It is a fixed-feature, on-premises Office release—not a new Microsoft 365 subscription. Microsoft 365 Apps remains the better fit for most connected organizations; LTSC is designed for regulated, specialized, validated or disconnected systems where a stable software baseline matters more than continuously changing features.
What Microsoft launched
“LTSC” means Long Term Servicing Channel. Office LTSC 2024 is a one-time, fixed-feature commercial release licensed through Microsoft Commercial Licensing or an authorized licensing partner. After deployment, Microsoft supplies security, quality and cumulative updates, but does not add new features.
That is different from three products often confused with it:

Release date and support lifecycle
- General availability: September 16, 2024, announced by Microsoft for existing commercial and government volume-license customers.
- Support period: Five years under the Fixed Lifecycle Policy.
- End of support: October 9, 2029.
- Extended support: None under the applicable policy.
The 2026 buying question is therefore not whether LTSC is “new,” but whether its remaining support window and fixed servicing model fit the organization’s operational timetable.
Who should use Office LTSC 2024?
LTSC is intended for machines and workflows that cannot accept frequent feature changes or rely on permanent cloud connectivity. Examples include:
- Government, defense and highly regulated environments.
- Medical, laboratory, industrial and manufacturing systems with validated workflows.
- Devices in permanently or intermittently disconnected networks.
- Shared, embedded or operational computers that must remain unchanged for long periods.
- Organizations that need local control of update distribution and a documented software baseline.
LTSC is not automatically more secure than Microsoft 365. Its advantage is control and stability. Microsoft 365 provides broader cloud-backed identity, security, compliance, collaboration and management capabilities where those services are usable.
Editions and included applications
Windows suites
Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024 includes Access, Excel, OneNote, Outlook, PowerPoint and Word. Office LTSC Standard 2024 is also available for Windows. These are volume-licensed desktop suites.

Mac deployment
Office LTSC Standard for Mac 2024 supports volume-licensed Mac deployments. Mac and Windows editions should be assessed separately for application coverage and management requirements.
Products that need separate decisions
- Project and Visio: Separate products, not automatic components of an Office LTSC suite.
- Teams: Not preinstalled; download it separately if the environment permits it.
- Publisher: Microsoft’s preview material said Publisher would not ship in the suite, while the current Product Terms list a Publisher LTSC 2024 product entry. Confirm availability against the exact agreement and edition before procurement.
Check the Microsoft Product Terms and your licensing agreement rather than relying on a retail product description.
What is new in LTSC 2024?
Microsoft describes LTSC 2024 as a locked-in-time selection of improvements added to Microsoft 365 Apps over roughly the preceding three years, not a wholesale redesign.
Excel
- Dynamic charts can reference dynamic arrays and update as the array changes.
- Fourteen new text and array functions are included in the release.
- The
IMAGEfunction inserts images into workbooks. - Performance, stability and accessibility are improved.
Outlook
- Search is improved across messages, attachments, contacts and calendar entries.
- Meeting creation includes options such as automatically shortening meetings to create breaks.
- Accessibility controls are consolidated in the Accessibility Ribbon.
- Email reactions are available in Outlook LTSC 2024 for supported cloud-based accounts; Microsoft says the feature is not available in consumer Office 2024.
Word and PowerPoint
- Word can recover a session and reopen documents after an unexpected shutdown.
- PowerPoint adds Cameo for a live camera feed, Recording Studio for voice, ink and video, embedded Microsoft Stream video, and closed captions for video and audio.
- Both applications receive accessibility improvements.
Cross-suite changes
- A new default Office theme.
- OpenDocument Format 1.4 support in Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Improved inking and Draw-tab features in OneNote LTSC 2024.
- ActiveX controls are disabled by default; administrators must explicitly address the policy for legacy workflows that require them.

Microsoft 365 Apps and LTSC can be assigned to different machines in the same organization. That does not guarantee that both suites can be installed on one computer without conflicts involving Click-to-Run components, update channels, licensing or add-ins; test any same-device design.
System requirements
Windows
- 1.1 GHz or faster, two-core processor.
- 4 GB RAM and 4 GB available disk space.
- 1280 × 768 minimum display resolution.
- 64-bit Office is required for 4K and higher resolutions.
- Supported systems include Windows 11, Windows 11 LTSC 2024, Windows 10 LTSC 2021, Windows 10 LTSC 2019, Windows Server 2025 and Windows Server 2022.
- Windows 11 is required on ARM-based devices.
Microsoft documents support for both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows Office. Do not confuse Office compatibility with Windows support status: ordinary Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025, even though specified Windows 10 LTSC editions can appear in Office requirements.
Mac
- Intel or Apple Silicon processor.
- 4 GB RAM and 10 GB available disk space.
- 1280 × 768 minimum display resolution.
- One of the three most recent major macOS versions.

Licensing, activation and offline operation
Office LTSC 2024 is purchased through commercial volume licensing, not an ordinary retail checkout. Agreements may distinguish per-device licensing, license-only purchases, Software Assurance, government programs, work-at-home rights and platform rights. Product Terms point values help calculate a customer’s licensing level; they are not dollar prices.

LTSC is designed for restricted connectivity, but “offline” does not mean that every activation, license validation or cloud-dependent feature works without connectivity. Build an activation and servicing design for the actual network:
- Fully disconnected networks need an approved volume-activation method and a local update source.
- Intermittently connected devices need scheduled activation, validation and update windows.
- Outlook, Stream, Teams, Exchange Online, SharePoint Online and other integrations can retain separate cloud requirements.
Microsoft documents the LTSC update model, including the PerpetualVL2024 channel. The latest cumulative update includes earlier security and quality fixes.

- Confirm the organization’s commercial licensing entitlement and the exact Standard or Professional Plus edition.
- Inventory Office, Project, Visio, add-ins, macros, ActiveX controls, document templates and line-of-business integrations.
- Decide whether 32-bit or 64-bit Office is appropriate; test VBA declarations, drivers and add-ins before changing architecture.
- Create a pilot group and validate documents, Outlook profiles, authentication, cloud dependencies and accessibility workflows.
- Remove conflicting previous Office installations. Microsoft specifically advises uninstalling earlier versions before deployment; many MSI installations can be removed during installation.
- Build and validate an Office Deployment Tool configuration for Click-to-Run on Windows. Mac deployments use Apple package format.
- Configure KMS, MAK or Active Directory activation as appropriate.
- Set the update source and servicing policy. Isolated networks may need an on-premises content source instead of Microsoft’s Office Content Delivery Network.
- Distribute through Configuration Manager, Group Policy, Intune where applicable, or another approved software-distribution system.
- Document rollback, recovery and future replacement plans before broad rollout.
Existing LTSC 2021 and Office 2019 add-ins are likely to work because the major version remains 16.0, but Microsoft still recommends testing. ActiveX-disabled defaults, macros, COM add-ins, web add-ins and same-device Microsoft 365 scenarios are common failure points. Which product should an organization choose?
Choose LTSC 2024 when
- A regulator, customer or validated process requires a fixed software baseline.
- Devices are isolated, restricted or only intermittently connected.
- Local update control is more important than new features.
- The organization already uses perpetual-style commercial licensing and does not need Microsoft 365 cloud entitlements.
Choose Microsoft 365 Apps when
- Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, Exchange Online or real-time collaboration are central.
- Users need continuous improvements, multi-device access or Copilot and other subscription-dependent AI features.
- Cloud-backed identity, security, compliance and device management are priorities.
- The organization wants to avoid periodic major-version migrations.
Choose retail Office 2024 when
- An individual or small business needs a one-time purchase for a limited number of PCs or Macs.
- Commercial volume licensing and enterprise deployment controls are unnecessary.
For a finance or procurement team, the practical next step is to compare the organization’s licensing agreement and service requirements with Microsoft’s official terms, then request a quote from an authorized licensing partner. There is no universal public retail price for LTSC; cost depends on program, agreement, quantity, Software Assurance, customer type and region.
