Microsoft 365 reportedly generated more than $20 billion in revenue in Microsoft’s fiscal year ended June 30, 2020. The figure, published on July 28, 2020, came from a report citing information shared at a private company session—not from a separately audited Microsoft 365 line in Microsoft’s public financial statements. That distinction matters: the estimate is credible as a report of an internal disclosure, but its exact amount and accounting scope were not made public.
What the 2020 report said
A July 2020 report said Microsoft had disclosed more than $20 billion in Microsoft 365 revenue for FY2020, up from $13.2 billion in FY2019. The report attributed the information to sources familiar with a private “Ready” session for Microsoft employees and partners. The contemporary report also described the increase as more than 65%.
Microsoft’s fiscal year ends on June 30, so “last year” in that July 2020 headline meant FY2020, which ran through June 30, 2020—not calendar 2020 or the year before the present day. The reported total was revenue during a fiscal year, not a disclosed annual recurring revenue figure, billings total, or subscription run rate.
How the reported growth rate fits the rounded figures
Comparing the published figures of $13.2 billion and “over $20 billion” gives a minimum increase of $6.8 billion, or about 51.5% using exactly $20 billion as the lower-bound comparison. A growth rate above 65% would require FY2020 revenue of at least about $21.8 billion. Because the FY2020 amount was reported only as “over $20 billion,” the figures can be consistent; the precise underlying total was not published.

What “Microsoft 365” meant in the FY2020 claim
The figure appears to refer to a broad commercial business, not simply the consumer subscription sold under the Microsoft 365 name today. Microsoft 365 bundles could bring together Office 365 productivity subscriptions, Windows commercial licensing components, Enterprise Mobility + Security, and commercial suites such as E3, E5, and F1. Related subscription and cloud-service revenue may also have been counted across Microsoft’s reporting categories.
The public report does not document the calculation’s complete internal perimeter. It therefore does not establish that all Office, Windows, or security revenue was included, nor does it provide a precise split by product, customer type, or plan.

- [Ideal for One Person] — With a one-time purchase of Microsoft Office Home & Business 2024, you can create, organize, and get things done.
- [Classic Office Apps] — Includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote.
- [Desktop Only & Customer Support] — To install and use on one PC or Mac, on desktop only. Microsoft 365 has your back with readily available technical support through chat or phone.
- Microsoft 365 and Office 365: Microsoft 365 is the broader product family; the names should not be treated as interchangeable.
- Commercial and consumer: The 2020 claim appears focused primarily on the commercial business, especially enterprise plans. It is not a published consumer-versus-commercial breakdown.
- Microsoft Cloud: This is a larger category that includes services beyond Microsoft 365, including Azure and Dynamics 365.
- Productivity and Business Processes: This is a Microsoft segment, not a synonym for Microsoft 365; it also contains businesses such as LinkedIn and Dynamics.
Was the $20 billion figure officially reported?
Not as a standalone audited line item in Microsoft’s public financial statements. The claim was reported by Mary Jo Foley based on sources familiar with information shared in the private session, and the contemporary account appeared at Thurrott. Microsoft’s public reporting presented broader product and segment categories rather than a distinct Microsoft 365 total matching the headline.
That makes the figure different from a number readers can verify in an annual-report table labeled “Microsoft 365 revenue.” The reported estimate should not be recast as an exact, publicly audited total, and the available account does not disclose enough detail to independently reconstruct its accounting perimeter.

How large it was relative to Microsoft
Microsoft reported about $143 billion in total FY2020 revenue. On the reported lower-bound figure, Microsoft 365 represented roughly 14% of companywide revenue: $20 billion divided by $143 billion is approximately 14.0%. This is a scale comparison based on the reported estimate, not evidence that Microsoft 365 was a separate reportable segment.
Why E5 stood out
The same report put Microsoft 365 E5 revenue at $7.5 billion in FY2020, compared with $4.2 billion in the prior fiscal year, while E5 accounted for about 5% of Office 365/Microsoft 365 seats. These are figures attributed to the private disclosure, and the seat-share denominator was not fully specified; 5% should not be read as a share of all Microsoft 365 users worldwide.

The reported mismatch between a small seat share and substantial revenue illustrates the role of premium enterprise bundles. E5 included advanced security, compliance, analytics, voice, and related capabilities, which could produce higher revenue per seat than lower-priced plans. The report does not provide a standalone E5 profit figure or establish Microsoft 365’s margins.
Why recurring subscriptions mattered to Microsoft
The reported growth fits a broader shift from one-time software licensing toward subscription and cloud services. Commercial bundles can generate recurring revenue as organizations renew, while combining productivity apps with Windows, identity, security, compliance, and device-management tools can support cross-selling and retention. Moving customers from perpetual Office licenses to Office 365 subscriptions also changes when revenue is recognized and how customer relationships are monetized.

Those strategic advantages do not establish how profitable Microsoft 365 was by itself. The $20 billion claim concerns revenue; it does not disclose standalone operating profit, cash flow, acquisition costs, or a Microsoft 365-specific margin.

Microsoft’s FY2025 annual-report materials use named product-and-service categories that provide a later public reference point. They reported $87.767 billion for Microsoft 365 Commercial products and cloud services and $7.404 billion for Microsoft 365 Consumer products and cloud services, against total company revenue of $281.724 billion. The figures appear in Microsoft’s FY2025 financial tables.
| FY2025 reported measure | Revenue | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 Commercial products and cloud services | $87.767 billion | Microsoft’s reported commercial product-and-service category |
| Microsoft 365 Consumer products and cloud services | $7.404 billion | Microsoft’s reported consumer product-and-service category |
| Total Microsoft revenue | $281.724 billion | Companywide revenue |
| Microsoft Cloud revenue | $168.9 billion | A broader cloud category, not Microsoft 365 alone |
Microsoft’s FY2025 annual report describes Microsoft Cloud as including Microsoft 365 Commercial cloud, Azure and other cloud services, the commercial portion of LinkedIn, and Dynamics 365. The FY2025 fourth-quarter earnings release said Microsoft 365 Commercial products and cloud-services revenue grew 16% in the quarter, with Microsoft 365 Commercial cloud revenue up 18%.
These later figures are useful context, not a direct restatement of the FY2020 estimate. The annual-report categories are publicly defined product-and-service measures, and the commercial category is broader than a narrow count of Microsoft 365 subscriptions. Differences in period, category definitions, and disclosure basis mean the later totals cannot be substituted for or used alone to validate the private FY2020 figure.
