Microsoft did open a flagship Surface retail location in Taipei’s Xinyi business district in early July 2018. Thurrott reported the opening on July 8, 2018, describing a Surface-focused store that also displayed Xbox hardware and accessories. That report is historical: Microsoft’s current Taiwan pages show online purchasing routes, business resellers and repair providers, but do not verify that the Xinyi storefront is still operating.
What opened in Taipei?
The contemporary report described a flagship Surface store in Taipei’s Xinyi business district. It opened the previous week, placing the launch in approximately the first week of July 2018. The report used “Microsoft Store” as shorthand, but its description centers on Surface products rather than establishing a large, general-purpose Microsoft flagship equivalent to the company’s biggest stores.
The opening was reported by Thurrott on July 8, 2018.

Why the Taiwan opening mattered
Microsoft had already been selling Surface devices in Taiwan. The significant change was adding a physical experience where customers could handle the hardware, compare form factors and buy accessories. Thurrott also reported Microsoft’s claim that Taiwan Surface sales had grown roughly 10%–20%; the article does not provide a methodology, period definition or independent audit, so that figure should be treated as a contemporary company-attributed claim rather than a long-term market statistic.

- With 16 GB of memory, runs as many programs as you want without losing the execution
- The 13.5" 2256 x 1504 screen provides a great movie watching experience
- 512 GB SSD is enough to store your essential documents and files, favorite songs, movies and pictures
- 8 Hours battery run time helps you stay unwired and work longer non-stop
The same 2018 coverage placed Taiwan within Microsoft’s relatively small international retail footprint at the time: five locations in Japan, one each in Australia, China and Singapore, plus the Taiwan location and a planned London flagship. That was a snapshot of 2018, not a current store count.
Surface store versus a general Microsoft Store
“Microsoft Store” can suggest a permanent chain selling the full range of Microsoft hardware, software and services. The evidence here supports the narrower description: Microsoft opened a flagship Surface retail location in Taipei’s Xinyi district. The report does not establish the store’s floor area, exact operating model, a complete software selection or that it was Taiwan’s first full Microsoft Store.

Is the 2018 location still open?
There is no verified current operating status in the sources reviewed. Microsoft’s present Taiwan pages provide a Surface catalog and purchasing links, while its business page lists authorized partners; neither independently confirms that the 2018 Xinyi storefront remains open or has closed. Do not plan a visit using the 2018 article alone.

Business purchasing
For organizations, Microsoft’s Taiwan authorized-reseller directory lists Cloudinfo, Teksource, Leo, Systex, I-Planet, OITC and Hope. The directory is framed around business purchasing, deployment and management. A listed partner may not operate a conventional consumer checkout or carry every configuration.
Accessories and subscriptions
Keyboards, pens, mice, docks, power supplies and adapters can be separate purchases and may be model-specific. Microsoft’s business accessory information is at its Taiwan accessories page. Microsoft also presents Microsoft 365 services from its Taiwan home page; the reviewed material does not establish a dependable current Taiwan consumer price, so check the live checkout page rather than reusing 2018 pricing.

Repair and warranty support
Microsoft’s Taiwan authorized-service-provider documentation lists BYTE International and Hope Computers. Microsoft says authorized providers work directly with it, use genuine parts and provide depot repair; onsite service depends on provider and location. Confirm eligibility and availability before shipping a device.
Buying checklist for Taiwan
- Verify authorization: Use Microsoft’s current reseller directory for business purchases and confirm a consumer seller’s status separately.
- Check the exact configuration: Confirm model number, processor, memory, storage, keyboard language and included accessories.
- Confirm power and warranty: Imported units may have a different charger, keyboard layout or warranty jurisdiction. Ask whether Microsoft Taiwan will service the serial number.
- Price the complete setup: Include keyboard, pen, dock, tax, shipping and any Microsoft 365 subscription; a device-only price may not be usable as configured.
- Check the repair route before paying: Verify that an authorized provider can accept the model and that the proposed seller supplies valid proof of purchase.
- Treat marketplace listings separately: Used or imported devices can have battery wear, missing proprietary accessories, unknown repair histories or no local warranty.
Local purchase or import?
| Route | Potential advantages | Main risks |
|---|---|---|
| Authorized Taiwan channel | More straightforward local billing, returns, warranty and repair; lower risk of incompatible power accessories. | Fewer configurations may be stocked, and business partners may not offer consumer-style checkout. |
| Import from another market | Access to configurations or clearance prices unavailable locally. | Different keyboard and charger, warranty complications, shipping friction and possible regional feature limits. |
| Used or marketplace purchase | Lower upfront cost and access to discontinued models. | Battery degradation, missing accessories, counterfeit parts and uncertain Microsoft warranty coverage. |
What to do before visiting or ordering
- Do not assume the 2018 Xinyi address, hours or inventory are current.
- Start with Microsoft Taiwan’s current Surface pages and purchase links.
- For organizational deployments, contact a partner in the authorized directory and ask about stock, imaging, management and support.
- Obtain written confirmation of warranty territory, return terms, keyboard layout and repair eligibility for imported hardware.
- Compare total landed cost—not just the advertised device price—when evaluating overseas listings.
The Bottom Line
The Taiwan Surface-store story is real, but it belongs to July 2018: Microsoft opened a flagship Surface-focused location in Taipei’s Xinyi district. Current buying and support should be handled through Microsoft Taiwan’s live product pages, authorized partners and service providers, because the reviewed sources do not confirm that the original storefront still operates.
