Yes. LightSpeed Retail Inc. acquired MerchantOS on July 24, 2013, and announced LightSpeed Cloud, a web-based retail point-of-sale product built from MerchantOS technology. The deal gave LightSpeed a browser-based option alongside its Mac-oriented retail software; MerchantOS’s product and team continued under the LightSpeed Cloud name.

What happened in the MerchantOS acquisition?

LightSpeed Retail Inc. acquired MerchantOS on July 24, 2013. The announcement was paired with the launch of LightSpeed Cloud, which drew on MerchantOS’s existing technology. Some secondary coverage used the word “merged,” but contemporaneous reporting and a later transaction summary identify LightSpeed as the acquirer. The purchase price and detailed deal terms were not reported in the available coverage.

Bicycle Retailer’s July 24, 2013 report covered the acquisition and customer transition. A later MarketScreener summary attributed to S&P Capital IQ also identifies LightSpeed Retail Inc. as the acquirer.

What MerchantOS brought to LightSpeed

MerchantOS provided cloud-based point-of-sale and inventory-control software for independent retailers, including bike shops. Its browser-accessible, HTML5 approach was designed to work across computer platforms rather than depend on Apple hardware. LightSpeed’s retail products at the time were strongly associated with Macs, so MerchantOS gave the company a platform-neutral product as well as experience serving inventory-focused stores.

LightSpeed said the acquisition added more than 2,400 customer locations, according to its LightSpeed Cloud announcement and Bicycle Retailer. TechCrunch rounded the addition to about 2,000 locations in its coverage of the launch. The figures are contemporary descriptions of the customer base, not a disclosed valuation or measure of revenue.

What was LightSpeed Cloud?

LightSpeed Cloud was presented as a web-based retail-management and POS system for sales, inventory, and reporting. The company described it as HTML5-based, usable from a retailer’s computer of choice, and supported by an iPad application. It complemented LightSpeed Pro, the company’s existing retail product, rather than simply replacing it. The strategic change was that LightSpeed could serve retailers seeking cloud access without requiring a Mac-centered back-office setup.

The historical company styling was “LightSpeed”; the current corporate brand is “Lightspeed.” LightSpeed Cloud is the period product name, not the name under which the company currently markets its retail offering.

What MerchantOS customers were told at the time

The initial 2013 transition message said MerchantOS’s product and team would continue under the LightSpeed Cloud name. Existing customers were told their product and price would stay the same initially; customers who changed plans would move to new pricing. LightSpeed also planned to transition customers to a new interface over the following months and said customers would have a chance to review it before switching. Those statements describe the initial transition policy announced in 2013, not a permanent price or support guarantee.

What became of MerchantOS?

MerchantOS’s technology and team became part of LightSpeed’s cloud retail product line. A 2016 report refers to MerchantOS as part of Lightspeed and discusses the former MerchantOS team, while a later technology analysis lists MerchantOS as a July 2013 acquisition and describes its POS and inventory-control role. Neither establishes a specific date on which the technology was discontinued. The closure of Lightspeed’s Santa Cruz office reported in 2016 is not, by itself, evidence that MerchantOS technology ended.

Today, Lightspeed markets its retail product as Lightspeed Retail, not as a separately marketed MerchantOS product. The exact chronology of product-name changes after LightSpeed Cloud is not established by these sources, so it is more accurate to describe MerchantOS as part of the product line’s history than to claim a direct, one-step renaming.

How the 2013 deal relates to Lightspeed Retail today

The acquisition was an early expansion beyond LightSpeed’s Apple-centric retail software: it brought a browser-based product, inventory-focused capabilities, and an established customer base into the company. Lightspeed’s current retail platform is substantially broader than the original MerchantOS product. Its present product materials describe POS, inventory, payments, e-commerce, reporting, workflows, APIs, and multi-location operations. Those are current platform capabilities, not a list of features that can automatically be attributed to MerchantOS in 2013.

For a retailer evaluating the modern product, the U.S. Lightspeed Retail pricing page displayed Basic at $89 per month, Core at $149 per month, and Plus at $289 per month when checked August 18, 2026. These are displayed plan prices, not a guaranteed total: the page’s terms, billing frequency, locations, registers, hardware, taxes, payment arrangements, and services can affect costs. The page also displayed a 1.5% card-present rate for Lightspeed Payments; retailers should confirm applicable geography, eligibility, and contract terms directly.

Before choosing a modern POS—or changing an existing Lightspeed account—check the details that affect operating costs and migration:

  • Confirm supported operating systems and hardware for the specific plan; the historical browser-based positioning does not establish current device compatibility.
  • Compare the inventory, purchasing, supplier, variant, and multi-location tools you actually need against the plan’s included capabilities.
  • Check payment-processing requirements and whether your preferred processor is supported in your region and edition.
  • Review e-commerce, API, and workflow access, which can differ by plan.
  • Ask how additional registers and locations are priced, and whether onboarding or implementation services cost extra.
  • Before migrating, verify export formats, access to historical sales and customer data, integrations, offline behavior, and how transactions reconcile after connectivity returns.

Lightspeed’s X-Series support documentation warns that switching from a legacy plan to a current plan may be irreversible. Existing customers should read the plan guide and plan-change FAQ and confirm account-specific consequences before proceeding.

What the acquisition means for former MerchantOS users

MerchantOS is best understood as an acquired product and former brand whose technology entered Lightspeed’s cloud retail offering—not as a currently verified standalone product to buy. A retailer researching the old system should evaluate Lightspeed Retail as it exists now, rather than assume the original MerchantOS interface, features, pricing, or customer terms remain available. The acquisition’s lasting significance is the product and market expansion it enabled, not proof that every original feature or customer arrangement persisted unchanged.
