Meta said Threads had more than 130 million monthly active users during its fourth-quarter 2023 earnings call on February 1, 2024. That was a major recovery milestone for the text-focused app, but it is not Threads’ current user count: Meta later reported 500 million monthly active users on June 16, 2026.
What Meta actually announced
Mark Zuckerberg disclosed the figure during Meta’s Q4 2023 earnings call, saying Threads had “more than 130 million monthly actives.” The statement appears in Meta’s official transcript (Meta earnings-call transcript). The call took place on February 1, 2024, according to Meta’s investor-events page.
“More than 130 million” means the figure was above that threshold, not exactly 130 million. It also referred to monthly active users—people active during the relevant month—not total registrations, downloads, daily users, time spent, or verified individual people.
When the milestone was measured
The announcement was made on February 1, 2024, after Meta’s fourth quarter ended December 31, 2023. It should therefore be read as a reported period-end measurement, not as a live counter showing the precise number of users on the day of the call.

Meta did not publish the full activity threshold, geographic breakdown, account-deduplication method, or retention data with the statement. The number is a first-party company disclosure; no independent audit of the 130-million figure was established in the announcement.
Why the increase mattered
Meta had previously discussed Threads as approaching 100 million active users during its Q3 2023 earnings discussion. Coverage from TechCrunch characterized the move as approximately 30 million higher than that prior-quarter figure.

The growth was notable because Threads experienced a sharp drop in attention after its July 2023 launch. Reaching more than 130 million monthly actives by the end of that year suggested that usage was rebuilding rather than simply reflecting the launch surge.
What may have driven Threads’ growth
Instagram distribution
Threads was closely connected to Instagram, giving Meta an established audience for onboarding, identity, recommendations, and discovery. That distribution advantage may have lowered the friction of trying the service compared with starting on a stand-alone network.

Product iteration
Meta continued adding features after launch as it addressed complaints about the initial product’s limited functionality. Product improvements can support repeat visits, although the 130-million disclosure does not isolate the effect of any particular feature.
European Union availability
Threads became available in the European Union in December 2023, expanding its potential audience shortly before the milestone. Social Media Today reported that expansion, but the available figures do not show that EU access alone caused the increase.

Demand for alternatives to X
Threads entered a market shaped by uncertainty and dissatisfaction surrounding Twitter, later X. It competed with services including Bluesky, Mastodon, and Nostr, as TechCrunch noted. That market opening may have helped attract people looking for a text-based discussion platform, but the 130-million figure does not show how many users came from X.
What 130 million monthly actives does—and does not—prove
What it shows
- Threads had reached substantial global scale within its first year.
- Usage had recovered materially from the post-launch drop-off.
- Meta’s Instagram distribution and infrastructure gave the service a powerful route to audience growth.
What it does not show
- How many people used Threads daily or posted regularly.
- How long users stayed, how often they returned, or how activity was distributed between heavy and light users.
- Whether accounts were automated, abandoned, duplicated, or otherwise low-engagement; Meta did not provide enough public methodology to determine that.
- That Threads had surpassed X in influence, news relevance, or cultural impact.
A monthly active-user figure is a reach metric. It is not a direct measure of engagement quality or competitive victory.

How Threads compared with X and other alternatives
Threads had Meta’s distribution and recommendation systems, while X had a longer-established real-time news and conversation ecosystem. Those are different competitive strengths.
Direct numerical comparisons are risky because companies may report different definitions, dates, geographies, and methodologies. User figures for Bluesky, Mastodon, X, and other services should not be treated as equivalent to Meta’s Threads MAU figure unless the underlying metric is clearly identified.

Current status
The 130-million milestone is an early-2024 historical datapoint, not a current estimate. As of Meta’s June 16, 2026 announcement, the company said Threads had reached 500 million monthly active users. That later disclosure supersedes the 130-million figure when describing Threads’ latest reported scale.
