Official warnings document serious hazards in particular products, including a named power bank, a counterfeit adapter, and incompatible micromobility chargers—but they do not establish that China-made technology as a whole is less safe. When shopping for cheaper tech, check the exact model, seller, documentation, and charger compatibility rather than judging by country of origin or price alone.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
Some specific China-manufactured products have been linked to fire, burn, and electric-shock warnings. Those are product-specific alerts, not a measure of the safety of all goods made in China. Likewise, an EU compliance campaign found problems among sampled electronic products, but its published summary does not say that the products were all made in China.
In its JACOP 2025 campaign, the European Commission reported that 91 of 173 sampled electronic products—53%—failed laboratory tests and/or checks of markings and documentation. This was a selected market-surveillance sample, not an estimate of the failure rate for electronics generally. In that same campaign sample, elevated lead and cadmium were detected at solder points in 82 products, and plasticisers were found in cable, cord, or plug insulation or sleeves in 51. The Commission also found marking or documentation problems in 41 products (24%). The Commission’s campaign results show why paperwork and product checks matter, but they do not support a country-wide conclusion.
Price is not a safety test either. The Commission advises consumers to avoid suspiciously cheap electronics, but the campaign was not a controlled comparison of low- and high-priced products. A very low price is a reason to look more carefully at the seller and documentation—not proof that an item is unsafe.

Where cheaper tech can present specific risks
Lithium-ion batteries and power banks
On May 15, 2025, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warned about Yiisonger KT-D007 power banks, which were manufactured in China. The agency said their lithium-ion batteries could overheat and ignite. It had received 79 reports of units exploding, igniting, or swelling, including a serious fire that caused $15 million in property damage. About 93,000 units were sold on Amazon from April 2022 to February 2025. Those figures refer to that model only, not to power banks as a category. A separate CPSC alert dated November 14, 2025, covers HALO Bolt ACDC 58830 portable chargers manufactured in or before December 2019. The agency reported fires, burn injuries, and property damage, and noted that battery age can contribute to susceptibility. This warning is limited to the named model and manufacturing period; it is another reason to check a product’s age and recall status, not a reason to infer that all products from a country share the same defect. Chargers that fit but are not compatible
A plug that fits is not proof that a charger is electrically compatible. For e-bikes, e-scooters, hoverboards, and e-unicycles, the CPSC advises using the supplied charger or asking the device maker about a replacement that is compatible, tested, and approved for that device. The agency reported 156 fire and thermal incident reports involving “universal” micromobility chargers between January 1, 2023, and May 16, 2024; this is not a count of every charger incident. Counterfeit or non-compliant adapters
The UK Office for Product Safety and Standards reported a counterfeit Apple-branded USB-C adapter, model A1696, originating in China. It identified a serious fire and electric-shock risk: the plug pins did not meet BS 1363 dimensional requirements and did not connect securely. Required instructions and markings were also missing, and the import was rejected at the border. This is evidence about a counterfeit, non-compliant adapter—not genuine Apple products or all adapters made in China. Read the UK product-safety report.

Checks to make before buying electronics
- Search the exact model in an official alert database. Match the model number, not just the brand or product type. In the EU, the European Commission describes Safety Gate as the rapid alert system for dangerous non-food products. In the United States, check the CPSC’s recalls and safety information; in the UK, consult the relevant product-safety alerts. A search by model can reveal a warning that a general search for a brand misses.
- Check who is selling it and who is responsible for it. Look for a clearly identified seller or supplier, manufacturer details, and a way to contact them. For online purchases in the EU, the Commission recommends checking whether the seller or supplier has an EU address. An anonymous listing or unclear chain of responsibility makes it harder to verify a product or get support.
- Read the documentation and inspect the markings. Check that the model and manufacturer information are consistent across the listing, product, and documentation. For EU purchases, the Commission warns that imitations of the CE conformity mark are not official CE markings. A mark on its own is not a guarantee of overall product quality; consider it alongside the applicable documentation and other checks.
- For chargers, verify the exact device match. Use the supplied charger where possible. Before buying a replacement, confirm with the device maker that it is compatible with the exact product and has been tested or approved for it. Do not rely on the connector’s shape or the word “universal.”
- Consider support and recourse. Check the seller’s return terms, warranty, and support arrangements before paying. If the product has a safety issue, clear seller and manufacturer details can help you identify whom to contact and what remedies may be available.
- Treat an unusually low price as a prompt to verify, not a verdict. Compare the listing’s seller identity, product details, and documentation with the manufacturer’s information. A low price alone cannot establish that a product is unsafe.
What to do if you own a product under warning
Follow the regulator’s instructions for the exact model. For the Yiisonger KT-D007, the CPSC advised consumers to stop using the power bank immediately and dispose of it as hazardous waste—not in ordinary trash or curbside recycling. Do not assume a lithium-ion battery under a fire warning can go through household recycling; use the disposal route specified in the alert. For other products, check the relevant notice for stop-use, return, repair, or disposal instructions. The Yiisonger notice and HALO notice address different products, so follow the instructions for the one you have.

Country of origin can be useful context about a supply chain, but it cannot replace a product-level safety check. Judge a cheaper device by the named maker and seller, current model-specific alerts, applicable documentation and markings, exact charging compatibility, and the support available if something goes wrong. The European Commission’s Vanessa Capurso said of JACOP: “Campaigns like JACOP protect European consumers from dangerous appliances and safeguard economic operators from competitors who try to circumvent EU rules.” The campaign’s findings underline the value of enforcement and verification—not a blanket judgment about products made in any one country.
