There was no single Microsoft 365 price increase in 2025. U.S. Personal and Family subscriptions were reported to move to higher annual prices when Copilot and other AI features were added, while commercial annual-term subscriptions paid monthly generally gained a 5% premium from April 1, 2025. Teams Phone had separate commercial pricing changes.
Your actual cost depends on the plan, country, billing channel, tax, and renewal date. Check your Microsoft account or invoice rather than relying only on the date in a price-change email.

Microsoft 365 Family reportedly rose from $99.99 to $129.99 per year. That is also $30 more annually, but approximately 30% because the original price was higher.
Microsoft presented the change as a package change as well as a price change: Copilot and other AI-related capabilities were added to the plans. Microsoft’s documentation explains how Copilot works in Personal, Family, and Premium subscriptions.
That does not mean every person covered by a Family subscription receives identical AI access. Microsoft says AI benefits are available to the subscription owner and are not simply six full Copilot seats for all Family members. AI features can also have credits and usage limits that vary by plan; see Microsoft’s AI credits and limits documentation.
When did the higher consumer price actually apply?
February 14, 2025 was the reported effective date, but it was not necessarily the day every subscriber saw a new charge. Existing annual subscribers generally encountered the new price at their next renewal. Someone whose annual term renewed later in 2025—or extended into January 2026—could continue paying the old rate until that renewal.
Monthly subscribers could see a change sooner, depending on their subscription terms. The practical rule is simple: use the renewal date and price shown in your account dashboard and compare them with your previous receipt. Microsoft’s Copilot subscription FAQ discusses renewal timing.
What are Personal Classic and Family Classic?
Classic plans are the lower-feature, no-Copilot route for subscribers who want the traditional Microsoft 365 benefits without the newly bundled AI capabilities. Microsoft lists Personal Classic and Family Classic among the plans that may be available when switching subscriptions.
For someone who mainly needs desktop Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneDrive, Classic may remain suitable. The trade-off is reduced or no access to Copilot and related AI features. Exact availability and pricing depend on your account, country, and purchase channel, so do not assume a Classic plan will appear for every subscriber.

Switching to a plan with fewer features generally involves cancelling the existing subscription and purchasing the replacement. The change may take effect at expiration or renewal rather than immediately. Remaining subscription time may also be converted at a plan-specific rate instead of transferring day for day. Review Microsoft’s subscription-switching guidance and conversion table before confirming.

What changed for business customers?
The main documented commercial change was not a blanket increase to every Business, E3, E5, or Office 365 license. Beginning April 1, 2025, new and renewing annual-term subscriptions paid monthly generally cost 5% more than the equivalent annual-term subscription paid upfront. Microsoft said the structure applied across Buy Online, Cloud Solution Provider, and Microsoft Customer Agreement Enterprise channels.
“Monthly” and “annual commitment paid monthly” are not always the same. An annual commitment paid monthly still carries an annual term and may have different cancellation or seat-reduction rules than a true month-to-month plan. Check the exact wording in the Microsoft 365 admin center, partner quote, or agreement.
Example: the 5% commercial premium
If an annual-term license costs $120 per user per year when paid upfront:

- Annual commitment paid monthly at a 5% premium: $126 per year, or approximately $10.50 per month, before tax.
This is an illustration, not a universal Microsoft list price. Microsoft’s commercial billing announcement contains the relevant qualification.
For eligible businesses, annual upfront billing can reduce total cost if cash flow permits. Paying monthly may still be worthwhile when preserving cash is more important than the 5% premium. Compare the full term, renewal date, promotional pricing, cancellation terms, and rules for reducing seats.

Teams Phone and commercial Copilot were separate changes
Teams Phone was not part of the consumer Personal or Family increase. Teams Phone Standard was listed for new and renewing commercial customers at $10 per user per month, or $120 per user per year. Teams Phone for Frontline Workers and Teams Phone with Calling Plan bundles also received pricing updates.
Microsoft stated that customers buying Teams Phone through Microsoft 365 E5 or Office 365 E5 annual subscriptions with annual billing did not see a pricing change in that specific announcement. Channel, agreement, and billing terms still matter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMicrosoft also introduced monthly billing for annual-term Microsoft 365 Copilot subscriptions. The annual-term monthly option was 5% above annual upfront billing, while the annual billing price in the cited announcement remained unchanged.
Why did Microsoft say prices changed?
Microsoft attributed the changes to Copilot and other AI capabilities, product improvements delivered over time, more flexible payment options, billing standardization, and continued investment in its services.
The value judgment depends on whether you use those additions. Copilot may be useful for drafting and rewriting documents, summarizing email or meetings, explaining Excel data, creating presentations, and other AI-assisted work. It may be poor value if you use Office occasionally, already use another AI tool, do not want AI, or mainly pay for OneDrive storage.
The Microsoft 365 app transition that began January 15, 2025 also caused confusion. The former Microsoft 365 app began transitioning to the Microsoft 365 Copilot app, but that app transition is not identical to unlocking Copilot features inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, or OneNote. See Microsoft’s app-transition explanation.
Which option is cheapest for your needs?
| If you need… | First option to investigate | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Integrated AI in Office | Regular Personal or Family plan | Higher recurring cost; AI benefits may be owner-only and limited |
| Traditional Office and cloud storage without Copilot | Personal Classic or Family Classic, if offered | Availability, features, and timing vary by account and region |
| Core desktop Word, Excel, and PowerPoint with no subscription | Office Home 2024 | No full Microsoft 365 cloud-service bundle or continuous subscription updates |
| Business email, administration, security, or compliance | Business Basic, Standard, Premium, E3, or E5 comparison | Higher complexity and different licensing terms |
| Basic documents and spreadsheets only | Free web tools or another office suite | Potential compatibility, privacy, offline-use, macro, and add-in limitations |
Microsoft describes Office 2024 as a one-time purchase, unlike the continuously updated Microsoft 365 subscription. It is not an equivalent replacement if you need substantial OneDrive storage, household sharing, advanced security, collaboration features, or subscription-only capabilities.

Households should compare the cost with the number of people who actually use Office, OneDrive, and AI—not simply the maximum number of people the Family plan can cover. A personal subscription used for organizational work may also be inappropriate where business accounts, centralized administration, compliance, or data separation are required; Microsoft explains the distinction between home and business plans.
Eligible employees should also check Microsoft’s Workplace Discount Program. Microsoft support says an employer discount may begin at the existing subscription’s annual renewal date, but eligibility and the offered rate are not universal.
Frequently asked questions
Did every Microsoft 365 plan increase in 2025?
No. Consumer price-and-package changes, the commercial 5% annual-term monthly-billing premium, Teams Phone updates, and Copilot billing changes were separate events. Government, education, nonprofit, and special-market plans can have different terms.

Can I keep the old consumer price?
Not necessarily. You may be offered Personal Classic or Family Classic, but availability and pricing depend on your account, market, plan, and billing channel. Check the switching options shown in your account before cancelling.
Can I cancel without losing access immediately?
Usually, turning off recurring billing leaves access until the paid term ends, but the result can vary by plan, refund eligibility, and seller. Confirm the displayed expiration date and terms before cancelling.
What if I bought Microsoft 365 through Apple or Google?
Manage billing and cancellation through the original provider. Microsoft may not be able to change a subscription controlled by that billing partner.
Are business and consumer increases the same?
No. The consumer figures concern reported U.S. Personal and Family annual prices. The 5% commercial change primarily concerns annual commitments paid monthly, while Teams Phone had separate pricing. Your agreement and channel determine the result.
