Elon Musk’s alliance with Donald Trump made Tesla more politically divisive: Democrats’ views of the brand worsened as the alliance grew, while Republicans’ views initially improved. A 2026 study finds that the divide shifted again after the relationship ruptured, but it does not show that the change is permanent—or that politics alone caused Tesla’s sales results. The better-supported conclusion is that Tesla’s political meaning changed, while the long-term effect on EV buying remains unsettled.
How Musk’s alliance with Trump changed Tesla’s political meaning
Musk endorsed Trump on July 13, 2024, after the assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania. He then advocated for Trump, supported his campaign and later headed the Department of Government Efficiency in Trump’s second administration. Those steps made Musk’s political identity harder to separate from Tesla in public discussion, even though a company and its CEO are not the same thing.
In a 2026 article in Political Behavior, Kyle Endres, Donald P. Green and Costas Panagopoulos analyzed daily brand-tracking data from January 1, 2022, through July 7, 2025. They tracked Tesla’s brand image, purchase consideration and appeal as an employer. Their central finding is a widening partisan gap: Democrats rated Tesla less favorably as Musk’s alliance with Trump strengthened, while Republicans’ views generally warmed. After the alliance broke down in spring and summer 2025, Republicans’ views showed signs of deteriorating and Democrats’ prior decline appeared to level off.
What the evidence says about Tesla buyers and sales
Reported customer loyalty fell, then partly recovered
Reuters, citing S&P Global Mobility vehicle-registration data, reported a sharp change in U.S. Tesla customer loyalty among Tesla-owning households in the market for a new vehicle. The series covers three specific months, not a current or continuous measure:

The timing overlaps with Musk’s political activity, but timing alone cannot establish why owners switched or stayed. Loyalty figures also do not tell us whether a particular buyer rejected Tesla for political reasons, chose another vehicle for practical reasons or delayed a purchase.
Sales declines had more than one plausible explanation
The 2026 study reports that Tesla’s worldwide sales declined 1.1% year over year in 2024, the company’s first annual decline in a dozen years. That figure describes the change, not its cause. The study’s analysis of attitudes is observational, and the authors acknowledge the possibility of unobserved confounders, even as they compare Tesla with other automotive brands and examine stock-price movements as alternative explanations.

In a separate, market-specific example, the Associated Press reported that Tesla sales in Europe fell 45% in January 2025, according to Jato Dynamics, while overall EV sales rose. Analysts cited both Musk’s politics and other possible factors, including the Model Y update cycle and stronger competition; they cautioned that it was too early to determine how much politics explained. A one-month European result should not be treated as a current sales figure or as proof of a single cause.
EV politics existed before Musk’s Trump endorsement
Partisan differences around electric vehicles did not begin with the Tesla dispute. A Pew Research Center survey of 8,638 U.S. adults, fielded May 13–19, 2024—before Musk endorsed Trump—found that 29% said they would seriously consider buying an EV. It is a useful pre-alliance baseline, not a measure of how attitudes changed afterward.

These are people’s reported beliefs, not independent measurements of vehicle reliability, ownership cost or charging capacity. They show why a political argument about EVs can sit alongside ordinary household concerns: price, confidence in charging access and perceptions of reliability. A buyer’s political identity does not answer whether a particular vehicle suits their budget or driving needs.
Why Musk’s politics and Tesla’s business interests can diverge
Reuters reported in August 2024 that Tesla continued lobbying for policies supportive of EVs while Musk backed Trump, whose campaign opposed EV mandates and subsidies. The report described Tesla’s previous policy advocacy and its use of government programs and regulatory credits. That is a documented tension between the company’s commercial interests and its CEO’s political alignment; it does not mean every Tesla owner shares either position.

For consumers, the distinction matters because a public political stance is not the same as a vehicle’s purchase price, operating costs, charging compatibility or suitability for a household. The available findings do not provide a current model-by-model comparison on those factors, so a political story cannot substitute for checking the numbers for a specific purchase.

It is too soon to say. Endres, Green and Panagopoulos write: “It remains to be seen whether these perceptions return to their pre-2024 levels if future interactions between Musk and Trump remain limited.” Their data extend through July 7, 2025, and capture attitudes during an unusually visible political alignment and its breakdown. They do not establish how long those attitudes will last or whether the same partisan pattern applies to EV brands beyond Tesla.

So the headline’s “never be the same again” works as a description of a consequential politicization, not as a demonstrated prediction that Tesla’s reputation—or the politics of EVs—can never change again. The evidence shows that brand perceptions can move with political events; it does not settle what comes next.
