Maxpay vs Adyen: Which Payment Provider Fits Your Business?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Adyen is the stronger default for established businesses that need a documented global payments platform, online and in-person acceptance, marketplace tools, or integrated risk controls. Maxpay may suit merchants looking for a more tailored acquiring arrangement, multiple merchant accounts, or hands-on onboarding—but only if its underwriting, terms, and payment-method coverage fit their business. They overlap in online payment acceptance, but they are not identical products. Maxpay’s current rates are not publicly displayed in the reviewed materials, so a fair price comparison requires a merchant-specific quote.

Maxpay vs Adyen at a glance

What matters Maxpay Adyen
Provider scope Merchant-account, acquiring, gateway, and payment services; specific arrangements depend on underwriting and contracting. Publicly described as a platform combining gateway, processing, acquiring, risk, payment methods, payouts, and settlement.
Best fit Merchants evaluating tailored acquiring, multiple MIDs, or a sales-led relationship. Established or scaling businesses needing broad documented capabilities across markets or channels.
Payment-method breadth Maxpay advertises more than 100 local payment options; availability for an individual merchant is not established by the headline count. Maxpay payment methods Adyen advertises more than 100 methods globally; availability depends on merchant, shopper, currency, and configuration. Adyen acceptance
In-person payments Not established in the reviewed public materials. Supported, alongside online and in-app payments; product availability varies by market. Adyen acceptance
Marketplace product Reviewed sources do not establish a comparable documented marketplace product. Documented platform and marketplace features include seller onboarding, split payments, and payouts. Adyen marketplaces
Public pricing Current rates are not publicly displayed in the reviewed sources; request a quote. Public model: fixed processing fee plus a payment-method fee; other products are priced separately. Adyen pricing
Integration approach Hosted payment pages and host-to-host integration are documented, as are payout and query APIs. Maxpay documentation Drop-in, Components, API-only, and hosted checkout options are documented. Adyen online payments

These are not interchangeable descriptions of a single “gateway.” Confirm which entity underwrites and acquires your transactions, what services are included, and which terms apply to your legal entity.

What Maxpay offers—and what to verify

Maxpay describes merchant-account and gateway services, including hosted payment pages, host-to-host integrations, subscriptions and rebilling, payout APIs, and query-on-demand APIs. It advertises multiple merchant accounts, more than 30 partner banks, and dedicated account management. Those partner-bank and payment-method counts are Maxpay’s own claims, not confirmation that a particular bank, MID, or method will be available to your business. Maxpay payment methods Maxpay documentation

This model may be worth evaluating if your business needs a merchant account and gateway package, several processing relationships, or an individually reviewed arrangement. It does not establish that Maxpay accepts every high-risk category or guarantees approval. Ask for written confirmation of acceptance for your exact business model, products, countries, and traffic sources.

Maxpay’s published onboarding description includes a compliance review, bank submission, merchant-account opening, and technical integration. Its help center says prospective merchants should provide details such as their website, company and incorporation countries, expected volume, and chargeback rate. This is a review process, not a guarantee of approval or a published timetable. Maxpay onboarding information

What Adyen offers

Adyen presents a broader, more unified platform: online, in-app, recurring, pay-by-link, and in-person acceptance; payment processing and acquiring; risk and authentication; and settlement and reporting. It advertises acceptance in almost 100 countries, but that does not mean every merchant can onboard in every country, use local acquiring everywhere, or settle in every currency. Adyen acceptance Adyen online payments

For marketplaces and platforms, Adyen documents seller verification and onboarding, split payments, payouts, risk controls, and reporting. Country support and regulatory requirements vary, so a platform should confirm its proposed funds flow and responsibilities directly. Adyen marketplaces Adyen for platforms

Pricing: compare the complete cost, not one rate

Adyen’s public pricing model

Adyen’s public pricing page describes a fixed processing fee for each transaction plus a separate fee determined by the payment method. It shows no setup or monthly fee for the standard pricing model; additional products are priced separately. Some payment methods use interchange-plus pricing, and rates vary with method, country, currency, and transaction type. The page displays a $0.13 processing component in many examples, but that is only one part of the cost—not the complete card-processing price. Check the current page and your contract for the applicable amount and fees. Adyen pricing

Maxpay’s quote-based pricing

The reviewed Maxpay materials do not display a comparable current public rate card. Maxpay directs prospective merchants to contact it for processing rates and requests business and volume information. Do not infer a rate, reserve, or payout schedule from a generic feature page; ask for a written offer based on your actual transaction profile. Use one quote worksheet for both providers

Send both providers the same assumptions: monthly volume, average ticket, countries and currencies, card and alternative-method shares, recurring-payment share, refunds, chargebacks, and expected settlement currency. Then compare each applicable item:

  • Percentage processing and fixed per-transaction fees, plus interchange and scheme fees where applicable.
  • Alternative-payment-method fees, cross-border surcharges, and currency-conversion spreads.
  • Refund charges and whether the original processing fee is returned; chargeback fees and dispute-related costs.
  • Rolling or upfront reserves, minimum monthly billing, and any gateway, account, or payout fees.
  • Settlement timing, payout currency, and any conversion or payout charges.
  • Fraud-screening, premium support, PCI, tokenization, or data-storage charges.
  • Marketplace split-payment or seller-payout charges, and in-person terminal or hardware costs if needed.
  • Contract term, termination fees, suspension rights, reserve-release terms, and data or token migration support.

For a useful hypothetical comparison, model 1,000 monthly transactions at a $100 average ticket, with 5% international cards, 10% refunds, a 0.5% chargeback rate, and 10% alternative payment methods. These are example assumptions, not provider performance or pricing data. Insert each provider’s written rates and contractual terms; without Maxpay’s quote and your method mix, there is no supported winner on cost.

Payment methods, subscriptions, and checkout

Both providers advertise broad payment-method coverage. Maxpay lists major card brands and says it offers more than 100 local options; its materials also document alternative methods and subscription or rebilling capabilities. Adyen advertises more than 100 methods, including cards, wallets, local methods, and buy-now-pay-later options. Neither headline count guarantees availability for a particular merchant, market, currency, or industry. Request a method-by-method matrix for your target shoppers and legal entities. For subscriptions, verify how the chosen integration handles stored-payment tokens, recurring transaction indicators, retry logic, trial-to-paid transitions, cancellations, refunds, and 3D Secure. Confirm whether tokens can be migrated if you change providers. Maxpay documents subscription and rebilling flows; Adyen supports recurring payments. The exact functions available depend on configuration and contract. Maxpay documentation Adyen online payments

Integration and developer experience

Maxpay integration

Maxpay documents hosted payment pages, host-to-host integration, payout and query-on-demand APIs, and callback and redirect URLs. Its hosted-page workflow includes creating an application, configuring a product, activating payment methods, and setting callback and redirect URLs. Confirm the current portal steps and test the flows your business needs. Maxpay documentation

  • No hidden fees and no long-term contracts
  • Mobile card reader that accepts payments anywhere & anytime

Adyen integration

Adyen documents Drop-in, Components, API-only, and hosted checkout approaches, along with APIs for payment modifications and documentation for webhooks and other payment flows. This gives engineering teams a more extensively documented public starting point, though the right implementation still depends on checkout requirements, integration effort, and the merchant’s technical resources. Adyen online payments Adyen standard integration Adyen API Explorer

Before selecting either provider, test the complete lifecycle in a sandbox or agreed test environment: authorization, 3D Secure, failed payments, retries, webhooks, partial capture, refunds, reconciliation exports, and duplicate-request handling. Ask about webhook retries and replay, API versioning, token migration, plugin support, and developer escalation. Do not assume a hosted checkout removes every PCI responsibility; confirm the applicable requirements with your assessor or compliance adviser.

Underwriting, risk, and chargebacks

Ask each provider to confirm acceptance for your exact business category and transaction flows. Get the contracting legal entity and acquiring arrangement in writing, along with supported countries, prohibited activities, reserve percentage and duration, payout timing, chargeback thresholds, and what happens to funds during a risk investigation. Also clarify recurring-payment or high-ticket restrictions, dispute handling, suspension and termination rights, and whether customer payment data can move with you.

Maxpay advertises chargeback tracking, Ethoca Alerts, Visa Rapid Dispute Resolution through Verifi, Covery-related services, and in-house compliance and risk support. These are advertised services; confirm which are available, optional, bundled, and charged for in your proposal. Maxpay business plans

Adyen documents its Protect risk engine, risk rules, dynamic 3D Secure, and dispute-management workflows. More extensive public documentation does not establish better fraud or authorization results for your traffic; measure outcomes with a controlled, comparable transaction mix and verify any product charges. Settlement and cash flow

Adyen says payout amounts are net of costs such as refunds, chargebacks, and transaction costs. Payout frequency can be configured for merchant accounts; arrival may take up to two days depending on currencies and banks. Adyen also describes payouts in different currencies and, in some cases, like-for-like settlement without conversion. Confirm the schedule, eligible currencies, and fees for your account. The reviewed Maxpay sources do not provide a sufficiently detailed current public schedule for payout timing, reserve release, settlement currencies, or payout fees. Obtain those terms in the written quote and merchant agreement. For cash-flow-sensitive businesses, calculate the cost of payout delay and reserves alongside transaction fees.

Which provider fits your business?

International e-commerce or a growing enterprise

Adyen is the stronger starting point if you need many documented payment methods, online and in-person options, risk tools, and reporting within one platform. Check onboarding eligibility and the country-specific price and method details before committing.

Omnichannel retail

Adyen is the clearer candidate when stores, web, and apps need to operate through a unified payments setup. The reviewed Maxpay material does not establish an equivalent public in-person or unified-commerce offer.

Marketplace or platform

Start with Adyen’s documented platforms product if seller onboarding, verification, split payments, and managed payouts are central requirements. Consider Maxpay only if it can document an equivalent funds flow, seller verification process, responsibilities, and country support in writing.

Customized acquiring or multiple merchant accounts

Maxpay may merit a conversation if you want a sales-led review, multiple MIDs, or a tailored acquiring arrangement. Confirm which acquiring entities and banks would serve your business and whether the resulting terms meet your needs.

Small or straightforward domestic merchant

Either provider could be more complex than necessary if you only need basic local card acceptance. Compare them with simpler payment-service-provider options on onboarding effort, total fees, settlement, support, and the features you will actually use; this comparison does not establish current terms for other providers.

High-risk or restricted business

Do not shortlist on a general “global” or “alternative payments” claim alone. Both providers must confirm in writing that they accept your specific category, products, geographies, sales channels, and recurring flows, and disclose reserve, termination, and payout terms.

Questions to send before signing

  1. Which legal entity will contract with us, and who underwrites and acquires our transactions?
  2. Do you accept our exact business category, MCC, products, traffic sources, and target countries?
  3. Which payment methods, currencies, and acquiring countries are enabled for our account?
  4. What are all transaction, cross-border, FX, refund, chargeback, payout, gateway, and optional-product fees?
  5. Will you require a rolling or upfront reserve? What are the percentage, duration, release rules, and review conditions?
  6. What is the settlement schedule, cutoff, payout currency, and expected arrival time for each destination bank?
  7. How are disputes handled, and which alert, 3DS, fraud, and risk services are included or separately priced?
  8. How do recurring payments, token storage, retries, refunds, partial captures, and stored-credential indicators work?
  9. For a platform, how do seller verification, split payments, fund handling, refunds, and payout liability work?
  10. What data, tokens, transaction history, and dispute records can we export if we leave, and are there termination charges?

When to compare alternatives

If neither provider fits your size, geography, risk profile, or implementation capacity, investigate alternatives such as Stripe, Checkout.com, Worldpay, Nuvei, Mollie, or PayPal/Braintree. Their suitability, current prices, country support, and underwriting terms require separate verification; do not assume a provider’s general market reputation answers those questions for your business.
