Microsoft launched its 2023 Xbox Spring Sale on April 7, but the promotion ended on April 20, 2023. It is therefore a historical deal event, not a live offer in 2026. The sale covered selected Xbox and PC games, downloadable content, controllers, consoles, movies, television, apps and Surface hardware. Microsoft advertised savings of up to 60% on select Xbox digital games; contemporaneous coverage from Thurrott described discounts as high as 67% across roughly 700 Xbox games and DLC items.
What the Xbox Spring Sale was
The headline referred to a broader Microsoft Store Spring Sale rather than a console-only event. Microsoft’s announcement, published April 7, 2023, grouped Xbox digital games with PC games, entertainment, apps, Xbox hardware, accessories and Surface devices. Offers, prices and participating markets varied, so “up to” figures described the maximum discount on selected products—not the typical saving across the catalog.

Game discounts and featured titles
Microsoft’s official wording was “save up to 60% on select Xbox digital games.” Thurrott reported up to 67% off approximately 700 Xbox digital games and DLC. Those are different descriptions, so neither should be presented as the discount every buyer received.

Featured examples included:
- Destiny 2: Lightfall
- Dead Space (the remake)
- The Witcher 3
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II
- NBA 2K23
- One Piece Odyssey Deluxe Edition
- Forza Horizon 5 Premium Edition
These were examples, not a complete catalog, and the original article did not establish that every edition or platform version was discounted.
The Forza DLC calculation
Thurrott reported that the Forza Horizon 5 Premium Add-ons Bundle was $20 off and included the Rally Adventure expansion and the earlier Hot Wheels DLC. That distinction mattered to Game Pass subscribers: the base game was available through Game Pass at the time, while the add-on bundle supplied downloadable content separately. A subscriber could compare the cost of the bundle with the price of a complete edition rather than paying twice for a base game they already accessed.

How Game Pass changed the value decision
Game Pass provides access to a changing catalog across console, PC and cloud; it is not the same as owning a permanent digital license. Before buying a title from an old sale list, check the current catalog at Xbox Game Pass and compare:
- Whether the exact game and edition are included in your current plan.
- Whether you want permanent ownership if the game leaves the catalog.
- Whether the discount is for DLC or an upgrade that requires a separately owned or subscribed base game.
- Whether your purchase should work on Xbox, Windows PC or both; Xbox Play Anywhere support is title-specific.
Game Pass availability changes, so inclusion in 2023 cannot be assumed today. Digital purchases are tied to the purchasing Microsoft account and remain subject to licensing, regional storefront and backward-compatibility rules.

Consoles and controller offers
The sale also promoted Xbox Series X bundles, including the Forza Horizon 5 Premium Edition bundle and a Diablo 4 bundle listed as a preorder at the time.
| Product category | 2023 offer description | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox controllers | $10 off select controllers in Microsoft’s announcement | Thurrott reported discounts reaching $20 on some models, including black and white Xbox Elite Series 2 controllers |
| Xbox Series X bundles | Forza Horizon 5 Premium Edition and Diablo 4 bundles promoted | Specific prices and availability varied by market and date |
Because the official and secondary controller figures differed, the safest reading is that Microsoft guaranteed $10 savings on selected models while some individual listings may have reached $20 off.

The wider Microsoft Store promotion
PC games
Microsoft said hundreds of selected PC games were included, with savings of up to 60%. Examples named in the announcement were Jurassic World Evolution 2, Disney Dreamlight Valley and Roblox. An Xbox purchase does not automatically include a Windows copy unless the title’s entitlement specifically supports it.
Movies, television and apps
Selected movies and TV shows were advertised at up to 50% off. Examples included Harry Potter: The Complete 8-Film Collection, Deadpool 2 – Movie Collection, Joker/The Batman 2 – Film Collection, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City and Jordan Peele 3 – Movie Collection. Selected creativity, productivity and entertainment apps were also advertised at up to 50% off, including Dolby Access, Nitrado, Karaoke One, 8 Zip Pro Advanced Archiver and Adobe Photoshop Elements 2023.
Surface devices and accessories
The announcement listed discounts of up to $300 on select Surface Laptop 5 and Surface Pro 9 units, up to $500 on select Surface Pro 8 and Surface Laptop 4 units, and up to 33% off selected Microsoft PC accessories. These hardware deadlines did not all match the April 20 main sale closing date.
Buyer checklist for any comparable sale
- Check the date: confirm that the listing is live and note any product-specific end time.
- Check the region: Microsoft warned that markets, prices, taxes, shipping and availability could vary.
- Check the edition: Standard, Deluxe, Premium and Ultimate versions can contain different DLC and upgrade rights.
- Check what you already own: a bundle may repeat DLC or a base game in your library.
- Check the platform: verify Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC and Play Anywhere entitlements separately.
- Check Game Pass first: buying DLC can be more economical than buying a complete game when the base game is included in your plan.
- Read “up to” carefully: the maximum percentage does not describe every item.
What this means for shoppers in 2026
The 2023 Xbox Spring Sale was substantial, but its discounts and deadlines are archived. Do not use the named games, controller savings or Surface figures as current prices, and do not assume that a title remains in Game Pass. Start with Microsoft’s current Microsoft Store deals, the Xbox sales page or the Xbox accessories page, then verify the exact product, account entitlement and region before paying.
