The exact controls vary by device, country, category and account.
Define what you will accept before searching
Write down the non-negotiables first: the item, model or type, size or compatibility, maximum total budget, maximum travel distance, acceptable condition and whether shipping is acceptable. Also decide which attributes are flexible. This prevents an attractive but unsuitable listing from dictating your search.
Step 1: Start with useful keywords
Begin with the most recognizable product name rather than a long sentence. A practical pattern is [item] + [type/model/material] + [size or compatibility].

Seller-created titles are inconsistent, so run a second search using synonyms, abbreviations and the model number separately.

For electronics, appliances, tools and replacement parts, an exact model number can be highly selective. If it returns nothing, remove the model number and search the brand, generic product or category instead. Step 2: Use categories when titles are unreliable
Open Marketplace, choose a relevant category, enter a keyword if the category allows it, then apply location, distance, price and condition controls. Category browsing is useful when you know the kind of item but not the seller’s terminology.
Categories are not perfect. A seller can choose a neighboring or incorrect category, and a narrow category can hide a relevant listing. If results look unusually thin, repeat the search without the category and compare the two result sets.
Step 3: Set location and distance
Set the location near the place where pickup will actually happen, not merely your home address. Meta says Marketplace location can use a town or city, neighborhood, ZIP or postal code, or a map-selected point. On desktop, click the current location on the right side of Marketplace, enter a location or select one on the map, then choose the available distance control: Change the location of your Facebook Marketplace listings.

- Start with the smallest radius that could realistically contain the item.
- Run the search again after changing the location; do not assume old results have updated.
- Expand the radius only when supply is too limited.
- Confirm the seller’s general pickup area before traveling. A displayed city is not necessarily an exact meeting address.
There is no single permanent set of radius choices for every device, region or account, so use the options shown in your interface.
Step 4: Apply filters progressively
Meta’s filter availability and labels vary. Add controls one at a time so you can tell which one removed useful inventory.
- Search the item name alone.
- Add location and distance.
- Set a realistic price range.
- Choose condition if condition materially affects value.
- Add one product-specific requirement, such as model, material, size or compatibility.
Price should reflect the likely total cost, including missing accessories, assembly, delivery or travel. Condition labels are seller-selected and may not match your standard. Availability or listing-status filters are useful only when your current interface exposes them.
Do not stack every filter immediately. Sellers may omit a model number, use a generic title such as “moving sale,” list a bundle under another category or choose an approximate location. Three results can be precise while still missing the best listing.

Step 5: Sort for your buying priority
After searching, open Sort by where available. Meta documents Suggested, Distance and Date listed; the mobile interface may call the last option New listings. See Sort by distance or new listings on Facebook Marketplace.

Meta states that distance and new-listing sorting is available in the iOS and Android apps but not Facebook Lite: mobile and Lite sorting details.
Step 6: Save or monitor the search
After running a search, look for a save, bell or saved-search control. Meta’s notification settings include a saved searches category, but the creation control and availability are not identical for every account.
On mobile, Meta documents: Menu → Marketplace → Marketplace profile → Settings → Notifications, then choose a category and toggle notifications. On desktop, use Profile picture → Settings & privacy → Settings → Notifications → Marketplace. Sources: mobile notification settings and desktop notification settings.

If no save control or alert appears, manually rerun the search and sort by Date listed/New listings. Notifications are not guaranteed to arrive immediately or to include every matching listing.
Step 7: Fix empty or overcrowded results

| Still no results | Replace the brand-specific term with a generic term and try synonyms. |
| Too many results | Add model, generation, size, material, compatibility or price. |
| Results are far away | Reset the location and reduce the distance. |
| Old listings dominate | Sort by Date listed/New listings and refresh. |
| Relevant items are missing | Search neighboring categories, generic titles and nearby cities separately. |
| Search keeps resetting | Switch between the app and desktop site, then reapply filters one at a time. |
Examples of deliberate broadening:

An empty result set shows that the current wording or filters found nothing; it does not prove the item is unavailable. Marketplace documents positive search and filtering, not a universal Boolean or exclusion-keyword system.
Step 8: Compare the shortlist, not just the headline price
- Calculate total cost, including travel, delivery, accessories and assembly.
- Confirm the exact model, capacity, compatibility and included parts.
- Look for clear photos of labels, defects and all sides of the item.
- Check listing age and ask whether the item is still available.
- Review the seller’s ratings and reviews, friends in common, other listings and Marketplace activity where shown.
- Ask whether you can inspect and test the item before paying.

Use a message that tests the details:
Hi, is this still available? I’m interested in the [exact item/model]. Does it include [missing accessory], and are there any defects not shown in the photos? I can meet in [general area] on [day/time window].
This confirms you read the listing, surfaces missing parts and defects, and moves toward a practical arrangement without disclosing unnecessary personal information.
Safety checks after narrowing the search
Relevance does not establish authenticity or safety. Be especially cautious when a rare item is dramatically underpriced or a seller creates urgency. Compare similar listings, request current specific photos, confirm ownership and model details, and inspect before payment.
- Keep early communication in Facebook or Messenger.
- Do not follow links requesting Facebook, bank or payment credentials.
- Ignore fake payment screenshots and emails; verify funds in your own account.
- Do not send deposits, gift cards or overpayments to “release” an item.
- Arrange a public meeting and avoid sharing unnecessary personal details.

Local pickup is usually practical for furniture, appliances, exercise equipment, building materials and low-value items that should be tested. Eligible onsite checkout purchases may have platform protections, but cash and other person-to-person transactions do not automatically qualify. Shipping and checkout depend on location and listing eligibility; Meta’s checkout information is at Buy something with checkout and delivery on Facebook Marketplace and Buy something with checkout and shipping on Facebook Marketplace.
When Marketplace or its controls are missing
- Use the main Facebook profile rather than an additional profile.
- Update the app and try both the mobile app and desktop website.
- Check whether Marketplace is supported in your country.
- Review age, identity-verification or account-restriction prompts.
- If filters or sorting are absent, search first and then look for Filters, Location, Distance or Sort by.
- Do not pay a third party promising to “unlock” Marketplace.
Meta says Marketplace is generally for adults in supported countries, but new or inactive accounts, additional profiles and policy restrictions can limit access: Who can use Facebook Marketplace.
