Microsoft and NVIDIA have not announced one merged, universally available accelerator. On June 25, 2025, Microsoft announced Catalysts: AI-powered breakthroughs with Microsoft Azure and NVIDIA, a showcase and ecosystem initiative featuring startups that belonged to both Microsoft for Startups and NVIDIA Inception. The practical proposition combines Azure cloud and enterprise distribution with NVIDIA’s accelerated-computing software, training and partner ecosystem.
Founders can generally apply to the two underlying programs separately. Neither membership guarantees investment, customers, unlimited GPUs or a fixed combined credit package.
What was actually announced?
Microsoft’s June 25, 2025 announcement described Catalysts as a series following three startups using Azure and NVIDIA technologies in science, healthcare and technology. Pangaea Data was identified as one featured company; Microsoft says it uses AI to help identify untreated and under-treated patients, including people with difficult-to-diagnose conditions.
The announcement describes companies that were members of both existing programs. It does not establish a replacement program, automatic dual enrollment, a universal joint application or a guaranteed package of credits and hardware. A separate UK-focused initiative covered by ITPro should be treated as related but distinct from Catalysts.

What Microsoft contributes
Microsoft’s side is the cloud and enterprise platform. Accepted startups may receive Azure credits, Azure AI capabilities, model access through Microsoft Foundry, storage, networking, security and deployment services. Microsoft also offers technical guidance and a route to commercial distribution through Marketplace and, where a company qualifies, co-sell resources.
Current Microsoft documentation says credits can reach up to $150,000 over time. Startups backed by an eligible Microsoft for Startups Investor Network partner may be able to unlock up to $200,000. Microsoft’s public startup page separately advertises up to $5,000 for some startups without Investor Network affiliation. These are conditional maximums, not cash payments or automatic awards. Confirm the offer, remaining balance, eligible services and expiry date in the applicant’s account.

What NVIDIA contributes
NVIDIA Inception is designed to help AI companies move from prototype to production. Its stated benefits include NVIDIA developer tools, SDKs, model libraries, self-paced technical training, forums, selected hardware and software pricing, partner offers and potential cloud credits. Members may also receive event, branding and ecosystem exposure, with investor introductions available through relevant NVIDIA networks; that is not the same as a promise of investment.

NVIDIA says a startup does not need to be using NVIDIA GPUs or SDKs before applying. The public Inception page says membership is free and has no equity requirement. Benefits are requested or offered through the member ecosystem, so availability can differ by company, geography, partner and product.
What “accelerate” means in practice
Lower early infrastructure spending
Azure sponsorship credits and partner cloud offers can reduce the cost of initial experiments. They do not necessarily cover every GPU family, marketplace purchase, support plan, data-transfer charge, third-party model or quota-related expense.

- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4. System Requirements: Minimum 850W PSU with 16-pin 12V-2x6 (12VHPWR) connector required. Verify before purchasing.
- Military-grade components deliver rock-solid power and longer lifespan for ultimate durability. Compatibility: 348mm (13.7") length, 3.6 slots, 4.3 lbs. Confirm case clearance and slot spacing. GPU bracket included.
- Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
- 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
Faster experimentation and optimization
Azure supplies a path from development to deployment, while NVIDIA libraries, SDKs and training can help teams use accelerated computing and improve model performance. The relevant GPU may still be unavailable in a preferred region or subject to quota.
Production operations
Azure provides managed infrastructure, identity, security, monitoring and data services. NVIDIA adds software and technical resources for inference and accelerated workloads. Founders should benchmark the full production stack rather than assuming a prototype’s subsidized cost will continue.
Distribution and visibility
Microsoft Marketplace and potential co-sell can help a qualified startup reach Microsoft customers. NVIDIA events, partner relationships and investor networks can increase exposure. Neither channel guarantees a contract, referral or financing.

Who can apply?
Microsoft for Startups
According to Microsoft’s current eligibility guidance, an applicant generally must:
- Develop a software product or service owned by the company.
- Be privately held and for-profit.
- Be headquartered where Azure is available.
- Have received no more than $350,000 in lifetime free Azure credits.
- Not have raised Series C or later.
- Not be an educational institution, government organization, consultancy or agency.
- Not be involved in cryptocurrency mining.
Microsoft says applications are typically reviewed within three business days. That is a stated typical timeframe, not a guaranteed service-level agreement.
NVIDIA Inception
NVIDIA’s public criteria include at least one developer, a working company website, official incorporation and an age of less than 10 years. Funding stage is not a prerequisite, and prior NVIDIA GPU use is not required. Apply through the Inception page and keep the company profile current after acceptance.

How to join both programs
Microsoft pathway
- Apply through the Microsoft for Startups website with company and product details.
- Provide a Microsoft Investor Network referral code if applicable.
- Create or link an Azure account.
- Activate the Azure sponsorship and review eligible services and expiry terms.
- Track credit usage in the Azure portal and request technical or go-to-market support when eligible.
Microsoft says activation differs for startups that joined before May 29, 2026 and those joining on or after that date. New applicants should follow the current Azure activation instructions.
NVIDIA pathway
- Submit the Inception application with company, website, product and technical information.
- Wait for NVIDIA’s review.
- Open the member portal after acceptance.
- Review and request relevant cloud, training, hardware, software and ecosystem offers.
Joining one program does not automatically enroll a company in the other.
Limitations founders should model before applying
- Credits are restricted subsidies: read the sponsorship’s eligible-service list and expiry rules before designing around it. Once credits end, standard Azure consumption pricing applies; see Azure pricing.
- GPU supply is not guaranteed: regional capacity, quota and pricing can make a credit-funded GPU unavailable or uneconomic.
- Benefits change: Microsoft’s May 29, 2026 activation transition shows why older Founders Hub articles and historic credit tiers may be obsolete.
- Portability has a cost: assess container and Kubernetes compatibility, model-serving portability, data egress, identity, logging, data residency and the need for a second cloud.
- Post-credit economics matter: include inference, storage, observability, networking and support in the unit-cost model.
Should your startup apply?
Both programs are a strong fit when
- You are building a product-based AI company with meaningful training, inference or GPU requirements.
- You can use Azure or are willing to evaluate it as a production platform.
- You want Microsoft’s enterprise distribution as well as infrastructure support.
- You can maintain separate applications, compliance information and program profiles.
Consider a narrower or different route when
- Your workload is mostly CPU-based and NVIDIA tooling adds little value.
- You need a specific GPU that is unavailable in your Azure region.
- You are deliberately multi-cloud and cannot accept Azure-specific dependencies.
- You may not use credits before they expire.
- You are a consultancy, agency or mature company outside Microsoft’s stated criteria.
Alternatives
AWS Activate may fit a company already operating on AWS or selling to AWS-native customers. The Google for Startups Cloud Program is relevant to teams centered on Google Cloud or Vertex AI. Specialist GPU clouds can offer faster access to a particular accelerator, but may not provide Microsoft’s enterprise-sales channel. A startup can also use NVIDIA Inception without Microsoft for Startups, or Microsoft for Startups without Inception, depending on its technical and commercial priorities.
Bottom line
Catalysts is best understood as a Microsoft-led showcase of startups using two complementary ecosystems, not proof of a single merged accelerator. Applying to both programs can reduce early infrastructure costs, improve technical readiness and open potential distribution or investor channels. The decision should rest on confirmed eligibility, actual benefit availability, GPU capacity and the startup’s costs after credits expire.
