Yes—but only on April 4, 2024. Microsoft uses April 4, 1975, as its recognized founding date, so the company turned 49 on April 4, 2024, 50 on April 4, 2025, and 51 on April 4, 2026. The headline “Happy birthday, Microsoft! The company officially turns 49 today!” is therefore outdated unless it is explicitly dated to April 4, 2024.
Microsoft’s anniversary is more than a number. It marks the evolution of a small software venture built around an early hobbyist computer into a diversified company spanning operating systems, productivity software, cloud infrastructure, gaming, developer tools and artificial intelligence.

Why the “49 today” claim needs a date
Microsoft’s standard anniversary date is April 4, 1975. The company’s own anniversary account confirms that date and identifies Bill Gates and Paul Allen as its founders (Microsoft’s 50th-anniversary announcement).
| Date | Anniversary | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| April 4, 2024 | 49th | The original “turns 49 today” wording was accurate. |
| April 4, 2025 | 50th | Microsoft publicly celebrated its 50th anniversary. |
| April 4, 2026 | 51st | Microsoft reached its 51st founding anniversary. |
“Birthday” is a friendly shorthand. “Founding anniversary” is more precise for a corporation, particularly because Microsoft’s early work and formal organization developed during 1975 rather than appearing fully formed in a single moment.

Microsoft began with Altair BASIC, not Windows
In January 1975, the Altair 8800 appeared on the cover of Popular Electronics. Gates and Allen saw an opportunity to make the machine easier to program and developed a BASIC interpreter for it. Microsoft’s historical timeline describes this early work and the way the company’s name and partnership took shape during that year (Microsoft Learn’s 1975 history).
Altair BASIC was the company’s first defining commercial product. That origin matters: Microsoft started as a software and developer-tools company serving another company’s hardware platform. It was not initially a Windows business.
How a programming-language company became a PC powerhouse
From languages to operating systems
Microsoft expanded from BASIC and other programming tools into operating-system software. Its relationship with IBM in the early 1980s helped place Microsoft software at the center of the personal-computer market. MS-DOS and, later, Windows made the company a standard supplier for PC users and manufacturers.
Windows and Office become the desktop center
During the 1990s and 2000s, Windows and Office turned Microsoft into a central provider of desktop operating systems and productivity applications. The company also built server products, enterprise tools, Internet services and business software, so its growth was never solely a Windows story.

Diversification beyond the desktop
Microsoft added Xbox and other gaming businesses, search and online services, devices, enterprise applications and developer tools. Those moves broadened the company’s reach from personal computers to living rooms, workplaces and software-development communities.
The cloud changed Microsoft’s business model
Azure and Microsoft 365 shifted Microsoft toward continuously delivered cloud services and subscriptions. Azure provides cloud infrastructure and platform services, while Microsoft 365 combines productivity applications with online collaboration and management capabilities. Microsoft’s filings describe a business that includes cloud offerings, business applications, development tools, games, devices and services rather than a single flagship product (Microsoft’s 2024 Annual Report).
Rank #3
This transition also helps explain why Microsoft’s fiscal reporting should not be confused with its age: the company’s fiscal year ends June 30, while its founding anniversary is April 4.
What Microsoft is today
Microsoft’s current portfolio spans consumer, commercial and developer markets. Its best-known areas include:
- Windows for personal-computer operating systems.
- Microsoft 365 and Office for productivity and collaboration.
- Azure for cloud computing and infrastructure.
- Teams for workplace communication and collaboration.
- Dynamics for business applications.
- GitHub and other developer tools for software development.
- LinkedIn for professional networking and related services.
- Xbox and gaming across consoles, services and content.
- Bing and online services supported by advertising and search technology.
- Copilot and other AI capabilities integrated across products and services.
Its 2025 Form 10-K groups the company’s reporting into Productivity and Business Processes, Intelligent Cloud, and More Personal Computing, a structure that illustrates how far the business has moved beyond its original PC focus (Microsoft’s 2025 Form 10-K).

Packaged software to cloud subscriptions
Microsoft’s products moved from software installed on individual computers toward services updated and delivered through the cloud.
Desktop platform to cross-device ecosystem
Windows remains important, but Microsoft now connects PCs, phones, browsers, consoles, servers and data centers through shared accounts, applications and services.
Windows-centered company to cloud-and-AI platform company
Microsoft’s 2024 annual report described the business as entering its 50th year during an “AI platform shift.” That framing places AI alongside Azure and Microsoft 365 as a strategic platform layer, rather than treating it as a standalone app.

Software vendor to diversified technology company
Enterprise software, cybersecurity, developer platforms, gaming, advertising, devices and professional networking all contribute to Microsoft’s modern identity. Satya Nadella, whom Microsoft identified as chairman and chief executive in its 50th-anniversary announcement, leads that diversified business.
The accurate way to describe Microsoft’s 49th anniversary
If you are updating or quoting the original headline, use an absolute date: “Microsoft turned 49 on April 4, 2024.” In 2026, the company is 51. The enduring story is not the stale word “today,” but the transformation from a two-person effort to bring BASIC to the Altair 8800 into a global platform company whose businesses include cloud computing, productivity software, gaming, developer tools and AI.
