‘Melania’ Box Office: Did Amazon’s $75 Million Outlay Pay Off?

Theatrically, Melania grossed far less than Amazon MGM’s reported $75 million rights-and-marketing outlay. That points to a box-office shortfall, but not a definitive verdict on the film’s overall return.

Melania looks like a theatrical bust against the reported $75 million Amazon MGM spent on rights and marketing: Amazon says the documentary grossed more than $16.6 million in theaters. But that is not a complete profit calculation. Box-office gross is not the distributor’s net receipts, and Amazon has not disclosed the film’s Prime Video audience, streaming revenue, or subscriber impact. The defensible verdict is that the theatrical run fell far short of the reported outlay; the film’s overall financial return is unknown.

What does the reported $75 million cover?

The widely cited $75 million is a combination of two reported figures, not a disclosed production budget. The Associated Press reported that Amazon MGM paid about $40 million for the rights and spent about $35 million on marketing. Those figures describe reported acquisition and promotion costs; they do not establish the project’s complete accounting or its total costs and revenues. The Associated Press reported the amounts.

How did the theatrical gross compare with that outlay?

Amazon MGM said the film earned more than $16.6 million over its theatrical run. Amazon’s announcement describes that as the film’s theatrical gross. Box Office Mojo’s release record lists a cumulative gross of $16,357,453, with a release period from January 30 through March 6, 2026. The figures are close but not identical, so they should remain attributed to their respective sources rather than treated as the same total or cutoff. Box Office Mojo’s record gives its figure and dates.

Compared with the reported $75 million in rights and marketing, the theatrical gross was less than one quarter of that reported outlay. That is a simple gross-to-outlay comparison, not a profit margin or a break-even calculation: cinemas retain part of ticket sales, and the sources do not establish the distributor’s net receipts or the film’s full costs.

Did the film at least open better than expected?

Yes. The Associated Press reported an estimated $7 million North American opening, above a reported pre-release forecast range of $3 million to $5 million. That stronger-than-forecast start is a positive opening-weekend result, but it does not change the gap between the full theatrical gross and the reported rights-and-marketing outlay. An opening estimate and a cumulative gross measure different parts of the run.

What do audience scores and opening response tell us?

The AP reported an A CinemaScore and said opening audiences skewed older and female. Variety later reported a 98% Rotten Tomatoes Popcornmeter among verified ticket buyers. The Popcornmeter is a verified-audience measure, not a critics score. These signals describe favorable reactions among surveyed or verified viewers; they do not establish how many people watched overall, broad market demand, or financial return. Variety’s report identifies the Popcornmeter result.

Could Prime Video make up the difference?

The documentary began streaming on Prime Video on March 9, 2026, after its theatrical release. Amazon described the theatrical opening as the largest documentary opening in the preceding ten years, excluding music and concert films, and framed the cinema release as part of a strategy to build awareness ahead of streaming. That is the studio’s characterization of its distribution strategy, not evidence that the film earned back its reported outlay.

The sources do not disclose Prime Video viewing figures, streaming revenue, subscription impact, or other measurable strategic value. Without those figures—and without the distributor’s theatrical receipts or a full project-level accounting—it is not possible to determine whether the film was profitable overall.

Verdict: a theatrical shortfall, not a proven total-project loss

On the box-office question, Melania substantially under-recovered against the reported $75 million rights-and-marketing outlay: its theatrical gross was more than $16.6 million according to Amazon. That supports calling the theatrical outcome a bust relative to that reported spend, while avoiding the misleading claim that the gross-to-spend comparison proves a $58 million loss. The broader business outcome remains unresolved because the available sources do not show what Amazon received from theaters and Prime Video or how it valued any strategic benefits.
