Microsoft hired DeepMind and Inflection co-founder Mustafa Suleyman on March 19, 2024, naming him executive vice president and CEO of a new organization, Microsoft AI. The unit was initially focused on Copilot and other consumer AI products and research. The move was not a conventional purchase of Inflection AI: Microsoft hired Suleyman, Inflection co-founder Karén Simonyan and other employees, alongside related agreements with the startup. By March 2026, Suleyman’s focus had shifted toward frontier models while a different executive led the Copilot experience.
What Microsoft announced in March 2024
On March 19, 2024, Microsoft said Suleyman would join as executive vice president and CEO of Microsoft AI, report directly to CEO Satya Nadella, and join the company’s senior leadership team. Karén Simonyan, Inflection’s co-founder and chief scientist, joined as chief scientist of Microsoft AI; Microsoft also said several Inflection employees would join. The organization’s stated mission was to advance Copilot and Microsoft’s other consumer AI products and research. Microsoft’s announcement described a new organization, not a claim that Suleyman would oversee every AI effort across the company.
Who is Mustafa Suleyman?
Suleyman co-founded DeepMind with Demis Hassabis and Shane Legg. Google acquired DeepMind in 2014. Suleyman later co-founded Inflection AI with Reid Hoffman and served as its CEO. Inflection developed Pi, a consumer-facing AI assistant, giving Suleyman experience in turning AI systems into products for everyday users as well as in building research teams. The Guardian’s account of his background also notes his public work on AI safety and governance. Calling him the sole founder of DeepMind would be inaccurate.
What Microsoft AI initially covered
The 2024 announcement positioned Microsoft AI around consumer products, Copilot and related research, combining science, engineering, product and design work. It did not publish a complete organizational chart. The Associated Press report described a broader consumer remit that included products such as Bing and Edge; that reporting should not be mistaken for an exhaustive, permanent list of teams under Suleyman.

Was Inflection AI acquired?
Not in the ordinary sense of Microsoft buying the entire company. The UK Competition and Markets Authority examined the March 2024 arrangement as a transaction involving Microsoft and Inflection. Its full-text decision describes offers of employment to Inflection staff, a non-exclusive intellectual-property license, a waiver and release agreement, an amended line of credit and a transition-services agreement. That supports describing the move as an acqui-hire-style talent-and-technology transaction, rather than an outright acquisition of Inflection or ownership of all its intellectual property.
The same CMA decision says Inflection appointed Sean White as CEO on March 19, 2024, and shifted toward business-to-business work while continuing to operate Pi. The decision redacts financial and other details, so it does not establish a reliable public total for the consideration or a precise employee count. Microsoft’s public description was that “several” Inflection team members joined.

Why the hire mattered to Microsoft
The appointment brought together experience in frontier AI research, consumer assistant development and building specialized teams. That combination was strategically relevant as Microsoft worked to turn its AI infrastructure and partnerships into products, rather than treating model development as an isolated research effort. Suleyman’s leadership gave the consumer-AI effort a high-profile executive with a track record spanning DeepMind and Inflection.
The hire did not mean Microsoft was replacing OpenAI. In its announcement, Microsoft said it would continue building on its strategic partnership with OpenAI while investing in infrastructure, custom systems, silicon and products. The company presented the new organization and the partnership as parts of its broader AI work, not as alternatives.

How Suleyman’s remit changed by 2026
Microsoft’s March 17, 2026, leadership update said Suleyman remained executive vice president and CEO of Microsoft AI but would focus on frontier models and the company’s superintelligence effort. The company also unified its Copilot work across the Copilot experience, Copilot platform, Microsoft 365 apps and AI models. Jacob Andreou became executive vice president of Copilot, responsible for the Copilot experience across consumer and commercial products. Microsoft’s 2026 update makes clear that Suleyman’s original consumer-AI role should not be read as him personally leading every Copilot product team today.
