Metara Raised $11.5 Million in a 2005 Series E Round for Semiconductor Metrology

Metara completed an $11.5 million Series E financing in November 2005 to expand inline chemical-metrology tools for semiconductor fabs. Here are the investors, products, purpose, and limits of the public record.

Sunnyvale, California-based Metara Inc. announced on November 14, 2005, that it had completed an $11.5 million Series E financing. The semiconductor-equipment startup said it would use the money to expand its inline chemical-metrology business, with investors highlighting the need for a stronger global service infrastructure.

What happened

Metara’s announcement was reported publicly on November 15, 2005, by EE Times and EDN. This was a historical financing event, not a current startup raise.

Item Reported detail
Amount $11.5 million
Round Series E
Announcement November 14, 2005
Public reports November 15, 2005
Headquarters Sunnyvale, California
Stated purpose Market expansion

The available reports do not disclose valuation, dilution, ownership sold, liquidation preferences, or other financing terms. A Series E label confirms the company’s designation for this round; it does not, by itself, establish that it was the fifth financing transaction in the company’s complete history.

Who invested

Lead investors

  • VantagePoint Venture Partners
  • Cipio Partners

Other named participants

  • Compass Venture Partners
  • Merifin Capital NV

EE Times described VantagePoint and Cipio as existing investors. It did not clearly establish whether every participating investor was already on Metara’s cap table. A secondary Gaebler entry calls the third investor “Compass Technology Partners,” while the contemporaneous reports say “Compass Venture Partners.” The contemporary wording is the safer attribution, and the names should not be treated as definitively identical.

What Metara built

Metara developed inline chemical-metrology tools for semiconductor fabrication. In plain terms, its systems were intended to measure wet-process chemistry near the manufacturing line instead of relying only on intermittent samples sent for laboratory analysis. Earlier coverage in EDN and EE Times framed the opportunity as earlier detection of chemistry drift and contamination.

Sentry Chemical Composition Metrology

The Sentry CCM system was designed to monitor the integrity and composition of process baths, including applications such as advanced copper electroplating and cobalt processing.

Sentry Trace Contamination Metrology

The Sentry TCM system was designed to identify and quantify metallic and organic contaminants in process baths. The two products addressed related but different questions: CCM focused on whether the intended chemistry remained within control, while TCM focused on unwanted contaminants.

Company and contemporaneous trade-press materials described an inline mass-spectrometry approach. They reported a CCM measurement approximately every 30 minutes and TCM throughput of about eight measurements per hour. Those figures are attributed claims, not independently validated performance results.

  • 【Ideal Plane】In the field of inspection of instruments, precision tools and mechanical components, it is critical to have a device or platform that provides an ideal reference plane. The reference plane needs to be highly flat and stable, and its flatness should be controlled within very tight tolerances.
  • 【Versatile】The marble measuring base is compatible with most dial/digital indicators and other market indicators.

Why the financing mattered

Semiconductor manufacturing depends on tightly controlled wet chemistry. If composition changes or contamination appears, a fab may face process variation, yield risk, wasted chemicals, or delayed troubleshooting. More frequent measurements can potentially reveal those changes sooner than offline testing.

That proposition also carries practical requirements. Inline equipment must be integrated with process tools and chemical-management systems, calibrated, maintained, and supported in production. The economic case depends on whether the measurements improve control, reduce scrap or chemical waste, or otherwise produce a return on the fab’s investment. The available reporting does not quantify those costs or benefits for Metara.

How the round fit Metara’s commercialization effort

The financing followed Metara’s June 2005 rollout of the Sentry CCM and TCM products, described in a Chemical Online announcement and trade coverage. The timing suggests a move from developing the platform toward expanding sales and support, although the financing report itself specifically states only “market expansion.”

Investor commentary identified global service infrastructure as an operational priority for expected sales growth and demanding semiconductor customers. Hiring, field service, customer deployment, and international sales may have been part of that effort, but the available reports do not provide an itemized allocation of the $11.5 million.

Earlier financing and what it does not prove

Metara had previously announced a $20 million financing round in July 2004, led by VantagePoint Venture Partners, with Merifin Capital NV and West Steag Partners GmbH among the previous investors. The stated use was product sales and business development, according to EE Times.

That earlier round shows the 2005 Series E was part of a broader commercialization effort rather than a first institutional financing. It is not appropriate to present $31.5 million as Metara’s definitive lifetime funding: the available articles do not provide a complete capitalization history, and database estimates disagree. For example, secondary entries from Gaebler and CB Insights do not reconcile all financing records.

What remains unknown

  • The company’s valuation and the percentage sold to investors.
  • The exact split between sales, hiring, service operations, equipment, and other uses.
  • Independent validation of the reported measurement intervals and throughput.
  • A complete cumulative funding total.
  • Whether Metara was later acquired, went public, shut down, or continued under another structure.

One secondary database labels Metara “out of business,” but that status is not confirmed by a sufficiently authoritative primary source. The 2005 reports also do not establish a later exit or operating outcome.

Bottom line

Metara’s $11.5 million Series E was a 2005 commercialization-stage financing for a specialized semiconductor-equipment company. The proceeds were earmarked for market expansion, while investors emphasized building global service capability around inline chemical monitoring. The round’s amount and named investors are documented in contemporaneous trade coverage; its valuation, detailed spending plan, complete funding history, and eventual company outcome are not.
