Morgans Tips 290% Upside for True North Copper (ASX:TNC): What the Target Means

Morgans’ reported target for True North Copper was a dated, speculative scenario—not a promised return. See how the 290% figure was calculated and what the reported thesis leaves unanswered.

The headline refers to True North Copper Ltd (ASX:TNC) and a broker price-target scenario reported on 2 October 2026—not a promised return.

What the “290% upside” figure means

The Motley Fool Australia reported on 2 October 2026 that Morgans rated True North Copper a speculative buy and set a A$1.31-per-share target. The article compared that target with a 33.5-cent share-price reference. On those figures, the implied increase is about 291%: (A$1.31 ÷ A$0.335 − 1) × 100. The headline rounded it to 290%.

This is the gap between a dated reference price and an analyst target, not a forecast that the shares will reach that level. Share prices can move before an investor buys, and a target can change or fail to be reached. The calculation also excludes trading costs, taxes and any dividends.

The underlying Morgans note was not available for independent review here. The rating, target and thesis should therefore be understood as Morgans’ views as reported by The Motley Fool, rather than as independently verified broker research. The article also stated a company value of A$62.9 million, but did not specify its valuation basis or date clearly enough to treat it as a current market capitalisation.

What Morgans reportedly sees in True North Copper

The reported case rests on two Queensland projects—Mt Oxide and Cloncurry—and on the possibility that regional consolidation and available processing capacity could make Cloncurry’s copper-gold inventory more strategically valuable. Morgans described Mt Oxide as the flagship project and Cloncurry as a complementary, nearer-term development pathway.

The article attributes 152,000 tonnes of copper and 171,000 ounces of gold to a September 2026 Cloncurry resource announcement. Those figures are relayed through the article; the underlying ASX announcement was not available for verification. The article does not provide enough detail to assess the resource classification, confidence categories, project economics or how the figures translate into recoverable metal or a mine plan.

Morgans’ regional argument, as quoted in the article, points to transactions involving nearby companies as evidence that miners may be seeking assets and processing capacity in the Cloncurry district. The reported values and status are broker commentary reproduced by the article, not independently confirmed transaction disclosures:

Companies named Terms reported in the article Relevance to the reported thesis
Evolution Mining and Carnaby Resources Evolution had agreed to acquire Carnaby in a scheme valued at A$213 million. Morgans reportedly cited latent mill capacity at Ernest Henry as part of the regional context.
Austral Resources Australia and Hammer Metals Austral had secured a binding scheme for Hammer Metals, valued at A$80.7 million, after competing with Larvotto Resources. The reported commentary presented the deal as another sign of consolidation in the district.
AIC Mines and Materra Metals AIC had agreed to acquire Materra Metals’ Mt Cuthbert project for A$120 million, or about A$488 per contained tonne of copper, according to the article. The cited price was used in the broker commentary as a regional transaction comparison.

These are reported agreements or scheme terms, not evidence in themselves that each transaction has completed. Nor do deal values establish what True North Copper’s assets are worth: assets, deal structures, timing and assumptions can differ.

Potential catalysts—and what remains uncertain

The Motley Fool article said True North Copper had recently announced further high-grade copper and gold exploration results and expected a Cloncurry prefeasibility study later in 2026. It also quoted the company as saying drilling in late 2026 and into 2027 would target near-mine exploration and resource extensions. These are reported company statements and plans, not guaranteed milestones or outcomes.

  • Cloncurry prefeasibility study: A study could help clarify a development concept, but the article does not provide its results, economics or completion status.
  • Further drilling: Exploration may extend a resource, but drilling can also fail to find material additions. Results and timing depend on execution.
  • Mt Oxide work: Morgans cited further Mt Oxide drilling among potential catalysts, though the article does not provide enough detail to quantify its likely effect on value.
  • Regional processing access: Nearby mills and transactions form part of the broker’s rationale; the article does not establish that True North Copper has secured processing capacity or a commercial agreement.

The reported material does not settle key investment questions such as funding needs and possible dilution, permitting, infrastructure access, resource confidence, project economics or the valuation method behind Morgans’ target. Those details matter because a promising exploration story and a financeable mine are not the same thing.

How to assess the target as an investor

Before treating a broker target as a decision-making input, compare like with like and check primary company and ASX disclosures for current information. In particular, look at:

  • the target’s date and the share price used as its reference;
  • the broker’s rating, valuation assumptions and treatment of project risk;
  • resource classification and confidence, alongside any study results and project economics;
  • capital requirements, funding options and the potential effect of new shares;
  • permitting, infrastructure and any confirmed processing arrangements; and
  • whether exploration and study milestones have occurred on schedule.

The source article was published on 2 October 2026, and its share-price comparison used a 33.5-cent reference. The figures and project plans may change; check current disclosures rather than relying on that dated comparison. A single speculative-buy rating is one broker’s view, not a consensus or a substitute for assessing whether a high-risk exploration and development company suits your circumstances.
