Current status: This is a July 2024 story, not a new August 2026 announcement. Microsoft removed Copilot GPT Builder from the $20-per-month consumer Copilot Pro plan, while Windows 11 Copilot moved away from its original sidebar toward a web-style app. Those were separate changes, but together they weakened Copilot Pro’s identity as a premium, Windows-integrated assistant. Microsoft’s consumer lineup has since shifted toward Microsoft 365 plans, so existing subscribers should check the plan and renewal details in their Microsoft account.
What Microsoft removed from Copilot Pro
On July 10, 2024, Microsoft ended the ability for consumer Copilot Pro subscribers to create or configure custom Copilot GPTs. Microsoft’s customer notice also said that previously created GPTs would no longer be accessible. The reported notice gave users a limited period to save their custom instructions before the associated data was deleted. The change was reported on July 22, 2024 by Windows Latest.
This was a retirement of one premium feature, not the cancellation of every Copilot Pro benefit. Enterprise and education customers had a different GPT-related experience, so a consumer account should not be assumed to have the same tools as a work or school tenant.
Why the Windows 11 PWA change mattered
A PWA is an app-shaped website
A Progressive Web App (PWA) is a website packaged to launch like an installed application. It can have a Start-menu entry, taskbar icon, standalone window and app-like notifications, while still depending heavily on a web service and browser engine.

- [Brilliant 15” Touchscreen Display] — Bright HDR tech, ultra-thin design, and optimized screen space.
A PWA is not automatically worse than a native application. The important change was the product expectation: Windows Copilot was no longer presented primarily as a deeply embedded Windows assistant. The classic sidebar experience was replaced by a newer app interaction model, as Microsoft documents in its Windows Copilot guidance.
What users lost or saw reduced
- The original sidebar-style Copilot experience ended.
- The expectation that Copilot could directly manipulate Windows settings was reduced; the app became primarily a chat, search, writing, image-generation and conversational interface.
- Use depended on an internet-connected cloud service rather than creating an offline, local Windows assistant.
- Consumer Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot for work or school remained separate experiences.
Microsoft says the consumer Windows Copilot app does not support Microsoft Entra authentication. Someone signing in with an organizational account is redirected to the Microsoft 365 Copilot web experience.
What Copilot Pro originally promised
Historical Microsoft sales material priced Copilot Pro at $20 per user per month. That was a historical offer; Microsoft’s current consumer buying flow has changed. The old proposition combined several benefits:
- Preferred access to advanced models and higher usage allowances.
- Copilot on the web, iOS, Android, Windows, Edge and Start.
- Copilot features in web versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
- Additional functionality for customers who also had Microsoft 365 Personal or Family, particularly in installed desktop applications.
- At the time, Copilot GPT Builder for creating personalized GPTs.
The GPT Builder retirement therefore removed a differentiating capability, while the Windows client change reduced the sense that the subscription bought a system-level assistant. Neither event proves Microsoft’s profitability; claims that the feature was removed because Copilot Pro was unprofitable are speculation, not a stated Microsoft explanation.

Was Copilot Pro still worth paying for?
| Subscriber type | How the July 2024 changes affected the decision |
|---|---|
| Microsoft 365-heavy user | Still potentially useful for Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, plus higher usage. The value depended on using those applications regularly. |
| Custom-GPT builder | Much less attractive: the feature that may have justified the subscription was removed, and existing GPTs were scheduled to become inaccessible. |
| General chatbot user | Harder to justify a $20 plan when free Copilot and other general AI services could cover occasional chat, search and image requests. |
| Windows-integration seeker | Less attractive because the Windows experience moved toward a dedicated web window rather than the former sidebar assistant. |
The practical conclusion at the time was that Copilot Pro made more sense as a Microsoft 365 productivity add-on than as a standalone Windows AI product.
What changed after 2024
Microsoft’s former Copilot Pro purchase page now redirects toward its consumer Microsoft 365 lineup. The current Microsoft 365 Premium offer combines Copilot with Microsoft 365 desktop applications, OneDrive storage and higher AI usage limits. Exact prices and included allowances can vary by country, promotion, billing term and account status, so use the live checkout page for your region.
Microsoft says Premium’s AI features are available only to the subscription owner, even when the broader subscription can be shared. That distinction also matters for Microsoft 365 Family: sharing Office and storage does not automatically give every household member the same Copilot entitlement.
Microsoft support describes AI credits and Copilot availability across Microsoft 365 Personal, Family and Premium. Credits and supported features can apply in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Forms, OneNote, Designer, Notepad, Photos and Paint, with limits varying by plan, platform, language and account. See the Microsoft 365 Copilot subscription FAQ for the current qualifications.

The Windows app kept changing
The PWA was not the final technical chapter. Later reporting described movement among PWA, more native, WebView-based and Edge-derived implementations. In 2026, Windows Latest reported another move toward a web wrapper, and separately described an Edge-derived Copilot package in later technical coverage. Those reports are technical analysis rather than a complete official Microsoft architecture statement.
For users, the durable lesson is simpler: the visible Windows client can change independently of the subscription’s account and cloud features. Two PCs may show different interfaces during a staged rollout, and an installed Copilot icon does not guarantee native Windows controls or offline operation.
Consumer Copilot, Microsoft 365 Copilot and work accounts are different
| Experience | Who it is for | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Free consumer Copilot | People using a personal Microsoft account, or occasional visitors | Chat, search-assisted answers, writing help and image-related features without a Microsoft 365 bundle; usage and feature limits apply. |
| Microsoft 365 consumer plans | Personal, Family or Premium subscribers | Copilot in supported Microsoft 365 apps, with AI credits and limits that vary by plan. AI access is not automatically shared with every family member. |
| Microsoft 365 Copilot for work or school | Organizations using Microsoft Entra accounts | A separate commercial experience. The consumer Windows app does not authenticate directly with Entra accounts and redirects organizational users to Microsoft 365 Copilot. |
Check your current plan before cancelling
The old $20 Copilot Pro offer may not describe an existing customer’s renewal terms. Regional pricing, grandfathered arrangements and billing platforms can differ. To see the actual subscription:
- Sign in to the Microsoft account that paid for the subscription.

Alternatives for different needs
Microsoft 365 Premium
Choose Microsoft 365 Premium when you want Copilot together with desktop Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneDrive and Microsoft’s broader consumer services. It is a poor fit if you only want a general chatbot or need the AI entitlement for several family members.
Microsoft 365 Personal or Family
These plans can suit someone who already needs Office and storage and wants Copilot with a lower allowance than Premium. Check the live Microsoft 365 comparison page for current credits, supported apps, language availability and sharing rules. They are not a replacement for the retired consumer GPT Builder.
Free Microsoft Copilot
The free Copilot service is the simplest choice for occasional chat, search-assisted answers, writing help and image features without a paid Microsoft 365 bundle. It is less suitable for heavy usage or Copilot inside desktop Office applications.
ChatGPT Plus
ChatGPT Plus is a general-purpose AI subscription rather than a Microsoft 365 package. It may be the more relevant comparison for general AI work or custom-assistant use, but it does not provide Microsoft 365 desktop apps, OneDrive or Copilot embedded in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Check the official pricing page for the current price.
Bottom line
Microsoft did downgrade the consumer Copilot Pro proposition in July 2024 by removing GPT Builder and access to existing consumer GPTs. The Windows move to a PWA-style client was a separate change that made Copilot feel more like a cloud chatbot in an app window than a Windows-native assistant. Copilot Pro was not made worthless, but its clearest remaining rationale was Microsoft 365 productivity integration—not custom GPT creation or deep control of Windows. Today, compare Microsoft 365 Premium, Personal or Family, free Copilot and general AI subscriptions according to the apps, storage, usage limits and account type you actually need.
