Microsoft announced the change on January 16, 2025, saying the monthly price would increase by $3. Existing subscribers generally saw the higher price at their next renewal, not on announcement day. Microsoft also cited accumulated product improvements and future innovation, so it did not describe the entire increase as a separate Copilot surcharge.
What changed in Microsoft 365?
Two linked changes affected consumer plans:
- Copilot and Designer were added to Microsoft 365 Personal and Family.
- The U.S. monthly price of each plan increased by $3, equivalent to $36 over 12 monthly payments at the stated rate.
Copilot is integrated into Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Designer and the Microsoft 365 experience, rather than being only a separate chatbot. Microsoft’s announcement is at Microsoft’s January 16, 2025 announcement. Current feature details are listed in Microsoft’s Copilot documentation.
The $3 figure is the clearest official U.S. comparison. Your actual bill can differ because of annual versus monthly billing, taxes, promotions, retailer pricing, currency and the company that processes the subscription.
When did the higher price apply?
Announcement versus renewal
Microsoft announced the change on January 16, 2025. Existing customers were told the new price would apply at their next renewal. An annual subscriber could therefore remain on the old rate until a renewal date extending into 2026, while a monthly subscriber might encounter the change sooner. Microsoft’s renewal FAQ explains the timing at this support page.

That screen is more reliable than an old annual-price comparison. Apple, Google and some retailers control billing, cancellation and refunds for subscriptions bought through them. Microsoft explains where each subscription must be managed at Where can I manage my Microsoft 365 subscription?.
Which plans were affected?
The January 2025 announcement specifically covered the consumer Microsoft 365 Personal and Microsoft 365 Family plans. It did not establish that every business, enterprise, education or standalone Office product received the same increase.

| Plan or product | Relationship to the 2025 change | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 Personal | Copilot and Designer added; U.S. price increased by $3 per month | Actual renewal price varies by billing term, country, tax and seller |
| Microsoft 365 Family | Copilot and Designer added; U.S. price increased by $3 per month | Copilot benefits are for the subscription owner, not automatically every family member |
| Microsoft 365 Basic | Lower-feature alternative | Does not include advanced AI features and is not a full Personal or Family replacement |
| Personal Classic or Family Classic | Non-Copilot options for eligible customers | Availability depends on account, country, timing and billing channel; not guaranteed for new purchases |
| Business and enterprise plans | Separate commercial licensing and pricing | Do not apply the consumer $3 increase to these products |
| Office 2024 | Separate one-time-purchase model | No ongoing new features or included upgrade to the next major release |
Commercial Copilot billing is governed by different rules; a separate Microsoft commercial announcement discussed a 5% adjustment for certain monthly-billed annual-term subscriptions beginning April 1, 2025. It was not the Personal and Family event described here: Microsoft’s commercial billing discussion.
What Copilot actually includes
Applications and features
Depending on plan, region and eligibility, subscribers can encounter Copilot features in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Designer and the Microsoft 365 app. The Microsoft 365 app also began transitioning to the Microsoft 365 Copilot app in January 2025; that app-name change is separate from the subscription entitlement. See Microsoft’s transition explanation.

Limits and family access
Do not treat consumer Copilot as unlimited AI. Microsoft’s current documentation describes plan-specific limits, AI credits and feature allowances. It says Personal and Family include 60 AI credits per month for listed image-generation and editing functions, while other features have separate limits that can change. Details are maintained at Microsoft’s AI credits and limits page.
On Family, the subscription owner receives the AI benefits. Sharing Office apps or storage with household members does not automatically share the owner’s Copilot entitlement. That distinction matters when dividing the Family cost among several people.

Can you turn Copilot off without lowering the bill?
Microsoft said users could disable or enable Copilot in applications such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Hiding the interface does not change the subscription tier or remove the price increase. To pay less, you must change to an offered lower-feature plan or cancel the subscription; simply switching off Copilot in an app is not a billing action.
How to avoid the Copilot-inclusive price
Check for Classic
Personal Classic and Family Classic were introduced as non-Copilot, no-AI-credit versions for eligible existing subscribers. Microsoft’s announcement described them as limited-time options for customers with recurring billing through Microsoft. Current switching documentation still references Classic, but it may not appear for every account or country and may not be sold to new customers.

Use Microsoft’s downgrade flow
- Sign in at account.microsoft.com/services.
- Select Manage beside Microsoft 365.
- Select Cancel subscription.
- Review the lower-feature plan shown on the cancellation page.
- Select the desired plan and read the final confirmation carefully.
Microsoft says a lower-feature plan may begin when the current term expires. Exact labels and offers vary. The instructions are at Switch between Microsoft 365 subscriptions. If Apple, Google or a retailer billed you, use that provider’s account instead. Refund and cancellation guidance is at Microsoft’s cancellation page.
Consider Basic
Microsoft 365 Basic is aimed at people who mainly need OneDrive storage and Microsoft account benefits. Microsoft says it does not include advanced AI features. It is not equivalent to Personal or Family: check whether you would lose desktop Office applications, larger storage or other benefits before switching.

Office 2024
Office 2024 provides a one-time purchase for users who prefer not to renew. Microsoft says it does not receive ongoing new features and has no included upgrade path; a future major release would require another purchase. It also does not reproduce Microsoft 365’s subscription storage, family sharing and continuing service bundle. See Microsoft’s comparison of Microsoft 365 and one-time-purchase Office.
Another productivity suite
Google Workspace and similar services can make sense when browser collaboration and an existing ecosystem matter more than Microsoft desktop compatibility. Compare desktop versus browser features, offline access, storage, file-format fidelity, Excel macro needs, family or business licensing and whether AI tools are included or separately priced. Google’s current plan information is at workspace.google.com/pricing.html; prices and bundles can change.
Is the extra cost worth it?
- Stay on Personal or Family if you regularly use Copilot in Word, Excel, Outlook or PowerPoint, value Designer, and accept the higher renewal price.
- Choose Classic if you want the traditional Microsoft 365 apps without Copilot and the option appears in your Microsoft-managed account.
- Choose Basic if storage and account benefits matter more than desktop Office.
- Choose Office 2024 if you want a one-time payment and can accept no ongoing feature updates or subscription storage.
- Change ecosystems if browser collaboration is more important than Microsoft-specific workflows and file compatibility.
Common surprises to check before changing plans
- No Classic option: you may be ineligible, using a third-party billing channel, holding prepaid time, using an organization-managed account, or viewing a new-purchase page instead of the cancellation flow.
- A different price: country, currency, tax, annual or monthly billing, promotions, retailer pricing and renewal date all affect the amount.
- Family members expect Copilot: Microsoft limits the AI benefit to the subscription owner.
- Business users assume the same increase: commercial Microsoft 365 and Copilot licensing are separate from the consumer announcement.
- Copilot looks unlimited: current plans use credits and feature-specific limits, which Microsoft can revise.
The Bottom Line
Microsoft did raise U.S. Personal and Family prices by $3 per month when Copilot and Designer were bundled in January 2025. The practical way to avoid paying for that tier is to check your renewal account for Classic or another lower-feature plan, switch to Basic if storage is enough, or leave the subscription model for Office 2024. Your account’s renewal screen—not an old headline price—is the authoritative amount.
