It is not a replacement for Microsoft 365 if you need multiple devices, OneDrive storage, family sharing, or continuous feature updates.
The retailer calls it a “lifetime” purchase. In practical terms, that means a perpetual license for the Office 2024 release—not free upgrades to every future Office version and not lifetime access to Microsoft 365 services.
What the $129.97 Office deal includes
The PCWorld Shop promotion lists Office Home 2024 for Mac or PC at $129.97, reduced from a stated regular price of $149.99. The package includes:

- Microsoft PowerPoint
- Microsoft OneNote
The promotion is a one-time purchase, and you select the platform you need. Microsoft’s comparison materials describe Office Home 2024 as licensed for one PC or Mac, so do not assume one purchase covers both a Windows desktop and a MacBook. Check the platform, redemption method, taxes, and license terms at checkout because the retailer’s price and availability can change.

When does the one-time price break even?
Using the prices cited above, the arithmetic is straightforward:
- $129.97 deal versus Microsoft 365 Personal: about 1.30 years, or roughly 16 months, of Personal.
- $179.99 Microsoft Office Home 2024 listing versus Personal: about 1.80 years, or roughly 22 months.
- $129.97 deal versus Microsoft 365 Family: approximately one year of Family.
- $179.99 direct price versus Family: about 1.38 years.
Those are price-only calculations. They do not assign a dollar value to OneDrive storage, several-device access, family sharing, feature updates, taxes, changing promotions, or the cost of buying a later Office version. The deal becomes financially compelling when you expect to keep using one computer and the Office 2024 feature set for at least two years. Microsoft 365 Family can be the better household bargain even though it renews annually if two or more people need Office.

What “lifetime license” really means
“Lifetime” is retailer marketing shorthand, not a promise that Microsoft will provide every future release forever. The safer interpretation is a perpetual license for the purchased Office 2024 version, subject to Microsoft’s license, activation, operating-system, and compatibility terms.
- You pay once instead of renewing annually.
- You should not expect a free Office 2027 (or later) upgrade.
- You do not receive Microsoft 365’s included OneDrive storage, family sharing, or subscription services.
- Security, bug, and compatibility updates for the released version are different from the continual feature expansion of Microsoft 365.
- Future operating-system changes, account requirements, or licensing rules can still affect activation and use.

Who should buy Office Home 2024?
Strong fit
- A single user with one main Windows PC or Mac.
- Someone who mainly needs the four included desktop apps.
- A student, retiree, home user, or light office user who dislikes subscriptions.
- A buyer with local storage who does not need 1 TB of OneDrive.
- Someone willing to stay on Office 2024 and keep the same computer for several years.
Weak fit
- Families in which two or more people need Office.
- Anyone regularly switching among a desktop, laptop, tablet, and phone.
- Users who depend on OneDrive backup and synchronized storage.
- People who want new Office features as Microsoft releases them.
- Users who rely on current Copilot or other subscription-linked capabilities.
- Businesses needing administration, compliance, or clearly appropriate commercial licensing.
Important licensing and activation checks
- Confirm the edition and platform. Make sure the checkout says Office Home 2024 and matches your Mac or PC. One purchase should not be assumed to install on both.
- Confirm redemption and account requirements. Expect activation through a Microsoft account, but verify whether the retailer supplies a Microsoft redemption code or another mechanism.
- Check transfer language. Read the current terms for moving the license if you replace the computer.
- Check usage rights. Home editions may not be the right choice for paid freelance, employer, or client work. Commercial users should review the license or consider Office Home & Business 2024 or a business Microsoft 365 plan.
- Test before cancelling Microsoft 365. Install and activate Office 2024 first. Cancelling Microsoft 365 can change OneDrive storage limits and remove subscription benefits; buying Office 2024 does not itself cancel an existing subscription.

Free web apps or LibreOffice
Microsoft’s free web versions can handle basic documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, but they are not the full offline desktop apps. LibreOffice removes subscription costs, while complex Office formatting, macros, and collaboration can differ. Both are better viewed as budget alternatives than feature-equivalent replacements.
Verdict
Buy the $129.97 Office Home 2024 deal if you want Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote on one computer, dislike recurring payments, and expect to use that computer for at least two years. Choose Microsoft 365 instead if cloud storage, multiple devices, family sharing, business controls, or continuous feature updates matter more than avoiding an annual bill.
