Microsoft Expanded LinkedIn CEO Ryan Roslansky’s Role to Include Office and Copilot

Microsoft’s 2025 move added Office and Microsoft 365 Copilot to LinkedIn CEO Ryan Roslansky’s responsibilities. It changed executive oversight—not customer pricing, privacy settings or the products themselves—and later evolved when Dan Shapero became LinkedIn CEO.

On June 4, 2025, Microsoft gave LinkedIn CEO Ryan Roslansky responsibility for Microsoft Office and Microsoft 365 Copilot while he continued running LinkedIn. The move changed management lines—not the products customers use. LinkedIn, Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams and Copilot were not announced as a single merged application, and the announcement did not change pricing, licensing or data permissions.

What Microsoft announced

Roslansky’s own announcement described an expanded remit covering LinkedIn, Microsoft Office and Microsoft 365 Copilot. Contemporary reporting characterized this variously as leading or overseeing Office; those descriptions refer to his added executive responsibility rather than a newly announced consumer product. The announcement followed an internal communication from CEO Satya Nadella, not a product launch. (Roslansky’s June 2025 announcement)

Responsibility in June 2025 Reporting relationship
LinkedIn CEO Reported directly to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella
Office and Microsoft 365 Copilot Reported to Rajesh Jha, then executive vice president of Experiences + Devices

That dual structure matters: Roslansky did not replace Nadella as LinkedIn’s reporting executive, and his Office assignment sat within Jha’s organization. (CNBC’s report)

Microsoft’s later profile for Roslansky also lists Teams among the products in his broader responsibility set. “Office” is therefore best understood as shorthand for a changing Microsoft 365 productivity portfolio, not a single standalone app. The reorganization did not mean every Microsoft business application moved to the same executive. Reporting also placed business and industry Copilot teams, Power Platform, Dynamics 365 and Copilot Studio under Jha. (Neowin’s June 2025 coverage)

Why Microsoft connected these businesses

Copilot and AI strategy

Microsoft 365 Copilot was explicitly part of Roslansky’s new remit. That puts AI-powered work assistance at the center of the change rather than treating it as an add-on to legacy Office applications.

Productivity and professional identity

LinkedIn represents professional identity, recruiting, learning and career relationships; Office, Outlook and Teams sit inside daily work. A single executive could coordinate strategy across those adjacent experiences as AI changes how people communicate, create documents and develop careers.

Organizational simplification

The move also fit a broader restructuring that grouped productivity and business applications more closely under Experiences + Devices while narrowing Cloud + AI’s emphasis toward Azure, foundational AI and data platforms. That explanation is strategic interpretation of the reporting, not a promise that Microsoft announced a particular integration.

Was LinkedIn merged with Office?

No. There was no evidence of a legal, operational or product merger in the announcement. LinkedIn remained an independent Microsoft subsidiary, while Roslansky held responsibilities across both businesses. Microsoft could pursue closer connections among recruiting, learning, identity, collaboration and productivity without turning LinkedIn into an Office application.

What the announcement did not establish

  • No LinkedIn shutdown or Office rebrand.
  • No automatic LinkedIn features inside Word, Outlook or Copilot.
  • No announcement that LinkedIn profile data became available to Copilot.
  • No new Copilot or Microsoft 365 pricing, licensing, admin controls or compliance policy.

Existing customers should not infer a new entitlement or privacy setting from an executive reassignment alone. Any use of LinkedIn information in enterprise AI would require separately defined permissions, consent, governance and regional availability.

What it meant for Microsoft 365 Copilot users

The practical implication was organizational: Copilot was being managed alongside the productivity products in which it operates. The change itself did not alter model providers, data access, licensing eligibility, administrator controls, product availability or compliance obligations.

Organizations evaluating Copilot still need clean Microsoft 365 permissions, an AI-use policy, employee training and governance for sensitive workplace data. The leadership overlap does not by itself answer whether personal LinkedIn information could be used in an employer’s Copilot environment, what consent would be required or how regional privacy rules would apply.

What happened to Roslansky’s role afterward?

The original headline is now historical. As of the latest available profile information dated August 18, 2026, Roslansky is listed as responsible for LinkedIn, Microsoft Office, Teams and Outlook, with a Microsoft executive vice president tenure beginning in June 2025. The same profile lists his LinkedIn CEO tenure as ending in April 2026. (Roslansky’s profile)

Microsoft appointed Dan Shapero as LinkedIn CEO, reporting to Nadella, according to a later Roslansky post. Roslansky continued leading the broader productivity role while describing the work in the context of AI-driven changes to careers and work. (Roslansky’s later update)

What businesses and users should watch

The structure could support future work connecting:

  • Recruiting and hiring workflows with workplace applications
  • Career development and learning with productivity tools
  • Professional context in Outlook, Teams or Copilot
  • Enterprise AI personalization across Microsoft services

Those are possible strategic directions, not features delivered by the 2025 announcement. Any future connection would need clear controls separating personal LinkedIn information from employer-managed Microsoft 365 data, explaining consent and limiting access appropriately.

Bottom line

Microsoft’s June 2025 decision was primarily a leadership signal: productivity software, professional networking and AI were being treated as connected parts of the future of work. Roslansky initially held both the LinkedIn CEO job and Office/Copilot responsibility; by 2026, Dan Shapero ran LinkedIn while Roslansky focused on the wider Microsoft productivity portfolio. No product merger or automatic customer-facing change was announced.
