Mastercard Helped Explain Why Samsung Moved Away From MST—But It Didn’t Order Samsung to Kill It

Mastercard’s magnetic-stripe phaseout weakened the case for Samsung’s MST, but no public evidence shows Mastercard ordered Samsung to remove it. Here’s what changed and what Galaxy users and merchants should know.

Mastercard did not publicly announce that it ordered Samsung to remove Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST). The better-supported explanation is strategic: MST was designed to imitate a magnetic-stripe swipe, while Mastercard and the wider payments industry were retiring magnetic stripes in favor of EMV chips and NFC contactless payments. As NFC terminals became more common, Samsung had less reason to keep the specialized hardware in newer phones.

Samsung launched Samsung Pay with both MST and NFC because MST could reach many older swipe terminals. Samsung later shifted newer devices toward NFC-only payments, but support remains dependent on the exact Galaxy model, market, carrier and firmware.

What MST did in Samsung Pay

MST stood for Magnetic Secure Transmission. A compatible Galaxy phone generated a magnetic signal that many traditional card readers interpreted like a physical magnetic-stripe swipe. Samsung described the technology as emulating a card swipe and working alongside NFC, with the phone selecting the appropriate method for the reader.

MST and NFC solved different acceptance problems:

Feature MST NFC
Reader Magnetic-stripe reader Contactless NFC reader
Phone behavior Emulates a swipe signal Communicates by radio with the terminal
Original advantage Worked with many older terminals lacking contactless Uses the modern contactless payment path
Long-term direction Declining legacy infrastructure EMV/contactless ecosystem
Limitation Requires MST hardware and a reader that still accepts magstripe transactions Requires an NFC-enabled terminal

Samsung’s 2015 explanation of the technology is available at Samsung Newsroom.

Why users valued MST

When Samsung Pay launched in 2015, contactless terminals were not yet universal, particularly in the United States. Many merchants still had readers designed primarily for card swipes. MST gave Samsung Pay a broader potential acceptance footprint than an NFC-only wallet, because a phone could sometimes pay without the merchant first installing NFC equipment.

Samsung said at launch that Samsung Pay could work at approximately 90% of U.S. retailers, based on its own research. That was a historical marketing claim, not a current acceptance rate or guarantee.

What Mastercard actually announced

Mastercard’s plan concerned the magnetic stripes on newly issued physical Mastercard cards. It did not automatically switch off MST in every Samsung phone, and it was not the same thing as removing NFC or EMV chip payments.

Contemporary reporting described the following timetable:

Did Mastercard force Samsung to remove MST?

No public evidence in the available contemporary reporting establishes that Mastercard instructed Samsung to remove MST. The connection is indirect but commercially logical:

  1. MST depended on magnetic-stripe readers remaining useful.
  2. Card networks and merchants were moving toward EMV chip and NFC contactless acceptance.
  3. Newer terminals increasingly provided a native contactless transaction path.
  4. Maintaining MST hardware, certification and compatibility became less valuable as that transition progressed.

In other words, Mastercard’s announcement helped explain the industry trend that weakened MST’s rationale. It did not prove a corporate order, a legal ban or an immediate shutdown.

When Samsung moved away from MST

2015: Samsung Pay launches with both systems

Samsung introduced MST and NFC as complementary technologies, specifically to bridge the gap between older swipe readers and newer contactless terminals.

Before 2021: Some watches omit MST

Contemporary reporting said Samsung had already released recent smartwatches without MST.

2021: Galaxy S21 moves to NFC-only payments

Reporting in 2021 identified the Galaxy S21 series as relying on NFC rather than MST for Samsung Pay. That timing overlapped with Mastercard’s magnetic-stripe announcement, but overlap is not proof that Mastercard alone caused Samsung’s hardware decision.

2022 onward: Samsung Pay becomes Samsung Wallet branding

Samsung folded the experience into Samsung Wallet branding. Features still vary by country, device model, carrier and firmware, as Samsung explains in its current compatibility documentation.

Does Samsung Wallet still support MST?

There is no accurate universal yes-or-no answer. Samsung’s U.S. troubleshooting page still discusses both NFC and MST readers and provides separate placement guidance, so MST remains relevant to some older supported devices. That documentation does not mean every current Galaxy phone contains MST hardware.

For a specific phone, check the exact regional model’s specifications and Samsung’s support information. Do not infer hardware support merely from the presence of the Samsung Wallet app. Card issuer support, firmware, carrier and country can also affect whether a card can be added or used.

A card with no physical stripe does not by itself disable an MST-capable phone. MST is the phone’s transmission method; token provisioning, issuer rules, terminal configuration and wallet support determine whether a transaction succeeds.

Why NFC became the logical successor

NFC is the native interface built into modern contactless terminals and aligns with EMV contactless payment infrastructure. It does not depend on a magnetic reader head or on making a phone imitate a legacy swipe. The shift also fits terminal upgrades, contactless acceptance and the broader retirement of magnetic-stripe transactions.

EMV chip and contactless payments generally support stronger dynamic authentication than traditional static magnetic-stripe acceptance. That does not make every NFC transaction automatically safe or every MST transaction fraudulent; security depends on the wallet, token, issuer, terminal and transaction environment.

What happens at a magstripe-only merchant?

An NFC-only Galaxy phone cannot create MST capability for a reader that lacks NFC. Samsung says Wallet will not work with a reader supporting neither NFC nor MST and identifies some gas pumps, transit machines and vending machines as possible problem locations. Practical alternatives are:

  • Insert a physical chip card.
  • Swipe a physical card if the merchant still permits it.
  • Try another register or terminal with the contactless symbol.
  • Use another payment method.

At unattended locations, a physical card is often the simplest fallback because equipment may have older hardware or stricter certification requirements.

Contactless payment troubleshooting

  1. Look for the contactless symbol. A terminal that lacks NFC may not accept an NFC-only phone.
  2. Turn on NFC. On many U.S. Galaxy phones, go to Settings → Connections → NFC and contactless payments.
  3. Select the payment service. Confirm Samsung Pay or Samsung Wallet is the selected contactless payment service.
  4. Use the correct antenna area. Hold the phone near the terminal’s NFC target, not necessarily over the old swipe slot.
  5. Remove interference. A thick or magnetic case can affect the signal.
  6. Check connectivity. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance includes network-related errors; follow the app’s prompt if one appears.
  7. Try another terminal. The first reader may be misconfigured or not enabled for mobile contactless payments.
  8. Contact the issuer for a decline. If the terminal successfully reads the phone but the transaction is declined, the card issuer or account—not NFC positioning—may be responsible.

Samsung’s detailed guidance is available at NFC/MST troubleshooting and contactless-payment settings.

What this means for people choosing a Samsung phone

  • Prioritize NFC support and Samsung Wallet availability in your country.
  • Confirm that your bank and card type are supported.
  • Consider whether the places you regularly pay have contactless-capable terminals.
  • If you depend on old pumps, vending machines or transit readers, keep a physical chip card or another fallback.
  • Do not buy an old MST-capable phone solely for acceptance. Check battery condition, security-update status, software support and card compatibility first.

What merchants should replace

The sensible long-term replacement for MST-era assumptions is a certified terminal supporting:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • EMV chip cards
  • NFC/contactless payments
  • The merchant’s processor and payment network requirements
  • Required PIN, signature, tipping, transit or unattended-payment functions

Replacing terminals can involve hardware cost, POS integration, receipts, refunds, reporting and processor changes. Unattended environments such as fuel pumps and vending machines may require additional certification. Merchants should also compare offline-payment behavior, customer-facing displays, software fees, transaction rates, warranties and data-export options.

Examples of NFC-capable payment platforms include Square Terminal, the Square Reader for contactless and chip, Stripe Terminal, Shopify POS and Clover. Fit depends on the existing POS, processor, integration needs and country; verify current pricing and terms directly with each provider.

What the headline gets wrong

  • “Mastercard forced Samsung to kill MST.” The available evidence supports an industry explanation, not a confirmed order.
  • “Mastercard’s stripe retirement shut off MST.” Card-stripe retirement and phone-side MST are related but separate technologies.
  • “MST is completely dead.” Older devices and Samsung support pages still reference it.
  • “Every post-S21 Samsung phone is NFC-only.” Support must be checked by exact model and market.
  • “MST was simply unsafe.” The more accurate point is that modern EMV/contactless infrastructure generally offers stronger authentication and better strategic alignment.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Mastercard did not directly kill Samsung’s MST. Its magnetic-stripe retirement signaled that the legacy system MST imitated was disappearing, while Samsung independently moved newer hardware toward NFC. Older MST-capable phones may still work where supported, but an NFC-only phone cannot replace a magstripe-only terminal.
