It fills part of the gap Fry’s Electronics left behind, but it is smaller and more focused—not a revival of Fry’s sprawling, theatrical electronics-store experience.
What opened in Santa Clara
The store is at 5201 Stevens Creek Boulevard, Santa Clara, CA 95051. Micro Center’s official Santa Clara store page lists regular hours of 10 a.m.–9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m.–6 p.m. Sunday; check the page before traveling for holiday or exceptional hours. The company announced the May 30, 2025 grand opening in its Santa Clara opening notice.
This is a return, not Micro Center’s first Silicon Valley store. VentureBeat’s May 2025 report on the opening says the retailer previously operated near Intel’s Santa Clara headquarters and closed that location in 2012 after lease negotiations failed. The report described the new store as Micro Center’s 29th location at the time; that is a launch-era figure, not a current company-wide count.
Why the Fry’s comparison resonates
Fry’s Electronics closed in February 2021. In the Bay Area, it was more than a place to buy components: its large stores, themed interiors and broad, sometimes unruly assortment made shopping feel like an event. Engineers, students, hobbyists and startup workers could browse everything from computer parts to household electronics under one roof.

That experience is difficult to reproduce in an era of online shopping and more specialized stores. A physical retailer can still offer something a product listing cannot: the chance to inspect a case or keyboard, compare a monitor in person, ask whether parts will work together, and leave with a replacement component the same day.
What you can shop for—and do—there
Micro Center’s Santa Clara materials describe a technology-focused assortment that includes desktop PCs, gaming systems, laptops, processors, motherboards, memory, storage, graphics cards, cases, power supplies, monitors, networking gear, gaming peripherals, Apple products, 3D-printing supplies, single-board computers, audio and video equipment, and cables and adapters. The official store page says the store carries more than 25,000 products. VentureBeat’s opening report described more than 20,000 products. Those are differently sourced descriptions, not a single independently established count.

The store is built around practical technology tasks as much as browsing. Micro Center lists custom PC building; desktop and laptop repair and upgrades; Apple repair; diagnostics; technical help; GPU trade-in; recycling; and in-store pickup. Its new-stores information also describes brand-authorized service for selected manufacturers. Eligibility, service terms, parts availability and timing depend on the device and the specific service, so confirm details with the store before relying on a repair timeline.
VentureBeat reported that the Santa Clara store offered same-day diagnostics and repairs and had access to more than 3,000 parts through OEM relationships. Those are operational claims made in the launch coverage, not a guarantee that every repair can be completed the same day.

The “Fry’s vacuum” claim is most convincing when it means a loss of local, enthusiast-oriented technology shopping—not equivalent square footage or breadth. Micro Center is a partial successor to one important part of Fry’s role, rather than a like-for-like replacement.
When a visit is worth it—and when it isn’t
Micro Center is a strong option when
- You need a PC component quickly and Santa Clara shows it available for pickup.
- You are assembling or upgrading a computer and want to inspect parts or ask compatibility questions.
- You need troubleshooting, diagnostics or a repair assessment.
- You want to compare physical products such as cases, keyboards, monitors or peripherals.
- You are shopping across several connected categories, such as a full build or gaming setup.
Online shopping or another retailer may suit you better when
- You know exactly which standardized item you need, do not need it immediately and find a materially better price elsewhere.
- The Santa Clara store does not list the product as available, or you need a niche brand it does not carry.
- You are outside the South Bay and the trip is inconvenient.
- You want a broad general-electronics or household-goods selection rather than a focused technology store.
There is no documented, dated, like-for-like price comparison here that establishes Micro Center as cheaper than Best Buy, Central Computers, Amazon or B&H across the board. The useful distinction is the shopping task: Micro Center emphasizes local access, PC components and in-person assistance; Best Buy is a mainstream consumer-electronics option, Central Computers is another Bay Area specialist, Amazon offers broad online selection and delivery, and B&H is a prominent online destination for photo, video and creator equipment. Check current prices, terms and availability for the exact item you need.

Check before you drive
- Select the Santa Clara location. Use the Santa Clara shopping page or store selector, then check availability for the specific item. Store stock can differ from shipping availability.
- Reserve or order for pickup if available. Micro Center promotes an “18 minute” in-store pickup experience on relevant pages, including its pickup and cart page. Treat that as a service target, not a guaranteed completion time; processing and store traffic can affect it.
- Bring the details that affect compatibility. For a PC part, have your motherboard, case, power supply and existing component models available. For a repair, note the device model, symptoms, recent changes and any warranty status.
- Ask about the exact terms before paying or leaving equipment for service. Confirm whether an item is open-box, what accessories are included, applicable return and warranty terms, repair eligibility, parts availability and expected timing. These details can vary by product and service.
- Check the store page again before departure. Popular parts can sell out or have quantity limits, while posted regular hours may not apply on holidays or during unusual conditions.
The official store page also advertises product availability lookup, pickup and technical services. Those tools make the trip easier to plan, but they do not guarantee that a listing will remain available until arrival.

A specialty retailer’s return is a meaningful sign that there is room for in-person technology shopping in the South Bay. It gives builders, creators and repair customers a local place to handle products and seek help. But one store opening does not establish that the region’s retail economy has broadly recovered, nor does it restore Fry’s distinctive scale and cultural footprint.

For people who miss having a serious electronics destination nearby, Micro Center offers a more targeted answer: a place to build, upgrade, repair and explore technology in person. Whether it fills the part of the Fry’s gap that matters to you depends on whether you valued specialist help and component access—or Fry’s much larger, anything-might-be-on-the-shelf sprawl.
