On Microsoft’s July 30, 2024 earnings call, CEO Satya Nadella said Microsoft 365 Copilot was growing faster than any previous generation of software Microsoft had launched as a suite inside Microsoft 365. That was a qualitative adoption claim—not a disclosed Copilot revenue-growth percentage and not a ranking of every Microsoft product.
Microsoft backed the claim with rapidly rising customer, usage and large-enterprise seat metrics. However, it did not report Microsoft 365 Copilot revenue, margins, conversion or churn separately, so the call demonstrated adoption momentum rather than a complete financial case.
What Nadella actually claimed
The call covered Microsoft’s fiscal fourth quarter, ended June 30, 2024. Nadella described Copilot as a newer software-as-a-service layer built on Microsoft 365 and said its growth rate was faster than that of any previous generation of software Microsoft had launched as a suite within Microsoft 365. The relevant wording matters: it was narrower than saying Copilot was Microsoft’s fastest-growing product or the fastest-growing software product in the market.
The statement appears in Microsoft’s official Q4 FY2024 earnings transcript. It was management’s characterization of early momentum, not a published percentage or an independently audited ranking.

The adoption evidence Microsoft disclosed
Microsoft reported several quarter-over-quarter indicators covering workplace use, customer expansion and enterprise deployments:
| Metric | Q4 FY2024 disclosure |
|---|---|
| Daily workplace Copilot users | Nearly doubled quarter over quarter |
| Copilot customers | Increased more than 60% quarter over quarter |
| Customers with more than 10,000 seats | More than doubled quarter over quarter |
| Organizations using Copilot Studio | More than 50,000, up more than 70% quarter over quarter |
| Organizations using Power Platform AI capabilities | More than 480,000, up 45% quarter over quarter |
| Named enterprise example | EY was preparing to deploy Copilot to 150,000 employees |
Microsoft also named Capital Group, Disney, Dow, Kyndryl and Novartis among customers. Nadella said a majority of enterprise customers were returning to buy more seats. That is evidence of expansion, but it remains a statement from Microsoft rather than an independently verified retention study.
What the financial statements show—and do not show
Microsoft’s company-wide results supplied the financial backdrop. Its Q4 FY2024 release reported approximately $64.7 billion in revenue, up 15% year over year, with net income of about $22.0 billion and diluted earnings per share of $2.95. The figures are reported in Microsoft’s SEC earnings release.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.

| Office 365 commercial revenue growth | 13% reported; 14% in constant currency |
| Paid Office 365 commercial seats | Up 7% year over year |
| Microsoft 365 consumer subscribers | Approximately 82.5 million |
Microsoft said Office 365 commercial average revenue per user benefited primarily from Microsoft 365 E5 and Copilot for Microsoft 365. That connects Copilot with higher monetization of the broader suite, but it does not identify Copilot’s own revenue.

- Standalone Microsoft 365 Copilot revenue or revenue growth.
- A separate Copilot gross margin or profit figure.
- A quarterly paid-seat count reported specifically for Copilot.
- Trial-to-paid conversion, average revenue per customer or churn.
- The percentage of Microsoft 365 commercial customers using Copilot.
- Independent evidence that the full customer base achieved a particular productivity gain.
Consequently, customer counts, usage and seat expansion should not be substituted for revenue, retention or profitability metrics.
Why Microsoft believed Copilot could scale
An installed distribution base
Microsoft can sell Copilot to organizations that already buy Microsoft 365, rather than building a completely new identity, billing and collaboration relationship. Existing administrators, contracts and user directories reduce distribution friction.

Embedded work applications
Paid Microsoft 365 Copilot is designed to work across Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams. The value proposition is therefore an assistant inside existing workflows, not merely another chatbot tab.
Enterprise controls and organizational data
Copilot can use Microsoft 365 content subject to the permissions already assigned to a user. Entra identity, compliance tooling and Microsoft’s security administration are part of the platform argument. Those controls can simplify deployment, but poor SharePoint, OneDrive or Teams permissions can also make inappropriate content easier for an authorized user to discover.
Expansion into agents
Copilot Studio extends the strategy beyond a personal assistant. Organizations can build agents grounded in their own data and connected to workflows. Microsoft’s more than 50,000-organization figure shows interest in that layer, but Studio can introduce capacity packs, Copilot credits, Azure requirements or metered consumption depending on the design. The current licensing guide is available at Microsoft’s Copilot Studio licensing guide.

Do not treat every Copilot as the same product
| Product | Role | Buying implication |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 Copilot | Paid assistant integrated with Microsoft 365 apps and organizational data | Best aligned with Microsoft-centric productivity workflows |
| Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat | Secure, web-grounded chat included at no additional cost for eligible users with qualifying subscriptions | Useful for governance and adoption pilots, but not equivalent to full in-app Copilot |
| Copilot Studio | Custom-agent and automation platform | Powerful for specialized workflows, with potentially usage-based costs |
| GitHub Copilot | Developer-focused product | Its reported contribution to GitHub growth should not be counted as Microsoft 365 Copilot growth |
| Consumer Copilot and Copilot Pro | Consumer offerings | Separate products with different users, packaging and economics |
Nadella also said GitHub Copilot represented more than 40% of GitHub’s revenue growth in the year and had become larger than GitHub was when Microsoft acquired it. Those remarks concern GitHub’s developer product, not the Microsoft 365 Copilot metrics above.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When an organization should evaluate Microsoft 365 Copilot
Likely strong fit
- Most employees already work daily in Microsoft 365 applications.
- Business data is organized in SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams or Exchange with defensible permissions.
- IT wants one administration, identity, compliance and security stack.
- The organization can fund training, governance and measurement rather than treating licenses as self-justifying.
Possible poor fit
- The company primarily uses Google Workspace, Slack, Zoom or other non-Microsoft tools.
- Data is fragmented, stale or broadly permissioned.
- Only a small specialist group needs advanced assistance, making broad per-user licensing inefficient.
- The business expects autonomous decisions instead of outputs requiring human review.
- A domain-specific application would solve the workflow more reliably than a general assistant.
A practical evaluation sequence
- Inventory Microsoft 365 licenses, data locations and access permissions.
- Start with a defined group and use cases, such as meeting summaries, email drafting or spreadsheet analysis.
- Measure baseline time, quality, rework and adoption before expanding seats.
- Provide prompt training, acceptable-use rules and a human-review requirement for consequential work.
- Set a budget and usage controls for Copilot Studio or other metered agent workloads.
Microsoft’s current business pricing page lists Microsoft 365 Copilot Business at a displayed $18 per user per month when paid annually, down from a shown regular price of $21, and $25.20 with a monthly commitment. The page also says a qualifying Microsoft 365 subscription is required and that the business plan supports up to 300 users. These displayed prices are subject to promotional, regional and eligibility conditions; check Microsoft’s pricing page before making a purchase.
How the alternatives differ
Google Workspace with Gemini is generally the more natural comparison for organizations standardized on Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Meet and Drive: Google Workspace. ChatGPT Business and Enterprise are relevant when a company wants a general-purpose AI workspace and model flexibility rather than deep native Office integration: ChatGPT Business and ChatGPT Enterprise. Salesforce Einstein is better aligned with CRM-centered sales and service data: Salesforce Einstein. Slack AI fits organizations whose primary knowledge layer is Slack: Slack AI.

- Stream from all your favorite services over WiFi. Pair a Bluetooth device with the press of a button. Connect a turntable or other audio source using an auxiliary cable and the Sonos Line-In Adapter.²
- Go from unboxing to unbelievable sound in just a few minutes. Simply plug in the power cable, connect your phone or tablet to WiFi, and open the Sonos app.
- With a tap in the Sonos app, Trueplay tuning technology analyzes the unique acoustics of your space and optimizes the speaker’s EQ. So all your content sounds just the way it should.
These products are not interchangeable. The decisive question is whether the organization needs AI embedded in an existing productivity suite, a general AI workspace, CRM automation or a custom-agent platform.
The investor-level interpretation
Microsoft had credible evidence of unusually fast early adoption: users were returning more often, customer counts were rising, large deployments were expanding and related agent tools were gaining organizations. Its installed base also gives Copilot a distribution advantage that a standalone AI startup does not have.
But the earnings call did not establish a standalone Copilot growth rate, revenue contribution, margin profile or long-term retention rate. The most accurate reading is that Microsoft reported strong adoption velocity and positioned Copilot as a strategic monetization layer for Microsoft 365—not that it proved a precisely measurable, independently verified financial growth record.
