Reports of expected cuts surfaced as the company’s new fiscal year began; Microsoft announced on July 6 that it was eliminating about 4,800 roles, roughly 2.1% of its global workforce. Xbox and Commercial were among the main organizations affected, but the company did not say the cuts were primarily developer layoffs.
What happened, and when?
July 1 was the start of Microsoft’s fiscal year and the date around which reports of an expected restructuring circulated. It was not the date of Microsoft’s public confirmation. The company announced the job eliminations on July 6. Windows Central’s July 1 coverage described anticipated cuts; Microsoft’s July 6 statement set out the company’s announcement.
Announcement, employee notification and the effective date of a job elimination are not necessarily the same. Washington state filings, for example, listed certain positions for elimination in September 2026. The public information does not establish one worldwide date on which every affected employee was notified or left.
How many jobs were affected?
Microsoft said it was eliminating approximately 4,800 roles, about 2.1% of its global workforce. That is the company-wide figure; it should not be read as a count of developers or Xbox employees alone.

Xbox and gaming
Reporting put Xbox’s immediate cuts at approximately 1,600. It also described about 1,600 additional Xbox-related reductions as expected over the fiscal year. The latter figure is a planned or expected future reduction, not a confirmed count of jobs already eliminated on July 6. The Associated Press and TechCrunch reported the Xbox figures.
Microsoft said four gaming studios would transition to new management, with the stated aim of preserving their intellectual property and ongoing projects. A management transition is not, by itself, confirmation that a studio closed or that every employee there was laid off.

Washington filings identified 605 affected jobs, including 493 in Redmond, scheduled for elimination in September 2026, according to Axios Seattle. Those are Washington figures with a specified future timing, not a replacement for the global total.
Were developers and engineers targeted?
Some developers and engineering personnel were affected, particularly in Xbox’s game-development ecosystem. Microsoft also said engineering teams across the company would change their structures and priorities. Its statement identified Commercial and Xbox as the organizations mostly affected, but did not publish a global breakdown by job title or say how many of the 4,800 roles were held by software engineers, game developers or other technical workers.

“Developer layoffs” is therefore an incomplete shorthand for a broader restructuring. Developer can refer to software engineers, game developers or people in developer-facing roles; the public figures do not provide a count for any of those groups. Nor do they show that every Microsoft engineering team, Xbox studio or developer organization was affected.
Did AI cause the layoffs?
Microsoft said the July 6 roles were “not being replaced by AI.” The company also said AI is changing how work is done, automating some tasks and requiring employees to develop new skills. It connected the organizational changes to changing customer needs, business models, priorities and resource allocation. Those are the company’s explanations; public information does not establish the cause of each individual job elimination.

There is a broader investment context, but it is not proof that AI directly displaced the affected workers. In its FY26 Q3 earnings commentary, Microsoft said it expected headcount to decline year over year while continuing to invest in AI infrastructure, data, compute and talent. The investor-relations call supports a picture of restructuring alongside continued AI spending, not a role-by-role explanation of the cuts.

Microsoft tied changes in Commercial to its “Frontier Company” model, which calls for engineering expertise to work alongside customers to speed technology deployments. The company announced that model on July 2, 2026. The stated direction helps explain the organizational context, but does not identify which specific roles were eliminated because of it. Microsoft’s announcement describes the model.

The official emphasis on Commercial and Xbox does not mean other Microsoft units were untouched or that all parts of those organizations were affected equally. The company did not provide a full breakdown by division, country, job title or seniority.
What Microsoft said about affected employees
Microsoft said it would provide financial support and resources to affected employees and continue looking for internal alternatives where possible. It reported redeploying more than 4,000 employees into new roles during the preceding year, including about 500 in July 2026. These are company-reported redeployment figures; they do not specify how many people affected by the announced cuts moved to other roles.
Microsoft also said more than 30% of employees eligible for a voluntary retirement program participated. Voluntary retirements are distinct from involuntary job eliminations and should not be added to the 4,800 figure as though they were layoffs. The announcement does not establish one severance package or benefits arrangement for all employees; terms may depend on location, employment status and other individual circumstances.
How this differs from Microsoft’s 2025 layoffs
The July 2026 announcement is separate from two large 2025 rounds. The dates and approximate counts help prevent the events from being conflated:
