Yes—Microsoft 365 Copilot now supports Anthropic’s Claude in selected experiences, but it is not a universal switch that replaces OpenAI everywhere. Microsoft first announced Claude on September 24, 2025, for the Researcher agent and Copilot Studio. Later documentation added supported Word, Excel and PowerPoint scenarios for customers in the European Union, European Free Trade Association and United Kingdom. Availability still depends on your license, tenant, app, administrator settings, rollout channel and region.
The short answer
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Can Microsoft 365 Copilot use Claude? | Yes, in supported Copilot experiences. |
| Is Claude available in every Copilot chat or app? | No. Microsoft has not promised a universal model selector across every Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, mobile or consumer experience. |
| Does Claude replace OpenAI? | No. OpenAI models remain available; Microsoft is adding model choice. |
| Do you need a separate Claude subscription? | Not necessarily for supported Microsoft 365 Copilot features, although standalone Claude products remain separate. |
| Is the full Microsoft 365 Copilot product free? | No. Microsoft lists a paid Copilot license, while Copilot Chat may be included for eligible users. |
| Can an administrator block Claude? | Microsoft documents tenant-level controls for Anthropic model access. |
The practical interpretation is that Microsoft is becoming a model-selection and orchestration layer. It controls where Claude appears, how it is connected to Microsoft 365 data and which users can use it.
What Microsoft announced on September 24, 2025
Microsoft’s announcement added Claude Opus 4.1 to the Researcher agent and made Claude Sonnet 4 and Claude Opus 4.1 available in Copilot Studio. OpenAI models continued to be part of Microsoft 365 Copilot. Microsoft described the move as expanded model choice, not a break with OpenAI.
Anthropic’s announcement likewise described the initial integration as an enterprise rollout through Researcher and Copilot Studio. The original announcement therefore did not establish that every Microsoft 365 user could manually choose Claude for every prompt in every Office application.

Where Claude can appear
Researcher
Researcher is the clearest documented end-user route. Microsoft Support says a user needs a Microsoft 365 Copilot license and the Microsoft 365 Copilot desktop or web app. The documented path is:
- Open the Microsoft 365 Copilot app on the web or desktop.
- Select Agents.
- Choose Researcher.
- Open the model-choice or Model Council controls when they are shown.
- Select an available Claude option.
That menu is not guaranteed for every account. A missing control can reflect licensing, rollout timing, region, administrator policy or use of an unsupported app. Microsoft’s instructions are available at Use Model Council with Researcher.
Copilot Studio
Copilot Studio is aimed at developers, solution architects and administrators. It lets an organization select supported Claude models when building or customizing enterprise agents. This is different from giving every employee a Claude button in ordinary Copilot Chat: the model choice is part of the agent design and tenant governance.

Microsoft Learn documents Anthropic-model support for generating or refining content in supported Microsoft 365 apps, with administrator configuration and specific availability described for customers in the EU, EFTA and UK. That documentation is not evidence of identical worldwide availability. Check the current tenant controls and regional terms before promising users access.

Copilot Chat and other surfaces
Copilot Chat, the Microsoft 365 Copilot app, Outlook, Teams, mobile clients and early-release or Frontier environments can have different model support. The presence of Copilot Chat does not by itself prove that Researcher’s model selector or Claude in Office apps is enabled. Microsoft’s later rollout posts, including announcements about newer Claude models, should be read as availability evidence for particular channels rather than a universal production guarantee.
Which Claude models are involved?
The September 2025 launch named Claude Sonnet 4 and Claude Opus 4.1. Those names describe the initial lineup, not a permanent list. Microsoft’s subsequent rollout communications have referred to newer Anthropic models in selected Copilot environments and early-release channels. Model names, defaults and supported surfaces can change, so administrators should verify the current picker instead of relying on the 2025 announcement.

- License assignment: Researcher’s documented model-choice feature requires a Microsoft 365 Copilot license. Copilot Chat access is a different entitlement.
- Region and release channel: Regional documentation and preview rings can produce different results for otherwise similar tenants.
- Anthropic access: Microsoft documents an administrator control in the Microsoft 365 admin center for enabling Anthropic models.
- Data-processing terms: Review Microsoft’s product terms, data-processing addendum, subprocessor information, residency commitments and retention requirements.
- User disclosure: Microsoft says indicators identify when Claude models are being used. Confirm the current interface and train users to recognize it.
- Monitoring: Decide how model routing, prompts, outputs, audit events and incidents will be reviewed.
- Agent economics: Copilot Studio can involve separate capacity, credit, pay-as-you-go or Azure-related charges.
Microsoft’s subprocessor documentation is at Anthropic as a subprocessor for Microsoft Online Services. Microsoft also says the Anthropic independent-processor setting was decommissioned on May 1, 2026. That change illustrates why compliance teams should check the current terms rather than rely on an old deployment decision.
Does using Claude leave Microsoft’s security boundary?
Not necessarily, but “Microsoft security” is not a complete answer to every regulatory question. Microsoft remains the service interface, identity and policy layer in the documented integration; Anthropic supplies the underlying model for applicable experiences as a Microsoft subprocessor. The exact data flow, residency commitments, retention rules and permitted data categories depend on the relevant Microsoft terms and tenant configuration.
Rank #3
For confidential, financial, health, legal or government information, have the compliance team confirm:
- Which data can be sent to the Anthropic subprocessor.
- Where processing and support may occur.
- How prompts and outputs are retained and audited.
- Whether regional or sector-specific requirements are met.
- How users can identify and report model-specific incidents.
Do not equate an enterprise license with identical data-boundary treatment for every model or country.
Claude inside Copilot is not Claude.ai
A Claude response generated in Microsoft 365 Copilot may differ materially from a response in Anthropic’s standalone product. Microsoft can add its own system prompts, retrieval and grounding, content filters, permissions, tools, context handling, rate limits, logging and retention. An answer may be influenced by Microsoft 365 files or Graph-connected data that Claude.ai would not see.
Consequently, a Microsoft 365 Copilot result is not an apples-to-apples benchmark of Anthropic’s direct service. It also does not automatically include every Claude-native feature, context limit, priority entitlement or API capability. Anthropic lists separate products and plans at its pricing page.
What model choice is useful for
Microsoft is not claiming that Claude is categorically better than OpenAI. The value is operational:
- Users can choose a model that fits a particular research, drafting, reasoning or agent task when the experience exposes that choice.
- Organizations can reduce dependence on a single model supplier without creating a separate identity and data-integration stack.
- Developers can use Anthropic models through Copilot Studio rather than building a direct Claude API integration for every workflow.
- Administrators can keep model access under Microsoft identity, permissions and governance.
Choice also creates complexity. Different models can produce different wording, citations, tool behavior and edge-case decisions. Teams that need reproducible outputs may prefer a centrally selected default and documented routing rules rather than unrestricted employee-by-employee selection.

Pricing: what is and is not included
Microsoft 365 Copilot
Microsoft’s U.S. enterprise pricing page lists Microsoft 365 Copilot at $30 per user per month, paid yearly. A qualifying Microsoft 365 plan is required. That is a marketing price for the U.S. page; country, currency, contract and commercial agreement can change the amount. The page does not list Claude as a separately itemized add-on to the Microsoft 365 Copilot license.
See Microsoft’s enterprise pricing page.
Copilot Chat
Microsoft lists Copilot Chat at no additional cost for eligible Microsoft Entra users with qualifying Microsoft 365 subscriptions. Copilot Chat is not equivalent to the paid Microsoft 365 Copilot license: app integration, grounding, agents, limits and model-choice features can differ.
Copilot Studio agents
Copilot Studio licensing can involve Microsoft 365 Copilot-associated rights, pay-as-you-go billing, credit packs or prepaid capacity. An agent that uses Claude is not automatically unlimited because a user has a Microsoft 365 Copilot license. Review the June 2026 Copilot Studio licensing guide for the applicable scenario.

Strong fit
- Your organization already relies on Microsoft 365, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams and Office.
- Identity, permissions, auditability and centralized administration matter more than a standalone chatbot interface.
- You want model diversity without separate user accounts and data connectors.
- You are building agents around Microsoft data and workflows.
Standalone Claude may be better when
- Users need Claude-native features or direct Anthropic account management.
- Developers need Anthropic’s API and full application-level control.
- You do not have a qualifying Microsoft 365 commercial environment.
- You want to compare model behavior without Microsoft retrieval, prompting and policy layers.
Another provider may be better when
- Your main workflow is Google Workspace or another non-Microsoft ecosystem.
- You already have a strong ChatGPT or Gemini contract and native tools meet your needs.
- You want a general AI workspace rather than Office-embedded assistance.
Common problems and fixes
The Claude option does not appear
Check the user’s Microsoft 365 Copilot license, tenant region, release channel, administrator setting and supported app. The feature may exist only in Researcher, Copilot Studio or a particular preview environment. Standard Copilot Chat access alone is not proof that Claude is enabled.

Researcher appears but Model Council does not
- Confirm the user has the paid Microsoft 365 Copilot license.
- Use the Microsoft 365 Copilot desktop or web app, not an unsupported client.
- Ask the administrator whether the tenant has received and enabled the feature.
- Check regional and compliance restrictions.
- Confirm that the user is in Researcher rather than ordinary Copilot Chat.
Claude’s answer differs from Claude.ai
That is expected to be possible because Microsoft’s orchestration, grounding, system prompts, filters and tools differ. Test the complete Microsoft implementation you intend to deploy, not a separate Claude subscription.
Costs rise after an agent rollout
Review agent consumption, capacity, credit packs, pay-as-you-go settings and any Azure requirement. Treat the base Copilot license and custom-agent consumption as separate budget lines.
Why this matters strategically
Microsoft’s competitive asset is no longer only the model behind Copilot. It is the combination of Microsoft 365 data access, identity and permissions, enterprise controls, agent tooling, model routing and integration with productivity applications. Keeping OpenAI models while adding Anthropic options lets Microsoft compete on orchestration and governance as well as model quality.
For buyers, however, “multi-model” does not mean unrestricted model access. The business decision still turns on the exact app, license, geography, rollout channel, administrator policy, data-processing terms and cost model.
