Microsoft Offers a One-Month Copilot Trial—But It’s a Microsoft 365 Subscription

Microsoft offers one-month trials of Microsoft 365 plans that include Copilot. Learn what the US plans cost after the trial, who gets the AI benefits, and how to cancel before renewal.

Yes, Microsoft offers a one-month free trial that includes Copilot, but its current consumer offer is a trial of Microsoft 365—not necessarily a standalone Copilot Pro subscription. In the US, Microsoft advertises trials of Microsoft 365 Personal and Microsoft 365 Premium, with Copilot included. The subscription renews automatically unless canceled, so check the price and billing date shown for your account before signing up.

Is Microsoft offering a Copilot Pro trial?

“Copilot Pro” is a recognizable Microsoft product name, and Microsoft still has support documentation for existing Copilot Pro subscriptions. But Microsoft’s current consumer trial page presents the offer as Microsoft 365 Personal or Microsoft 365 Premium with Copilot included. Unless checkout explicitly names Copilot Pro, treat it as a Microsoft 365 trial rather than a separate Copilot Pro-only trial. Microsoft also distinguishes the free Copilot experience from Copilot features included in Microsoft 365 subscriptions; see its explanation of Copilot experiences.

What the consumer trial includes

The Microsoft 365 subscription trial is aimed at people who want Copilot alongside Microsoft productivity apps, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote. It also includes Microsoft 365 subscription benefits such as OneDrive storage. App and feature availability can vary by device, language, market, and plan.

Important feature limits

  • Copilot in Excel requires AutoSave to be enabled and the file to be saved in OneDrive; it does not work with an unsaved file.
  • Some AI features have usage limits or use AI credits. Microsoft says limits vary by plan and feature and may change; see its AI credits and limits guide.
  • On Family and Premium plans, the AI benefits are for the subscription owner, not every person with whom other plan benefits are shared.

Which Microsoft 365 plan might suit you?

These are prices displayed on Microsoft’s US trial page; prices and offers can differ by location and account. The checkout page is the authority for your renewal terms.

Plan US price shown Who it may suit Copilot access
Microsoft 365 Personal $9.99/month One person who wants Microsoft 365 apps and 1 TB of OneDrive storage. Included for the subscription owner.
Microsoft 365 Family $12.99/month A household that wants shared Microsoft 365 benefits. AI benefits are limited to the subscription owner, not all family members.
Microsoft 365 Premium $19.99/month shown; the trial page says it renews at $199.99 per year unless canceled. A heavier Microsoft 365 user seeking more extensive AI allowances and the wider subscription bundle. Included for the subscription owner; AI use is still subject to feature-specific limits.

The listed monthly price and the Premium annual renewal figure are not interchangeable billing promises: review the precise interval, amount, and renewal date presented at checkout. Microsoft does not guarantee that every account or region will see the same trial.

How to start the one-month trial

  1. Open Microsoft’s Try Copilot for Individuals page.
  2. Choose the one-month trial for the Microsoft 365 plan you want, if it is offered for your account.
  3. Sign in with a Microsoft account or create one.
  4. Before confirming, check the renewal date, billing interval, and post-trial price shown for your account. Save those details somewhere you can find them.
  5. Provide a payment method if Microsoft requests one, then complete signup.
  6. Use the same Microsoft account in Microsoft 365 apps or the Copilot experience to access the included features.

If the trial button is missing, the offer may not be available in your market or for your account; you may already have a qualifying subscription, have used a prior trial, or be using an organization-managed account. Do not assume eligibility from a headline—rely on the offer shown after signing in.

How to cancel before the trial renews

  1. Go to account.microsoft.com/services and sign in with the account used for the trial.
  2. Find the Microsoft 365 subscription and select Cancel if that option appears. Complete the cancellation steps shown.
  3. If the page says Expires on and has no Cancel link, the subscription is already set not to renew. If it says Turn on recurring billing, recurring billing is off.

Microsoft says its free Microsoft 365 trial can be canceled within 30 days of signup without a charge. Record your displayed renewal or expiration date and cancel well before it rather than relying on a last-minute reminder. See Microsoft’s free-trial cancellation instructions.

What changes when the trial ends?

If the subscription ends, Microsoft says the desktop Office apps may eventually become view-only: you can open and print documents, but may lose the ability to edit or create them in those apps. Extra OneDrive storage and other subscription services also end. Free web versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote remain available through Office.com.

What if you are charged after canceling?

First check the subscription status and the account that was used to sign up. Turning off recurring billing prevents a future renewal; canceling follows the cancellation flow, while a refund is a separate request subject to Microsoft’s terms. Refund eligibility depends on factors including country, purchase channel, timing, and subscription type. Microsoft’s refund policy lists a generally applicable 14-day window in the United States and many other regions for Copilot Pro and Microsoft 365 Premium, subject to applicable terms and eligibility assessment. If you bought through Apple’s App Store or Google Play, cancellation or refund generally needs to go through that store.

Who should try it—and who may not need it?

It may be worth trying if

  • You already work regularly in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Outlook and want AI features inside those apps.
  • You also need Microsoft 365 desktop apps or OneDrive storage, making the bundle useful beyond the AI features.
  • You are comfortable tracking the renewal terms and understand that some AI features have limits.

Consider skipping it if

  • You only want a general-purpose chatbot and do not need the Office apps or subscription storage. Microsoft offers free Copilot through copilot.com, its Copilot apps, and Microsoft Edge.
  • You do not want to monitor an automatically renewing subscription or provide payment information if requested.
  • You expect every member of a Family plan to get their own Copilot benefits, or you need unlimited use of every AI feature.
  • Your spreadsheet workflows depend on files that are not saved in OneDrive and you do not want to change that workflow.

A separate 30-day Copilot trial for some businesses

Microsoft’s Tech Community announcement says a free 30-day Microsoft 365 Copilot Premium trial is rolling out starting in July 2026 for eligible small and medium-sized organizations with up to 300 users. The announcement says users can start it from Copilot Chat, no payment information is required, and an administrator can disable the trial-start capability, which is enabled by default. Because this is a rollout, availability is not guaranteed for every organization. It is a business offer, not the consumer Microsoft 365 Premium trial described above. See Microsoft’s announcement.

For administrators, the trial’s ability to connect Copilot to organizational email, documents, calendars, and other Microsoft 365 content makes permissions and governance important. Consider testing with a controlled group, reviewing data access and internal AI-use guidance, and confirming tenant eligibility before enabling it. Microsoft’s licensing documentation describes Microsoft 365 Copilot as an add-on with eligible Microsoft 365 licensing prerequisites.
