Mortgage Rates Today: March 4, 2025 — What We Can Verify

Freddie Mac’s next weekly survey after March 4 reported 6.63% for 30-year fixed mortgages and 5.79% for 15-year loans—but those are March 6 averages, not March 4 daily rates.

Freddie Mac’s weekly mortgage survey does not verify a specific rate move on Tuesday, March 4, 2025. Its next reported averages came on March 6: 6.63% for a 30-year fixed mortgage and 5.79% for a 15-year fixed mortgage. Those figures describe the later weekly survey, not rates available on March 4 or today.

What mortgage rates were reported around March 4, 2025?

Freddie Mac’s March 6, 2025, Primary Mortgage Market Survey reported a national average of 6.63% for 30-year fixed mortgages and 5.79% for 15-year fixed mortgages. The 15-year average was 5.94% the previous week. Freddie Mac’s release was published two days after the date in this headline, so it cannot establish the daily market or lender rate on March 4.

Freddie Mac’s historical survey archive is the official place to check weekly observations. A weekly national average is a benchmark, not a quote or guarantee for an individual borrower.

Was the broader trend downward?

On February 27, the Associated Press reported that Freddie Mac’s 30-year average had fallen for a sixth consecutive week. Freddie Mac Chief Economist Sam Khater said then: “The drop in mortgage rates, combined with modestly improving inventory, is an encouraging sign for consumers in the market to buy a home.” That report describes the trend through the preceding weekly survey; it does not confirm what happened to rates on March 4.

In the March 6 release, Khater said: “The decline in rates increases prospective homebuyers’ purchasing power and should provide a strong incentive to make a move.” That comment accompanied the March 6 data, not a verified March 4 rate update.

What the reported averages mean for borrowers

The 30-year and 15-year averages refer to different fixed-rate loan terms. A shorter term generally means paying the loan off sooner, but the survey figures alone do not show which option would be less costly for a particular borrower. Compare the actual offers you receive, including the rate, fees, monthly payment, loan term, and other terms—not just the headline rate.

Your available rate can differ from a national survey average. Lenders price offers for individual borrowers and loans, so anyone shopping for a mortgage should compare current, borrower-specific quotes. The March 6 figures are historical and should not be treated as current rates.
