Who was Mark Hurd?
Hurd was an American technology-company executive whose career spanned sales, operations and corporate leadership. He spent 25 years at National Cash Register (NCR), led Hewlett-Packard (HP) as CEO and president, and later joined Oracle, where he served as co-president and then co-CEO alongside Safra Catz.
He graduated from Baylor University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1979. He joined NCR in 1980 as a junior sales representative. HP’s 2009 biography says he held management, operations, sales and marketing roles there before becoming chief operating officer in 2002 and CEO in 2003. HP’s 2009 biography of Hurd is the company’s own account of his career and performance, rather than an independent assessment.
How did his career move from NCR to HP?
HP hired Hurd as CEO and president in early 2005, then named him chairman in September 2006. HP’s biography said he focused the company on enterprise data-center architecture and services, connected mobile experiences, and digital imaging and printing.

That biography credited Hurd with sharpening HP’s priorities and improving operating efficiency. It reported that revenue rose from $80 billion in fiscal 2004 to $118.4 billion in fiscal 2008, while earnings per share more than doubled. Those figures and the credit for improvement reflect HP’s own 2009 presentation of its results during his tenure.
A contemporaneous Bloomberg report, republished by the Los Angeles Times on October 18, 2019, described a broader record of rising profits and share value alongside substantial workforce reductions. It reported that HP profit rose for 22 consecutive quarters during Hurd’s tenure, revenue increased about 60%, and the stock price doubled, citing Bloomberg data. The same report described Hurd as a cost cutter: thousands of workers were dismissed after he became CEO, with further layoffs following HP’s 2008 acquisition of EDS. Some investors disliked that approach. The financial measures and workforce consequences are different parts of the record; neither alone captures the full effect of his leadership.

Why did Mark Hurd leave HP?
Hurd resigned from HP in 2010 after the company determined that he had violated its standards by filing inaccurate expense reports to conceal a personal relationship with a contractor, according to the contemporaneous Bloomberg report. That is the report’s account of HP’s determination; it should not be read as a court finding.
Hurd rejected the idea that his subsequent role at Oracle was a form of “redemption.” In a written response reproduced by Fortune writer Adam Lashinsky in 2015, he said: “While I appreciate the sentiment, I don’t think what I’m doing at Oracle has anything to do with redemption. I am thrilled to be at Oracle working with our team.” Lashinsky presented the exchange within a first-person remembrance, not as an independent evaluation of Hurd’s record. Fortune’s remembrance by Adam Lashinsky also describes Hurd as a business-focused executive who used charts and closely tracked his time. Lashinsky notes a criticism of Hurd’s reputation: he was often seen as a strong salesperson and operator, but not a technological visionary.
What did Hurd do at Oracle?
Hurd joined Oracle as co-president in 2010 and later became co-CEO with Safra Catz. The 2019 report described a division of responsibilities: Hurd handled sales, marketing, press and investor relations, while Catz oversaw finance and legal matters.
Oracle was shifting from a business centered on software licensing toward cloud computing. The report characterized Hurd as a key driver of that transition and cited the 2016 acquisition of NetSuite, a cloud software company, as one part of the strategy. Bloomberg reported the purchase price as $9.3 billion. That figure describes the reported acquisition price; it does not by itself measure the success of Oracle’s broader cloud transition.

What is known about his death?
Hurd died on October 18, 2019, aged 62. The contemporaneous report said Oracle had not disclosed a cause. It also reported that he had taken an unspecified health-related leave beginning in September 2019; that information does not establish a cause of death.
In a statement reproduced by the Los Angeles Times, Ellison said: “Mark was my close and irreplaceable friend, and trusted colleague. Oracle has lost a brilliant and beloved leader who personally touched the lives of so many of us during his decade at Oracle.” The statement reflects Ellison’s personal tribute and Oracle’s loss, alongside the more contested questions about Hurd’s management legacy.
