Microsoft’s three-day onsite expectation is real, but it is not a single order requiring every employee worldwide to report to an office on the same schedule. The first major rollout began in the Puget Sound region on February 23, 2026, for covered employees who live within 50 miles of a Microsoft office. The policy Microsoft announced on September 9, 2025, was planned to expand in phases, with role and business-unit differences still relevant.
What Microsoft announced
On September 9, 2025, Microsoft said it was updating its “flexible work expectations” to call for three days per week onsite for covered employees. That is a hybrid schedule, not a five-day return-to-office order. Microsoft said the rollout would begin in Puget Sound, then extend to other U.S. locations and eventually locations outside the United States. Microsoft’s announcement also said business groups could deviate from the general expectation.

The distinction matters: Microsoft’s policy announcement describes a broad company expectation, while the worksite requirement for a particular employee can depend on role, location, primary residence and organization guidance.
When did the three-day policy start?
- September 9, 2025: Microsoft announced the change and phased rollout.
- September 19, 2025: Deadline in the announcement for employees seeking an exception.
- February 23, 2026: The Puget Sound implementation began for covered employees, according to GeekWire’s report.
February 23 was the confirmed start for the first regional phase; it should not be treated as a worldwide start date. Microsoft announced later phases for other U.S. locations and then international locations, but the public materials cited here do not establish one completed global implementation date.

Who was covered first?
The initial phase applied to employees in the Puget Sound area who live within 50 miles of a Microsoft office. That distance threshold is specific to the first phase; Microsoft’s announcement does not establish it as a worldwide rule. Public information does not resolve every practical detail, such as how distance is calculated, which office is used when several are nearby, or how employees who moved after accepting a role are treated. Those details require confirmation through Microsoft’s internal guidance.
For later phases, an employee should not infer coverage from the headline alone. Microsoft’s careers guidance describes worksite expectations as dependent on factors including role, primary residence and organization-specific guidance.
Does every Microsoft employee have to work onsite three days?
No. Microsoft’s careers materials describe a range of arrangements, from remote roles with zero in-office days to roles requiring multiple office days or full-time onsite work. The listed schedules include zero, one, two, three and four in-office days per week, alongside fully onsite roles. Job postings can specify the worksite expectation, and Microsoft said some businesses could operate differently from the general expectation.

That means the three-day policy is best understood as a company-wide change in expectations implemented by location and role—not a uniform rule that erased remote work or made every employee’s schedule identical. The public information also does not establish that contractors, vendors, customer-site workers or every international employee are covered in the same way.

What exceptions and special cases are public?
Microsoft said employees could request exceptions by September 19, 2025, and that some business groups could deviate from the general expectation. The public announcement does not provide a complete list of qualifying reasons or approval standards.
Employees should separately verify how the policy interacts with a remote-designated role, a different assigned worksite, a team-specific schedule, a move, a lengthy commute, leave, travel or a medical or disability accommodation. A discretionary policy exception and a legally protected accommodation are not interchangeable; employees with accommodation questions should consult HR and, where appropriate, a qualified adviser.

- Split ergonomic design encourages natural hand, wrist, and forearm positions
- Cushioned palm rest provides support and promotes a neutral wrist position
- Palm lift promotes a relaxed, natural angle for your wrist
- Media keys for music and video control
How employees can check whether the requirement applies
- Review the offer letter, current worksite designation and internal HR guidance.
- Check the job posting or role classification for the stated in-office cadence.
- Confirm which assigned office and primary residence are relevant to the applicable location rule.
- Ask the manager or HR representative which business-unit schedule applies, including any deviation.
- If an exception or accommodation has been approved, keep the written confirmation.
- Ask how the schedule is organized and measured for the team; public materials do not specify a universal attendance-measurement method.
These checks are especially important before relocating or making decisions about commuting costs: a media headline is not a substitute for written confirmation of an individual’s worksite and schedule.
Why Microsoft said it was changing the policy
Microsoft said its internal data suggested that employees who work together in person more often are more energized, empowered and productive. It connected the change to collaboration and the development of AI products, as well as workplace safety and security. That is Microsoft’s stated rationale; the announcement alone does not independently establish that office attendance causes higher productivity.

It can also be difficult to realize the benefit of an office day when teammates are dispersed or meetings remain video-based. How those trade-offs play out depends on the team, its location and how onsite time is used.
Is the policy connected to Microsoft’s 2026 layoffs?
Microsoft announced in July 2026 that it was eliminating approximately 4,800 roles, described as about 2.1% of its global workforce, as part of a broader company transformation. That announcement was separate from the September 2025 flexible-work update. The cited public statements do not establish that the office policy caused the job cuts or was designed to make employees resign.
