The company described the move as organizational change to position itself for success in a dynamic marketplace; contemporaneous reporting said it focused on reducing management layers. Microsoft was investing heavily in AI, but the available statements do not establish AI as the cause of these particular layoffs.
How many people did Microsoft lay off in May 2025?
The Associated Press reported that Microsoft planned to eliminate about 6,000 jobs, or nearly 3% of its workforce, in the May 13, 2025 announcement. The cuts spanned levels, teams and geographies, according to contemporaneous reporting. Microsoft did not identify a complete list of affected teams in the cited statements, so the announcement should not be read as a cut confined to one division.
Microsoft’s FY2025 annual report later put its workforce at approximately 228,000 full-time employees as of June 30, 2025. That is a useful later reference point, not the exact headcount denominator for the May announcement. Microsoft FY2025 annual report.
What reason did Microsoft give?
Microsoft’s public explanation, quoted by the Associated Press on May 13, was: “We continue to implement organizational changes necessary to best position the company for success in a dynamic marketplace.” The company’s wording described an organizational rationale, not a specific claim that AI had replaced the workers.

AP’s contemporaneous coverage characterized the cuts as focused on reducing management layers. That is consistent with a restructuring intended to simplify the organization, but it does not by itself establish that every affected role was managerial or that AI was the direct reason for eliminating those roles. Associated Press coverage, May 13, 2025.
Were the May 2025 layoffs caused by AI?
There is not enough evidence in Microsoft’s cited public explanation to say that AI caused the May cuts. The announcement framed them as organizational change; AP reported the effort to reduce management layers. Microsoft’s broader investments in AI infrastructure are relevant business context, but investment happening alongside layoffs does not prove a direct causal link.

Microsoft later reported that Azure revenue exceeded $100 billion for fiscal 2026 and that Microsoft 365 Copilot had more than 30 million paid seats. Those company-reported figures show the scale of its AI-related business activity; they do not establish the reason for a workforce decision announced in May 2025. How this differs from Microsoft’s July 2026 cuts
Microsoft announced a separate reduction on July 6, 2026. The company said it would eliminate about 4,800 roles, approximately 2.1% of its global workforce, and framed the action as aligning people, investments and energy with company priorities. Microsoft also said the roles eliminated in that round were not being replaced by AI. This later announcement should not be combined with the May 2025 total or treated as a clarification of its cause. Microsoft organizational update, July 6, 2026.

What the May announcement does—and does not—tell workers
The announcement establishes the scale and broad organizational scope of the cuts, but the cited public statements do not provide a comprehensive team-by-team list or a breakdown of individual circumstances. For workers trying to understand whether a specific role or group was affected, the headline percentage alone cannot answer that question.
At the time, Glassdoor lead economist Daniel Zhao told AP that large technology companies had trimmed workforces while changing strategies and pulling back from the more aggressive hiring of the early post-pandemic years. That offers industry context, not proof of Microsoft’s internal reasoning beyond the company’s stated rationale. PBS NewsHour republication of AP reporting, May 2025.
