast or the $2.86 billion illustration.

What the official record can—and cannot—prove

What it supports

  • Motorola had a major Android launch with strong early momentum.
  • The Droid gave Verizon a prominent iPhone competitor and gave Motorola a credible smartphone narrative.
  • Analysts saw enough channel activity to raise their year-end and 2010 forecasts.

What it does not support

  • That Motorola definitively sold exactly 600,000 Droids.
  • That all 600,000 units were purchased by consumers rather than shipped into the channel.
  • That Motorola received $2.86 billion in revenue from Android phones.
  • That the Droid alone made Motorola profitable or restored the handset division in 2009.

Was the Droid a real turnaround?

It was a strategically important early win, not proof of an immediate full recovery. The Droid demonstrated that Motorola could produce a well-received Android flagship and leverage a powerful carrier partnership at a time when its overall handset volumes were collapsing. That made the phone an important part of Motorola’s later Android-comeback story.

But the company-wide numbers still showed a deeply troubled business in 2009. The most accurate retrospective is therefore two-part: the 600,000 projection was a meaningful signal that the Droid might succeed, while the available public evidence does not establish a final unit count, product profit or complete corporate turnaround.

How to cite the claim accurately

For historical writing, the safest formulation is: “In November 2009, Broadpoint AmTech analyst Mark McKechnie estimated that Motorola could sell about 600,000 Verizon Droids by year-end.” Describing it as an analyst estimate preserves the distinction between a forecast, a shipment, a carrier purchase and a confirmed consumer sale.
